Univallate. Subcircular area on hilltop (max. dims. c. 101m N-S; 112m E-W) enclosed by traces of rubble rampart with stone facing. Stone-faced entrance gap at WSW (Wth 3.1m). (Carloviana 1986, 9) The hillfort was recently described in the Atlas of Hillforts of Britain and Ireland as following; 'Contour fort surrounding domed summit of hilltop which forms the NW spur of Blackstairs Mountains. The site overlooks a number of different small river systems at the base of the hill. Panoramic views from the summit. Sub-circular contour fort with a total site footprint of approximately 1ha surrounding the summit of hilltop in the NW of the Blackstairs Mountains and overlooking a number of different small river systems at the base of the hill. Univallate for the entire circuit with a simple stone lined entrance break to the S. No evidence for any internal features on the surface. Rampart survives well at the E. At the N section of the hillfort, the stones forming the bank have been used to form a field boundary which follows the course of the enclosing elements. The interior of the site is under dense scrub. First map depiction in second edition Ordnance Survey mapping. A field boundary runs E-W through the centre of the hillfort and forms the townland boundary between Killoughterane and Knockscur' (http://hillforts.arch.ox.ac.uk/records/IR0936.html). There is a standing stone (CW019-066002-) c. 140m to the SE, an enclosure (CW019-068----) c. 115m to the SSE and a ring-cairn (CW019-069----) c. 400m to the ESE. A granite standing stone (H 1.35m), roughly rectangular in plan (dims. max. L 0.7m; max. Wth 0.63m) which tapers towards the top (top dims. 0.3m x 0.25m). There is a stone (dims. 0.48m x 0.3m x 0.15m) at the base of the W side at the N end. There is a grassy hummock around the base of the stone which is in hollow caused by cattle trampling. There are a number of vertical fissures in the stone, particularly noticeable on the S face. On a flat break of a S-facing slope, in upland grazing with gorse and ferns. There are limited views upslope from W-N, the view E is dominated by Mount Leinster, there are very good views to the S and SW with the Blackstair Mountains visible in the distance. There is a standing stone (CW019-066001-) c. 140m to the NW, an enclosure (CW019-068----) 80m to the SW and a ring-cairn (CW019-069----) c. 280m to the ESE. A granite standing stone (H 0.85m), roughly rectangular in plan (dims. max. L 1.05m; max. Wth 0.36m) which tapers towards the top (Wth 0.15m). The S face has fractured and split away leaving a ledge roughly half way up the stone. There is hollow around the base of the stone as a result of cattle trampling. On a slight shoulder, immediately above a steep break in slope, in upland rough grazing. Tomduff Mountain dominates the view to the E and Mount Leinster to the SE, and there are very good to extensive views overlooking low lands S-SW. The view is limited from W-N by the rising slope. There is a standing stone (CW019-066001-) c. 115m to the NNW, another (CW019-066002-) c. 70m to the NE and a ring-cairn (CW019-069----) c. 320m to the E. A roughly triangular area (dims. 32.5m N-S; 29.2m E-W) with rounded corners, enclosed by a stone wall (int. H 0.85m; ext. H 0.17m; Wth at crest 1.3m; overall Wth 1.8m). The wall is very ruinous from E-S-W, but elsewhere is well-preserved and partially grass-covered. There is a stone-lined entrance (Wth 1.78m) in the NE quadrant. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 13 December 2016 - CW019-069: Cairn - ring-cairn, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCW019-069----. On a flat break of an E-facing slope, in upland, hilly terrain, under pasture. The views are very good N, Tomduff Hill dominates from NE-SE and Mount Leinster peeks behind this hill to the E. From S-W the view is extensive, however, it is impeded W by the rise in slope. There is a hawthorn tree growing in the SE quadrant. An oval partially grass-covered cairn (H c. 0.6m; dims. 11.7m N-S; 7.5m E-W) defined by kerbstones, some contiguous, particularly in the NE quadrant. In the northern half of the monument, particularly the NE quadrant there is evidence of internal kerbing, creating a kerbed bank (Wth 1.8m). In the NW the bank (Wth 2.6m) is grass covered and there is more slip. In the southern half the edge of the monument is defined by scarp and some kerbstones, the largest being a large quartz boulder in the SSW. The interior is lower than the enclosing bank and, while generally clear of cairn material, has some upright stones similar in size to the kerbstones. There is an area of disturbance in the W sector where the monument appears to have been dug into in the past. In the resulting hollow there is a large boulder, likely to have been dumped there as part of field clearance activity.
