Motte comprises a roughly circular (diam. of base c. 30m; H c. 5m), very steep-sided mound, the W portion of which has been quarried away. The summit of the mound was originally flat-topped (diam. c. 12m). A fosse which runs between the motte and bailey at E is almost completely infilled. Bailey is approximately rectangular in plan (int. dims c. 35m N-S; c. 20m E-W) and is enclosed by a substantial earthen bank with external fosse which has been infilled at N. A low counterscarp bank skirts the outer lip of the fosse. Moybolgue Church is situated 100m to SE (CV034-046----). The motte and bailey is considered to be a national monument as defined in S.2 of the National Monuments Act 1930 on the basis of its archaeological, historical and architectural importance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revised upload: 21 April, 2017 - CV034-046001: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCV034-046001-. Located in a fold towards the top of a S-facing slope. This is an early monastic church, and it became the site of the medieval parish church of Moybologue in Kilmore diocese. However, noting is known of its history except that there was a hospital or hospice associated with it (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 354). The featureless N wall (L 11m; T 0.8m; H 3.2m) of the nave survives together with the S transept (ext. dims 7.2m N-S; 6.25m E-W; int. dims 6.75m N-S; 4.5m E-W) which is featureless apart from a cupboard at the S end of the E wall and a window embrasure (Wth 1.2m; H 1.6m) in the S wall. Features on the first floor could be inserted and the floor was supported by a corbel in the W wall, now removed, and a rebate on the S wall. It had a fireplace towards the N end of the E wall, and the rough corbels that supported the mantel are projecting out from the wall. There is a window in the S wall at the first floor with a re-used square hood moulding that is too large for the opening. The upper parts of the walls could be rebuilt and, with a fireplace, it did serve as a dwelling. The nave wall is extended E (L 7.4m) by a drystone wall, and N of the church there is an L-shaped structure (ext. dims 9.05m N-S; 8.9m E-W) defined by drystone walls (Wth c. 0.7m; H 0.5-1m) creating some mortuary enclosures. The church is within a circular graveyard (diam. c. 70m E-W; c. 68m N-S) defined by a drystone wall (at N: Wth 1m; H 1.4m), with a masonry wall (Wth 0.6m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.8m) at the roadside SE-SW. An illegible inscription on the W pier of the entrance gate has the date 181(?)3, which might indicate when the graveyard wall was constructed. Within the graveyard there are two cross-slabs, one with an early inscription, a font, three churchyard crosses and two fragments of crosses. The two graveslabs are both probably seventeenth century in date. There is also a fragment of an inscription which remains indecipherable, a holed stone that is part of a millwheel, and a stone with a single cup-mark. The curving wall of the graveyard at S with the road curving about the graveyard E-S-W, a field bank W-N enclosing the motte and bailey (CV034-045----) and a field bank NE-E could be interpreted as a large oval ecclesiastical enclosure (CV034-046008-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). Embedded in concrete beside the N wall of the nave of the church (CV034-046001-) are a cross-slab and three cross-heads, with three shafts constituting the remains of three former wayside crosses. Each of the cross-heads depict the crucifixion and two bear inscriptions, one dating to 1684, the other to 1686. A font lies nearby, while a holed stone (diam. of hole c. 0.18m) and a graveslab depicting a cleric in medieval garb, are situated E of remains of Church (King 1987, 303-5). The cross-slab carries an inscription. The word ‘Ór’ was read by M. A. Timony, but the remaining inscription was recorded by Brian Callaghan. A 3-D image by Gary Dempsey enable Prof. David Sirfer of NUI Maynooth to read the complete inscription was read as: ÓR Du Ulbran. The cross-slab is considered to be a national monument as defined in S.2 of the National Monuments Act 1930 on the basis of its archaeological, historical and architectural importance. The heads of two churchyard crosses with disc-heads and fragments probably belonging to one of them, a Latin churchyard cross with an inscription, and a stone with an inscription are set in cement just S of the N nave wall. This sandstone solid-ring cross (H 0.54m; span 0.39m; T 0.14m) with stubby arms has a pyramid on top. A crucifixion with a cherub above is depicted on one side, and IHS is carved on the ends of the arms. The reverse has a recessed cross in a circle with a cherub above. The letter A is inscribed over the cherub and below the cross are the letters: AUIL. Two fragments from cross shafts are likely to have been part of this cross. One piece (dims 0.25m x 0.14m; H 0.43m) has a carving of a bishop on one side and a man with raised arms on the other. A second stone (dims 0.26m x 0.15m; H 0.25m) has the upper part of a person on one side with the inscription: PAT / GARGA / N MAD / E THIS / CROSS / E ANNO / D 1686 on one side and the letters: N / M / GA on another. Situated just S of the N nave wall of Moybologue parish church and set into the ground so that its upper edge is just flush with the ground surface. This is a rectangular sandstone font (dims 0.56m x 0.56m) with chamfers (L 0.13m) at the angles making it an 8-sided font with uneven sides. It has a circular basin with a flat base (int. diam. 0.48m; D 0.2-0.24m) sloping down to the centre. The stone is actually cut from a mill-wheel that is slightly convex on the E side and concave from wear on the W side. Located just NE of the surviving parts of the parish church of Moybologue. This is a recumbent slab (dims 1.9m x 1.24; T 0.11m plus) which has fractured. It has a representation of a cleric holding a chalice. Davies (1948, 114) was able to read an inscription to the pastor of Moybologue and Kilmainhamwood who died in 1721, but the stone is likely to be older. The W pier of the entrance gate has an inscription on its E face which is indecipherable apart from the date 181(?)3, which probably commemorates the construction of the graveyard wall.
