At the top of a rise with wide views, in hilly pastureland with overgrowth from SSE to N, and land immediately to the WSW sloping steeply into a ravine in which the Aille River flows N-S. Hachured and labelled 'Aughnavinna Fort' on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as 'Ringfort' in the RMP (1996). This suboval rath (int. dims. c. 25m NNW-SSE; c. 21.5m ENE-WSW) is defined in part by a round-topped earthen bank (Wth 2.2-3.3m; int. H 0.15-0.35m; ext. H 1-1.2m) and a flat-based external fosse (Wth 1.5m; D 1m). The bank survives only from NNW to SSW; it is traceable over the W arc of its circuit (i.e., at the ravine edge) only as a slight and intermittent ridge, overgrown and slightly damaged by recent topsoil removal. Three cattle gaps cut through the bank, at NNE (Wth 0.5m), NE (Wth 1.4m) and ESE (Wth 0.5m). Similarly the fosse is only traceable from NE to SSW; no fosse remains along the ravine from SSW to NNW, while from NNW to NE there is only a berm (Wth 1-2m) outside the bank, perhaps the result of the fosse having been levelled here. Adjacent to the ESE gap in the bank there is a poorly defined causeway in the fosse. A wire fence runs ESE-WNW through the S part of the fosse and beyond. The rath interior slopes gently to the S. In hilly pastureland with wide views to the N and S but overlooked by higher ground to the NE, E and SW. Conjoined with a rath (CL008-075002-) to the N. Hachured and labelled 'Moanbeg Fort' on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Named 'Móin Bheag' on Robinson's (1977) map. This circular area (av. diam. c. 45m) comprises a raised platform (24.5m N-S; 22m E-W; diam. at top 18m; H 1.2-1.75m) surrounded by a steep-sided, flat-based, reed- and rush-filled fosse (Wth at base 1.9m at N, 7m at SSE) and an earthen outer bank (Wth 1.9m at W, 9m at S; int. H 0.15m at SW, 1.95m at N; ext. H 1.25m at S) which is partly covered by thistles at the E. Three recent cattle gaps cut through the bank at SW-W. This bank conjoins with the inner bank of an abutting rath (CL008-075002-) to the N. A causeway (Wth at base 4.2m; Wth at top 2.2m) crosses the fosse at the S, its top at the same level as the bank and the interior. The centre of the rath is marginally higher than its edges. In hilly pastureland with wide views to the N and S but overlooked by higher ground to the NE, E and SW. Conjoined with a rath (CL008-075001-) to the S. Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). This subcircular rath (c. 56.5m N-S; c. 45m E-W) comprises a level interior space (36.5m E-W; 35.5m N-S) defined by a bank (Wth at base 5.3m, narrowing to 1.9m at top; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.75-1.55m) and an external fosse (max. Wth 4.2m at top, narrowing to max. 1.9m at base), to the N of which are remains of two further banks (middle bank: Wth 3.6m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H c. 0.15m; outer bank: Wth 1.9m; H 0.15m) with an intervening fosse (Wth 2m). There is a wide and poorly defined gap in the inner bank at the E-ESE, which may have been an entrance. At the S the inner bank conjoins with the outer bank of the abutting rath (CL008-075001-). Several modern cattle gaps run through the bank at WSW-NNW, and one at the NNE. The fosse outside this bank is traceable at NNW-SSE. At NW-NE it is steep-sided and flat-based, but its depth diminishes towards the SSE, while at SW-NNW it exists only as a berm. The middle and outer banks survive only at NNW-NE. It is possible that the outer bank was part of a later field boundary. An E-W running field bank crosses the S part of the interior, as well as the enclosing elements.
