On a hilltop in rough, wet pasture. Hachured on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This mostly overgrown but well-preserved circular bivallate rath (int. diams. 43.5m N-S; 44m E-W; ext. dims. 79m E-W; 74m N-S) is defined by a substantial inner bank, a smaller outer bank and an intervening fosse. The steep-sided, round-topped inner bank (Wth 7-12m; int. H 1.15-2m; ext. H 2-3.1m) of earth and some stone has a possible entrance gap (Wth 4.5m at base; 12m at top) at ENE. There are modern livestock gaps at N, S and W. The wet fosse has a consistently flat base (Wth c. 3m at base), while its upper width (4-7m) varies with the profile of the banks inside and outside. The outer bank (Wth c. 2.5m; av. int. H 1.25m; av. ext. H 1m) has been levelled at NE. The damp interior is slightly higher in the centre than the perimeter and shows signs of former cultivation. Later field boundaries radiate off the monument at N, E, S and W. On a S-facing pasture slope, overlooked by higher ground to the N. Identified in 1998 by Markus Casey. This subcircular rath (27m E-W; 25.5m N-S) is defined by a low scarp (H 0.15-0.3m), and a marshy outer fosse (Wth 2.25-4.5m; D 0.15m below external ground surface) from NE-S-W. Traces of a second, outer bank (Wth 2-4m; H 0.1m) survive from S-W. The raised interior is slightly dished. Some 15m to the E, the N-S running townland boundary wall between Ballyheean and Ballyvorda (to the E) angles sharply E to avoid crossing the monument. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 6-10-2025 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Ballyheean. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Ballyheean, about 1 in 10 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
