In improved and recently de-scrubbed pasture, overlooking a short sharp slope to SSW. The monument is depicted and named on all OS historic mapping as ‘Bunavory Castle (in ruins)’. Salter (2004, 56) and Ua Cróinín and Breen (1997) indicate that it was the seat of the MacClancy’s who were brehons to the O’Briens of Thomond. It was held by Donough MacClancy in 1574 and by Sir Roland Delahoyde in 1641 who was married to a daughter of MacClancy of Inch Castle (Ua Cróinín and Breen (1997, 1-2). Bunavory was forfeited in the Cromwellian settlement and granted to Philip Bigoe (ibid., 2). The monument consists of a small rectangular structure (9.5m WNW-ESE; 7m NNE-SSW) defined by the poorly preserved remains of low, rubble limestone walls which are sod covered for the most part. The lower portions are degraded by cattle in places resulting in some loose tumble along the base of the walls. Very few facing-stones survive and the rubble core is exposed for the most part. The WNW wall (L 7m; min. H 1.2m (in centre); max. H 1.8m (at SSW end); T 0.7m) is the best preserved of all the four walls, having a squared facing-stone in the centre and other smaller squared facing-stones immediately adjacent. Most of the facing-stones are missing from the NNE wall (L 9.5m; min. H 0.75m; max. H 1.8m; T 1.0m), except at the base, where there are some long, squared blocks having mortar and possibly fragments of render on the exterior. It is degraded by cattle along the base. The ESE wall (L 7m; min. H 0.4m at SSW end; max. H 1.1m at NNE end) is covered in loose embanked material which is pushed up against it. The thickness of this wall is unclear due to collapse of rubble inwards. The NE basal quoinstone is missing and fresh soil is exposed. The remains of a base-batter are evident at the foot of this wall, at the NNE end. The SSW wall (L 9.5m; min. H 0.85m; max. H 1.8m; T 0.9m) is best preserved at the WNW end. A small gap (Wth c. 0.8m) at the NW end of the NNE wall allows access into the interior, which appears to be a single room. The interior floor level is much higher and more uneven than the external ground level suggesting that it has a backfill of earth-covered rubble. The interior is almost choked with vegetation consisting of numerous young thorns, a mature thorn and an ash tree. According to local information, stone from the castle was removed to build local roads and potentially Bunavory House and outbuildings c. 270m to NE. Within a modern, level farmyard, abutting a vernacular farmyard to N. Depicted on the 1840 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular hachured area (c. 30m N-S; c. 32m E-W) defined by a single bank. Not visible at ground level. The ground has been built up across this location to make a level farmyard surface. Modern sheds and structures are built at this location upon the ‘made ground’ where the ground level has been raised along the SE and NE sides of the farmyard to compensate for hillslope. As the whole area beneath the modern farmyard is artificially raised, it is likely that the levelled monument still exists below this, albeit heavily compacted. Compiled by: Mary Tunney, Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly Date of upload: 4 July 2018 - CL035-021: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL035-021----. In generally level, improved pasture, with rock outcrop close to the surface. Listed as ‘Rectangular enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Depicted as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 58m) on the 1840 edition of the OS 6-inch map and depicted as an oval enclosure (c. 55m NW-SE; c. 37m NE-SW) on the 25-inch and 1921 editions where it is truncated by a townland boundary across the SE sector. During archaeological assessment nearby Rooney (2007, 19-20) noted that ‘The site today is represented by a low bank located in the corner of the field. The bank may represent the W side of the monument marked on the 3rd edition map however no other trace of the monument survives’. Rooney (ibid.) continues, ‘The grassed over bank measures c. 34m in length, 4.7m in width and c. 0.76m high….and appears to curve to the NNW. The field in which the monument is located appears to have been reclaimed and it is most likely that the enclosure was almost completely levelled in the process.’ On inspection in 2017 the monument was not visible at ground level. The enclosure site is bisected by a field boundary (long-axis NW-SE). A townland boundary (long-axis ENE-WSW) truncates the SE sector of the area as per historic mapping. No trace of the monument is evident on either side of it. Compiled by: Mary Tunney, Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly Date of upload: 13 November 2017 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Bunavory. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Bunavory, about 1 in 5 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
