Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 40m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank. Situated immediately ESE of St Patrick's College and just S of the summit of a drumlin hill. From W-N-E a modern drain has been dug at the external foot of bank. Original entrance not recognisable. Several modern paths traverse the internal area which has been planted largely with beech and pine. Davies (ITA Survey 1942) recorded a subcircular area (int. diam. 23.7m) bounded by a low earthen bank and a shallow fosse at W and NW and elsewhere by a steep scarp. He described a break in the bank and fosse at W which he speculated was probably the original entrance. Situated adjacent to a stream in wet infertile ground. Not visible at ground level. Detached three-bay two-storey red-brick gate lodge, built c.1880, with advanced gable-fronted end bay, slated lean-to timber canopy over door in centre bay, single-bay gable front facing road. Recent extension to rear. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, decorative oversailing bargeboards in truss form to each gable, red brick chimneystack with brick cornice, cast-iron rainwater goods. Red brick walls in Flemish bond with chamfered red-brick plinth. Moulded segmental-headed openings with chamfer-stop reveals, cut stone sills and historic four-over-four sash windows with ogee horns. Moulded brick string courses at impost level and first floor sill level. Replacement panelled timber door with plain glazed overlight. Located beside the main entrance of St. Patrick College inside ornate cast-iron railings forming gate screen. Railings on low plinth wall with square-profile cast-iron piers and responding end piers of cut stone. Gate piers surmounted by diagonally placed wrought-iron lamp standards and supporting round-arched wrought-iron overthrow with "ST PATRICKS COLLEGE" in metal letters over double-leaf cast-iron gates of same design as railings, now adapted to slide behind piers. - Saint Patrick's Catholic College, monastery, school, 1865–1875, National interest, registry number 40402023, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=CV®no=40402023. Detached Gothic Revival H-plan twenty-three-bay three-storey over basement former seminary college, built c.1870, having central gabled breakfront, square-plan four-storey towers at intersection of gable-fronted three-storey advanced end bays of flanking wings. Eight-bay east wing and ten-bay west wing enclosing rear courtyard with symmetrically placed corbelled gablets surmounted by chimneystack. Symmetrical rear elevation with central projecting bay. Four-bay church with full-height bowed apse attached to end of east block having five-bay lean-to aisle with gabled sacristy set at right angle on courtyard side. Seventeen-bay three-storey extension of c.1940 to rear of west block. Steeply pitched slate roof with eaves supported by moulded stone corbels, tall red brick chimneystacks with string courses and cornice details regularly spaced along ridge, circular- and square-profile cast-iron rainwater goods. Pyramidal slate roofs to towers with cornices and stepped parapets. Gables of central and terminating bay with cut stone fractables and surmounted by finials. Squared sandstone walls with chamfered limestone plinth and limestone courses above sills and beneath arches. Central gabled breakfront with clock to gable apex over stepped moulded course over triple slit openings and heraldic angel to kneelers. Two-storey red-brick arched recess having tripartite arrangement of pointed arch windows at second floor flanking statue niche, shielded quatrefoils to spandrel panels over triple square-headed first floor windows. Moulded cut sandstone surround to pointed arch main entrance door flanked by half side-lights, having pointed arch timber door with raised panels. Segmental-headed window openings to ground and first floor, shoulder-arched openings to second floor of main block. Pointed arch windows to second storey of terminating gables with hood mouldings to central windows and multifoils to apexes. Two-over-two timber sash windows with fixed overlights to segmental-headed windows. Dressed red-brick surrounds to segmental-headed second-storey opening and pointed arch third and fourth storey opening of towers, openings with sandstone tracery comprising of triple pointed arches with quatrefoil motifs to third storey and double round-headed arches with cinquefoil motif to fourth storey. Church with chamfered sandstone window surrounds with alternating cut limestone and sandstone voussoirs, pointed arch window opening to east elevation, trefoil-headed openings to apse and paired shoulder-arched openings to side aisle with multifoil openings to nave, multiple pane stained-glass to windows. Range of L-plan multiple-bay two-storey outbuildings, built c.1740, arranged around central courtyard, having gabled half-dormers with loft doors positioned off-centre to both ranges. Three-bay single-storey outbuilding to west of eastern block. Now disused. Slate roof having hipped end to south and gable end to east, rendered chimneystack to gable, sections of cast-iron rain water goods. Roughcast rendered walls. Squared-headed door openings and square-headed window openings beneath eaves to west side of north range. Wide elliptical-arched and square-headed machinery openings to east side of north range and east range. Sheeted timber doors, half-glazed panelled door to west bay, and fixed multiple pane windows. Later external metal steps to loft openings.
