On a hillock on a valley floor with views extending c. 0.5-1km from W to N and extending 2km in other directions. Hachured on the 1840 OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). Described by Westropp (1905, 211) as ‘mere foundations’ ‘on the edge of Ballycasheen’. This is an oval cashel (ext. dims 31m E-W; 23m N-S) defined by a grass-covered, flat-topped stone spread which varies in width (Wth 4m in the N; Wth 6m in the E; Wth 6.3m in the S; Wth 8.8m in the W) and rises (H 0.2-0.4m) above the level interior (int. dims. 20m E-W; 14m N-S). The external height of the spread varies (H 0.6-0.8m) and is lowest in the N (H 0.4m). The stone spread is regular but with some intrusions into the cashel interior and there are some potential facing stones. A later cut into the E extent of the spread has exposed the stone. The site is surrounded by later drystone-walling on all sides except the N. The site was levelled before the construction of these walls and the stone spread extends out beneath the base of them. At the base of a S facing slope in an area of scrub and karst limestone. Hachured on the 1840 OS 6-inch map and partially hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch map. Westropp (1905, 211) refers to ‘The mere foundations of three other cahers—two of small dimensions—lie in the valley at Cahermacon, and on the edge of Ballycasheen’. On inspection in 1998 no archaeological feature was noted at this location but clearance in the fields to the E and SE had pushed spoil into this area. A roughly circular cashel (ext. dims. 26m NW-SE; 23m NE-SW) defined by a spread of stones (Wth c. 2m; H 0.5m) which may be a collapsed drystone wall with inner and outer wall-facings visible. The wall is best preserved at the NW, NE and SW (Wth 1.8m; H 0.3-1.4m). A gated gap in the NNE and gaps in the NE, ESE, S and SSW are later. The surviving remains are as described in de Valera and Ó Nualláin (1961, 52, Cl. 63) except that most of the monument is covered in scrub and only the interior of the chamber is visible. The attached image (CL016-048----_01) was taken in May 1952 and shows the monument to be largely clear of vegetation. The second image (CL016-048----_02) was taken in June 2013. The monument stands on south-facing gently-sloping ground near the southern end of Parknabinna ridge overlooking the valley of the River Fergus. The land comprises extensive areas of outcropping rock and the field in which the tomb stands was reclaimed between 2005 and 2010. The portal tomb (CL016-048----) in the same townland stands c. 250m to the NW. The monument is ruined and the surviving remains consist of a two-chambered gallery (L 2.6m) opening to the E. Entry to the E chamber (L 1.8m) is marked by a single, tall transversely-set jamb-stone (1.8m H). Immediately W of this a large roofstone (2.25m by 1.9m) covers the chamber and rests at an angle against the segmenting jamb-stone and N sidestone. This stone is set at an angle to the line of the gallery and overlaps the corresponding N sidestone of the second chamber to the W leaving a gap of only 0.4m between the jamb and sidestone. The W chamber (L. 1.4m; Wth 1.7m) is represented by a single surviving sidestone on the N and S and is closed by a backstone at the W. An expanse of outcropping rock rises immediately W of the backstone and this would have inhibited any extension of the gallery in this direction. The possibility that the gallery extended further to the E cannot be excluded but, given the tall jamb-stone at this end, does not seem likely. There is no evidence of any structural stones to the N of the jamb and the monument appears to have had various drystone walling insertions and accretions which hinder a full interpretation of the structure. The tomb appears to be set in a low stony mound but it is difficult to define any edge with certainty due to the fact that the field has been reclaimed and clearance piled up around it, especially at the W end of the extant remains where a large section of reclaimed rock has been set upright. The two-chamber design and transversely-set jambs have obvious affinities with many of those in the court tomb galleries. That said, the monument lacks any evidence of a court and the large roofstone is more usually associated with portal tombs: the monument clearly displays influences from both architectural traditions. Interpretation as a possible court tomb is suggested but this is purely tentative and a proper elucidation of the monument must await further investigation.
