Situated at the base of a very steep W-facing slope, at the W edge of a pasture field. There is very rough, wet pasture to W and drier pasture on the steep slope to E. It is depicted on the 1842 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a well feature and named ‘Holy Well’ on W side of the field boundary, but there is no longer any singular feature at this location. It is depicted and named on later OS historic mapping (1899 and 1920) on the E side of the field boundary. This is a waterlogged, oval depression (c. 6.5m N-S; c. 4.5m E-W) containing grass and watercress and is likely to represent the rising of a natural spring (current D c. 0.35m). It is defined to E by a large flat, moss-covered slab (L 2.75m; Wth 0.7m; T 0.25m) and other small boulders which appear recently placed. It is defined by a field boundary (long-axis NE-SW) to W. The outflow from the spring exits to S, where it appears to drain into a small watercourse c. 85m to SW. The following images have been uploaded: CL027-009----_01.jpg From ENE. On a S-facing slope, in pasture with reasonable views of a gently undulating landscape E-S-W and inhibited to S by slightly higher ground. The monument is largely obscured by dense briars and thorn trees. Depicted and named ‘Burial Ground for Children’ on the 1842 edition OS 6-inch map and ‘Children’s Burial Ground’ on later OS historic mapping. A long oval area (36m E-W; 19m N-S) defined by a low scarp (Wth 1.75m; H 0.55m) E-S-W which incorporates some large, moss-covered rocks. The monument has less definition on the upslope to N where there is a scarp although moss-covered rocks can be detected beneath the dense briar cover. The interior of the monument is largely inaccessible due to thorn trees and briars. A small area at the S edge is accessible where livestock have made a small path. This portion of the interior has a gentle S-facing slope and is raised (H 0.55m) above surrounding ground level. Numerous moss-covered rocks protrude above the surface and may indicate burials. The following images have been uploaded: CL027-010----_01.jpg From SSW. View of moss-covered stones within interior. CL027-010----_02.jpg From W. General view of monument.
