Squared coursed sandstone walls, front gable snecked and random-coursed. Ashlar surrounds to window and door openings. Plaque in shield form below gable apex with inscription ‘IHS’. Inscribed plaque with Latin text to north side of main entrance. Large round relieving arch to third bays of nave walls as provision for unrealised transepts. Graduated triple lancets to main gable with twin-light central pening over continuous projecting sill with segmental relieving arch above. Lancet windows flanking main entrance beneath. Multiple-pane twin-light timber sash windows to side elevations with central timber mullion, stained glass windows to altar bay. Square-headed window opening to sacristy. Timber sheeted double doors to front entrance in triangular-arched opening with hood moulding, decorative corbels, block-and-start jambs, and stone steps. Narrow sharply-pointed door to rear gable. Single-leaf side doors to nave and to sacristy. Flat ceiling to interior with scooped recess for lancet windows in main gable, stucco cornice throughout. Painted dado and decorative band in altar area. Decorative pointed arch recess behind former altar with fluted pilasters and figurative wall painting. Timber panelled door to sacristy. Raked timber gallery to east end resting on stone wall corbels and decorative cast-iron columns. Timber and decorative-glass panelled lobby to entrance with double doors to nave and to timber gallery stairs. Timber arcaded balustrade with trefoil headed openings and decorative cast-iron infill rail, advanced bays above cast-iron columns. Stone stoup in wall corner to gallery stairs. Stone flags to nave floor. Semi-circle of stone paving below plaque beside entrance. Graveyard surrounding church. Freestanding Modernist gable-fronted church, built 1968, having seven-bay nave with side porches, three-bay chancel to rear, single-storey multiple-bay sacristy to west gable, glazed room connecting to bell-tower to north-west, recent boiler room adjoining. Shallow pitched concrete tile roof with projecting concrete eaves and barges, cast-iron rainwater goods, copper fascia to gable front. Rock-faced effect concrete block walls. Four-stage bell-tower to north-west with rendered string courses, surmounted by open columnar concrete belfry with shallow pitched concrete roof. Triangular-headed window openings with reconstituted stone sills and patent reveals, stained glass in metal frames. Central entrance bay flanked by rendered pilasters and divided into nine sub-bays with bevelled concrete mullions. Four upper stages having stained glass in alternating bays in chequerboard pattern with faceted spandrels. Pair of timber entrances doors with vertical boarding each occupying two sub-bays with stained glass to other sub-bays. Doors to side porches with stained glass cruciform light. Nave interior with stack-bonded concrete brick walling, flat plaster ceiling bands to sides, pitched centre raised and compartmented with acoustic panels and timber framing. Rendered central wall to chancel, three-bay stained glass windows to sides deep-set between full-height brick fins. Concrete-framed gallery front with to central five-bays horizontal brick panels on either side, timber screens and openings at ground level. Leaded stained glass windows to nave and entrance gable, twelve-panelled glazed timber entrance doors. Tiled floor to nave, carpet to aisles and in front of altar, raised carpeted altar. Timber altar furniture of 2001 with figurative inlays. Brass tabernacle, timber pews. Concrete paving and steps to entrance, with raised concrete planters. Detached three-bay single-storey and three-bay two-storey former railway station and station master’s house, built c.1885, having gabled bays and projecting gabled entrance porch to former house, and recent red brick porch to former platform side of station. Recent rendered lean-to extension to front elevation. Now divided into two dwellings. Pitched slate roofs, decorative clay ridge tiles, and decorative brickwork detailing to barges and eaves, recent metal rainwater goods, and rendered chimneystacks. Red brick walls with vitrified brick banding, bevelled brick plinth course. Two-over-two sash windows in segmental-headed openings with yellow and vitrified brick arches, yellow brick hoods, and stone cills. Round-headed window to north-west gable with brick archivolt and single-pane upper sash. Segmental-headed opening to entrance porch with timber sheeted door and overlight. Detached single-storey limestone plinth to former water tank located to south, formerly on other side of railway tracks, having later corrugated-iron roof, rock-faced limestone walls with dressed arrises, round-headed multiple-pane cast-iron window, and segmental-headed doorway, tank no longer in place. Single segmental arched window openings to gables having brick arch, roughly punched stone sills with drafted margins to and multiple-paned cast-iron windows.
