On the inner edge of a shelf, on the NW-facing slopes of Slieve Elva, just below a cashel (CL004-016013-). A subcircular enclosure (ext. dims. 43.1m NE–SW; 38m NW–SE; int. dims. 41.4m NE–SW; 36.7m NW–SE) defined by a partially grassed-over drystone wall (H 0.4–0.8m). It surrounds a natural hollow markedly lower that the exterior ground. A rock-cut shelf (Wth 3m; H 1.6m) runs NE–S inside and merges with the line of the wall to the SW and NE. Grassed-over field walls extend from N and W and the enclosure lies within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-), covering an area of c. 8 sq km. There is a dense cluster of cashels in the vicinity. One cashel (CL004-016013-) is just c.16m to the E, a second (CL004-016014-) is c. 85m SE. Two further cashels (CL004-016012- and CL004-016011-) are 75m and 125m to the NNE. In a well-sheltered slightly hollowed area on the NW slopes of a Slieve Elva, with commanding views WSW–NE. A poorly preserved roughly oval enclosure (int. dims. 19m NNW–SSE; 14m WSW–ENE) defined by a bank of stone and earth (Wth 1.6–2.1m; H 0.65–0.8m) only clearly evident from NE–WSW and as a slight scarp at N. A later field wall obscures the enclosing element along the NW while from WSW–NW a feint low stony bank forms the limit. An entrance (Wth 0.8m) to the NE is probably original. The enclosure lies within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-), covering an area of c. 8sqkm. A cashel (CL004-016011-), also within that field system, is located c. 60m to the SSE. On a narrow shelf on the W-facing NW slopes of Slieve Elva, with commanding views WSW–NE. Indicated with a solid line on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Westropp (1901, 10) recorded it along with the other cashels in the vicinity. A roughly oval cashel (int. dims. 16.2m N–S; 20m E–W) defined by a very overgrown stone bank (T 1.8–3.8m) with inner facing (H 0.6–1m) visible NW–N and at S. The foundations of a roughly rectangular stone structure (CL004-01600) occur against the interior of the S wall. The interior is relatively flat, apart from a slightly raised area in the SE sector. This cashel lies within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-), covering an area of c. 8sq km. A cashel (CL004-016012-) and an enclosure (CL004-016010-), also within that field system, are located c. 30m to the SSE and c. 60m NNW. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 23 February 2021 - CL004-016012: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL004-016012-. On a slightly raised area of terrace on the W-facing slope on the NW side of Slieve Elva, with commanding views to WSW–NE. Hachured on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and indicated with a solid line on the 1915 ed. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Westropp (1901, 10) recorded it along with the other cashels in the vicinity. A roughly circular cashel (ext. diam. 29m) defined by a stone bank (Wth 3.1–3.6m; int. H 0.3–0.5m; ext. H 1.1–1.8m) with well-preserved external facing but a largely robbed-out inner face. The remains of a rectangular structure (CL004-016037-) are located in the N sector, abutting the NW wall. An exposed lintel in the NW sector covers an ope (2m NW–SE x 1.2m NE–SW; D 0.8m) potentially indicating a souterrain. Westropp (1901, 10) noted the, now likely obscured, jambs of a gateway (Wth 0.86m [34 inches]) in the north wall. He also noted ‘the foundations of a late oblong building’ which are likely the noted rectangular structure mentioned above and an ancient circular hut (CL004-016047-) in the SW, of which there are now no visible remains at ground level. An area of robbed cashel wall in the SSW might be related. This cashel lies within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-), covering an area of c. 8sqkm. Two cashels (CL004-016011- and CL004-016013-) and an enclosure (CL004-016008-), also within that field system, are located c. 30m NNW, 90m S and c. 85m SSW respectively. On a terrace on the W-facing slope on the NW side of Slieve Elva, with commanding views WSW–NE. