Near the S shore of Lickeen Lough. The following details are from Crumlish (1996): this roughly circular crannog (c. 17.8m E-W; 16.2m N-S), constructed of rocks and flagstones, lies in c. 1.1-2+m of water, depending on the seasons. On inspection in August 1996, it rose 0.75m above the level of the lake. However, due to the removal of stones and flags from it over the years, mainly from the external wall-face, it does not stand to its original height. Traces of a plinth (Wth 0.1-0.2m) survived around it from NW to NE. The interior was covered in soil and vegetation. A small drystone structrure (CL016-069002-) occupied it. In the E sector, an area of disturbance (4m E-W; D 0.6m) related to an attempt to construct a landing area for boats. On the shoreline, c. 60m to the SSW, a possible causeway (CL016-069003-) jutting out into the lake probably accessed it. On a crannog (CL016-069001-) in Lickeen Lough. The following details are from Crumlish (1996): this small roughly square-shaped drystone structure (3.8m N-S; 3.1m E-W; H 0.8m; wall Wth 0.5-0.6m) is built of flagstones. It has been partly demolished and rebuilt, particularly the N wall, part of the W wall and upper courses of the E wall. Rubble from it is strewn about it to the W and NW. Associated with a crannog (CL016-069001-), c. 60m to the NNE, in Lickeen Lough and located at the nearest point on the shoreline from it. This possible causeway (L c. 4m; Wth c. 2.5m) is constructed of flagstones and rocks and is visible below the surface of the water for a short distance before it disappears (Crumlish 1996). It probably accessed the crannog. On the SE shore of Lickeen Lough, on a low-lying N-facing wooded slope in poorly drained marshy pasture. Ballagh Castle was in the possession of Teige McMurrough O’Brien in 1574 but by 1639 it had fallen into disrepair. Its site was pointed out by a local person (Ua Cróinín and Breen 1997). No visible surface trace of it survives and only intermittent traces of the walls of the rectangular building, named Ballagh House on the 1840 edition of the OS 6-inch map, are visible; they have been incorporated into field boundaries and stand out as more regularly built sections of walling. Ua Cróinín and Breen (ibid.) noted that a number of dressed limestone blocks visible in the vicinity and reused in the nearby farmhouse may have come from it. Near the S shore of Lickeen Lough, on a densely overgrown hillock where surrounding fields had been cleared and drained. The area has since been planted with extensive forestry plantations. Hachured and named ‘Caherballagh’ on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as cashel in the RMP (1996). This enclosure is named after the townland according to Westropp (1900, 430) and is included in his list of cahers (ibid., 1905, 361). He described it as a ‘featureless ring planted with hawthorns near Lough Ballagh’ (ibid., 1913, 260). On inspection in May 1999, the hillock (base diam. c. 60m) was so densely overgrown with scrub and gorse that it was difficult to traverse. Only a few earthen bumps were noted. On the S-facing slope of a hillock, within an extensive coniferous forestry plantation. Hachured on the 1916 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as cashel in the RMP (1996). This subcircular rath (int. dims. 26.5m E-W; 25m N-S) is defined by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The enclosing elements are visible from SW to N to SE but the inner (int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.8m) and outer (Wth 3.4m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 0.35m) banks are reduced to a scarp from SE to SW. Likewise, the flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 1m at base; Wth c. 4m at top) is reduced to a berm (Wth 6m) in this area. There is a causewayed entrance gap (Wth 3m) at ENE and a number of cattle gaps are also visible. The interior slopes to the S and is covered with a dense carpet of reeds. On a gentle N-facing slope overlooking Lickeen Lough in a reclaimed field of long grass to the W of a stream. This is one of two fulachtaí fia recorded by MacMahon (1991, 48) in this townland, see also CL016-151----. No visible surface trace of this one survives. A person who had moved into the area was unaware of a monument at this location but had heard of attempts to preserve a mound at the bottom of the field c. 220m to the NNE, where it was thought the burnt material left over was from a limekiln. That area is now forested and no trace of the mound was evident. This fulacht fia is defined by a circular mound (diam. at base 12.2m; H 0.4-0.7m) with a flat and slightly concave top (diam. 7m). Heat-shattered stone is visible. A drain, filled with hard core, lies to its SW. MacMahon (ibid.) also recorded a second fulacht fia (see CL016-150----) in this townland.
