On a slight rise, within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-001001-), on an undulating upland karst plateau in rough pasture, with views of Slieve Elva to the NW and an ENE–WSW ridge c. 325m to the S. Hachured on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and named ‘Cahermaan’ on the 1920 ed. and the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map. Noting this cashel’s relatively small size, Westropp (1915, 54) and Robinson (1977) disagreed with the Ordnance Survey’s assignation of it as Cahermaan cashel (or ‘Cathair medhoin’ [Westropp]; ‘Cathair Meáin’ [Robinson]), ‘first named in 1390’ (Westropp 1915, 54). Both reasonably associate the name with a larger levelled enclosure (CL009-001008-) c. 350m to the NE. A suboval enclosure (22.9m N–S; 21m E–W) defined by a double-faced drystone wall (Wth c. 1.3–1.6m; H c. 1m) of uncoursed medium-sized stones (L 0.3–0.6m; H 0.3–0.4m). The inner facing is mostly concealed by a grass-covered deposit of stones (Wth c. 1.5–2m; H. 0.8–1.1m), except where the cashel wall is broken through by a modern entrance (Wth 1.3m) on the SSW side. The original cashel entrance is not discernible and there are no visible remains in the level, grass-covered interior, which appears to have been cleared. Westropp (1915, 54) described it as being under cultivation. A drystone wall (Wth c. 0.6m; max. H 0.6m) is built over the outer facing of the cashel wall. A rectilinear structure (c. 20m NNE–SSW; c. 2.5m WNW–ENE) with an entrance at its SSW end abuts the SE exterior of the cashel. This is marked as a sheep fold on the 1897 ed. of the OS 25-inch map, and is also drawn on the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 12 October 2021 - CL009-001008: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL009-001008-. On a level karst plateau in rough pasture, within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-001001-), with higher ground c. 300m N and c. 325m S. To the S and SE there is a shallow gully running ENE–WSW. Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. OS 6-inch maps. Westropp (1915, 54) and Robinson (1977) identify this as ‘Cahermaan’ (‘Cathair medhoin’ [Westropp]; ‘Cathair Meáin’ [Robinson]), ‘first named in 1390’ (Westropp 1915, 54). A poorly preserved subcircular cashel (42.1m E–W; 41.4m N–S) defined by a stone wall (est. Wth 2m; ext. H 1–1.2m; int. H 0.4–0.7m), the outer face of which can be traced almost all the way around, behind some outward tumble. The W–NW arc of the wall survives best; it has fallen out at the NW–N, and is in poor condition at the S. The top of the wall is overgrown with grass and is flush with or lower than the cashel interior. There is a gap at the SSW (est. Wth c. 8.5m) but this appears to be modern; no original entrance can be discerned. Just N of the cashel’s centre, at the highest point of the interior, there is a hut site (CL009-001041-). The interior of the cashel appears to have been quarried, leaving a long, shallow U-shaped depression (20m NE–SW; 10m NW–SE; D max. 0.9m). This may have destroyed the SSW section of the cashel wall. A drystone wall (L c. 18.5m) is built over the SSW–W arc of the cashel wall. A rectangular structure (L c. 7m; Wth c. 4m) is built against the ENE exterior of the cashel. A drystone wall extends ENE–WSW through the cashel, over the possible quarrying marks. This wall was not yet built in 1839 when the area was surveyed for the 1842 ed. OS 6-inch map, but was in place in 1895 (survey for the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map) following a substantial reorganisation of rundale field systems in the N of Cahermaan. A smaller enclosure (CL009-001007-) is located c. 350m to the SW. It is named ‘Cahermaan’ on the 1920 ed. OS 6-inch map and 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map; however, Westropp (1915, 54) is probably correct in assigning the label to cashel CL009-001008-. The Ordnance Survey Letters (1839) describe ‘Caher-Maan (Cathair Meadhoin), i.e. the Middle Caher’, as a ‘large fort’ (Comber 1997). Westropp (1915, 54) suggests the name originated from the cashel’s location approximately half-way between Cahermakerrila (CL009-001005-) and Cahermacnaghten (CL009-001010-) cashels, which lie 945m to the SW and 1.38km to the ENE respectively. On limestone pavement with some grass cover, within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-001001-). The land rises immediately to the N and c. 80m to the S. Listed as ‘Enclosure (possible)’ in the RMP (1996). A rectangular cashel (ext. dims. 40.9m E–W; 34.7m N–S) defined by low grassed-over stone walls (H 0.4–0.7m; Wth c. 1.5m). A later, roughly NNE-SSW running, drystone wall (H 1.3m) is built immediately outside the line of the E wall and another ENE-WSW running field wall is just outside the N wall. Outer wall-facing is visible intermittently along the S, W and N walls. Grassed-over spreads of stone (Wth 4-5m) are visible around the walls. An entrance-like feature (Wth 1.15m) is visible about mid-way along the E wall. It is defined by two upright stones (N stone: H 1.14m; Wth 0.45m; T 0.18m; S stone: H 1.06m; Wth 0.4m; T 0.15m) which are visible immediately inside the NNE-SSW running drystone wall. About 3m to the W of these, two further stones, flush with the ground level of the interior of the cashel, mark what appears to be a raised pathway (H 0.3m; basal Wth c. 2m; upper Wth c. 1m) that leads towards a centrally located rectangular house (CL009-009002-). Another structure (CL009-009003-) is visible against the W wall and there is a small cell-like structure (int. dims. 5m E–W; 4.6m N–S) in the SW angle. Roughly centrally located within the interior of a rectangular cashel (CL009-009----). This rectangular house site (int. dims. 9.5m N–S; 7.4m E–W), of indeterminate date, is defined by grass-covered wall footings (Wth 0.8–2.2m; H 0.1–0.4m). The doorway was most likely in the E wall wall as a raised grass-over pathway extends from it to towards the possible stone-lined entrance in the E wall of the cashel.