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Hachured and named ‘Ballyelly Caher’ on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. Westropp (1901, 10) recorded it along with the other cashels in the vicinity. A circular cashel (ext. diam. 30m) defined by a stone bank/wall (Wth 3–4.5m; ext. H 0.35–2.25m; int. H 0.7–0.85m) with well-preserved outer face but a largely robbed and scattered internal face. Internally there are the remains of two rectangular structures of indeterminate date (CL004-016038- and CL004-016039-). This cashel lies within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-), covering an area of c. 8sqkm. An enclosure (CL004-016008-) and two cashels (CL004-016012- and CL004-016014-) also within that field system, are located c. 15m W, 85m N and 50m SE respectively. Situated at the NW base of a rocky terraced hill with good views to W and N. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Indicated on the 1915 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a subrectangular walled enclosure in an area with several circular enclosures to the N, E and S. On inspection in 1998 this was found to be an oblong drystone-walled enclosure (wall T 0.4-0.6m) with a second one at the NE end. Situated on flat ground on the W slopes of a ridge with commanding views SW to N. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). On inspection in 1998 this was found to be an oval area (diam. 57m NE-SW; 30m NW-SE) defined by a modern drystone wall (T 0.5m) except from ESE to S where the area is defined by natural outcropping rock. Some possible wall-facing is evident at NW and N. On level ground on the W-facing slopes of a ridge with commanding views from SW to N and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-). Indicated on the 1840 OS 6-inch map and depicted with an oval enclosure in the SW corner on the 1915 ed. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A roughly circular cashel (23m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by a poorly preserved wall which is level with the interior. The cashel wall is visible in the N (T 0.85-1m) and S (ext. H 0.5m) and the inner face of the wall (H 0.4m) at the E and S is occasionally visible. A later, oval enclosure abuts the interior perimeter of the cashel wall in the SW quadrant (L 11m N-S; Wth 7m E-W; T 0.7m; H 0.8m). On a W-facing slope with commanding views from WSW to N and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-). Indicated on the 1915 OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). An oval cashel (ext. dims. 29.5m E-W; 24.7m N-S; int. dims. 28.2m E-W; 23.3m N-S) defined by a partly collapsed wall (T 0.5m at E; T 0.8m at W) which has been demolished from NNE to ENE. The original outer wall-facing survives intermittently (max. H 1m at N and W). A wall (L c. 4m) which is partially obscured by rubble extends from W to NW inside the main cashel wall and may be contemporary. A gap (Wth 4m) at SW may be modern. A pile of rubble lies in the NNE interior and may be recent and a modern shed overlaps the cashel wall at SE. A roughly circular house foundation (CL004-016032-) abuts the interior of the cashel wall at E. On the high W-facing slopes of a hill with commanding views from SW to N and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-). Indicated on the 1840 and 1915 OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A well-preserved roughly circular cashel (ext. dims. 27.2m N-S; 24.7m E-W; int. dims. 20.5m N-S; 18.2m E-W) defined by a drystone wall (T 2.6m at W; T 3.9m at E; ext. H 0.3-1.75m) which is collapsed at SSE. The outer wall-face survives (H 2m in SSW) and is frequently concealed by collapsed masonry. The inner wall-face is best preserved from S to SW (H 1.2m) and less well preserved from SW to WNW. There is less internal collapse along the perimeter of the cashel from NE to ESE than elsewhere. There is a lintled gap in the cashel wall in the WNW (ext. Wth 0.6m; int. Wth 0.4m; H 0.4m; T 1.85m) and a continuation of this feature into the interior of the cashel is indicated by a shallow trench which may be part of a souterrain. In the E quadrant of the interior, the low wall foundations of a subrectangular house of indeterminate date (CL004-016033-) abut the perimeter of the cashel wall. A low, later wall sits on top of this feature. An irregular spread of stones in the SSW may indicate a collapsed second structure. Outside of the cashel and along the perimeter in the SSE, a structure which is now used as an animal pen may have been a contemporary house site. Stone walls abut the cashel wall at W, N and E. A holy well with an opening (c. 2m x 0.8m) to the SW. An underground stream (D 1.4-1.8m) flows through the well from E to W. Much of the roof, walls and floor of the well are natural but it may have been built up at the S. It is accessed by steps at SW and was still in use on field inspection in 1998.
