Situated in undulating fertile land, once part of an estate. A D-shaped enclosure (13m N-S) with a straight S side (L 26.25m) defined by a drystone field wall similar to adjacent boundaries. There is no indication that the feature was originally circular. The interior contains outcropping limestone and is otherwise featureless. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 4 July 2016 - CL016-002001: Field boundary, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL016-002001-. Situated in cleared undulating pasture. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). A C-shaped (25m N-S) drystone wall (H 1.8m) open to the W and 11m N of a cashel (CL016-002002-). Three field boundaries radiate out from it at N, E and S. There is no evidence to suggest that it was originally circular or that it formed an enclosure. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 4 July 2016 - CL016-002002: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL016-002002-. In a largely overgrown field in an area of reclaimed pasture with good views to S and SW and within an extensive field system (CL009-059001-). Hachured on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and on the 1897 OS 25-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A moderately well-preserved subcircular cashel (int. dims. 23.5m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by a grassed-over and collapsed wall (H 1-2m; Wth 4.5m). Outer facing (H 1-1.05m) of large regularly sized limestone blocks survives at S and SW. With no inner facing apparent the original width is not measurable. There are no definite entrances; a gap in the S wall is of dubious antiquity and is likely due to tree roots. In the centre of the interior is an overgrown rectangular mound of stone and earth (L 5.25m; Wth 2.9m; H 0.2m). A second, similar mound is noted in the ENE sector along the perimeter of the cashel interior (L 6m). A souterrain (CL016-002003-) is located in the NW quadrant. A curving field boundary (CL016-002001-) is located c. 21m to the N. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Lynda McCormack Date of upload: 31 January 2022 - CL016-002003: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL016-002003-. In the NW quadrant of a cashel (CL016-002002-). A souterrain (L 8m), orientated E-W and visible as several exposed parallel lintels (L 1.7m). Two depressions with visible stonework to the N suggest that the souterrain was L-shaped or T-shaped in plan. These depressions have been used as badger setts and two further badger setts 6m to the NNE may also be associated.A curving field boundary (CL016-002001-) is located c. 21m to the N. Near the summit on the NW-facing slope of a hill, in marginal marshy pasture with good views in all directions. Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch map and the 1916 OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A subcircular rath (28.25m N-S; 24m E-W crest-crest) defined by a bank (H 1-1.75; Wth 2-8m) with a possible outer fosse (Wth 4-5m) visible as a reed-filled depression from SW to NW. Outer stone facing is visible at W. A laneway immediately to the NW slightly truncates the perimeter. There is no definite original entrance but there is a cattle gap at SW and the bank has been largely levelled at SE. The following image has been uploaded: CL016-003----_01.jpg View of outer stone facing at W. At the E end of a shale ridge with wide views across the Burren SW-E and higher ground to SE. Hachured and named ‘Doon Fort’ on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Cashel’ in the RMP (1996). Described by Westropp (1897, 126; 1900, 403; 1900-1902, 445) as ‘pear shaped’ with ‘a well-cut fosse’, ‘three entrances’ and with ‘a flight of rock-cut steps’. Also described by Westropp (1915, 256 and 264) as one in a ‘linear arrangement of forts’ and along with the forts extending W from Kilfenora, Doon fort is described as ‘featureless’ ‘the majority of earth, sometimes with the remains of stone facing’. A pear-shaped fort (L c. 118m; Wth c. 118m) defined by a partially overgrown earthen bank (Wth 9-14m; ext. H 3-3.5m; int. H 1.2-1.8m) from S to W and from WNW to NW with some stone facing and by a scarp (H 2.6-5m) elsewhere. An external fosse (also partially overgrown) is best preserved at W where it is flat-bottomed (Wth of base 4m; ext. D 1.3m). At S the fosse peters out and is round-bottomed (Wth of base 3m; ext. D 0.6m). At E, shale bedrock was cut in antiquity to form a horizontal ledge (Wth 1-2m; H 1m) which may extend to the N but is unconfirmed. Three entrances were recorded by Westropp (1897, 126; 1900-02), two in the W and one in the E. One of the W entrances had ‘a mound crossing the fosse’ which may have been a causeway (Westropp 1900, 445). The other W entrance (Wth 8m) had a sunken section (Wth 3.8m; D 0.2-0.4m) at the centre and may have had ‘a plank or drawbridge resting on a square-cut projection of shale rock’ (1900, 445). The scarp outside this entrance appears to have been particularly high. The third entrance at E was reached by a flight of seven steps recorded by Westropp (1897, 126). One step (H c. 0.6m) is currently exposed at the end of the fosse before it drops away to the natural slope to the E. This looks like a causeway and a modern entrance track crosses the bank at this point to access the interior. The interior (82m N-S; 99m E-W, crest-crest) is also partially overgrown and is mostly level but slopes towards the N and E edges where there is no bank. This may be a natural slope. A N-S field bank divides the site and the interior is particularly overgrown to the E of this bank. On a N-facing slope in marshy pasture with good views to the N and poor views elsewhere; within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). Indicated on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a small triangular field. A ‘tear-shaped’ enclosure (33m N-S; 27m E-W) the N half of which is very semicircular defined by a modern drystone wall (H 1.4m) with a modern gap at SE. The interior is partly overgrown. The very symmetrical nature of this enclosure may be due to landscaping in this area which was once part of an estate. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Lynda McCormack Date of upload: 31 January 2022 - CL016-006: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL016-006----. In improved pasture on a SSE-facing slope, with good views, especially to S and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). Hachured and named ‘Ballybreen Fort’ on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Similarly named on the 1897 OS 25-inch map and depicted as an incomplete circle open to the NNW. A somewhat overgrown circular enclosure (int. dims. 25.75m) defined by grassed-over wall collapse (Wth c. 1m) surmounted by a drystone wall (H 1.5m), probably of a later date. Two partly blocked-up alcoves (L 1m; Wth 1m) are visible in inner wall-face at E. The interior slopes gently to the S. A curving bank (Wth 7m; H 0.8m) visible on Digital Globe (2011-2013) extends from S to W at a distance of c. 33m from S and c. 14m from W. Two modern gates in the E and W walls give access to the interior which is currently serving as a cattle paddock. A concentric wall 4m outside the perimeter of the enclosure wall forms an avenue possibly now used for separating livestock. On a gentle rise in limestone outcrop in undulating pasture with good views in all directions and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). An irregular D-shaped enclosure (29m E-W; 24.7m N-S) defined by a randomly coursed drystone wall (Wth 4.4m; max. H 1.8m at SE) with a rubble core. The straight S side is defined by a field wall and there is no trace of the cashel wall beyond it to the S. Outer facing survives to six courses at E and W. The inner face is collapsed and the interior is overgrown. Another enclosure (CL016-009----) is located c. 98m to the ESE. Situated near the top of a low rise on a S-facing slope in pasture and outcrop. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Indicated and named ‘Sheepfold’ on the 1840 OS 6-inch map. A circular area (25.5m E-W; 26m N-S) defined by a drystone wall (H 1.45m; Wth 0.8m at base) from S through N to E. There is no evidence of a former wall continuing at SE. The wall has collapsed at NW where its two faces and rubble core are exposed. A gap at N has been filled in. The wall is similar to nearby field boundaries. The interior is 0.2m higher than the surrounding ground level.
