On a ridge of high ground in an E-W valley in reclaimed pastureland. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch map and named ‘Cahermacon’ on the latter ed. Recorded by O’Donovan, in 1839, as a caher in the townland of ‘Cahermochunna’ ‘said to have been the residence of ‘O’Hehir’ (Comber 1997, 16). Listed as ‘Cahermachuna’ by Westropp (1900, 431) and described by him as ‘mere foundations’ and of ‘small dimensions’ (ibid., 1905, 211). Listed as Cashel in the RMP (1996). A subrectangular rath (int. dims. 24.4m E-W, c. 18m N-S) defined by a slightly curving low flat-topped bank from SE to W to N. Spoil has been piled on top of the bank from SW to N. It is best preserved at S (Wth 6.5m, int. H. 0.3m, ext. H. 1.2m) where occasional facing-stones are visible. A double-faced drystone townland boundary wall overlies the enclosing element from N to SE. A number of clearance cairns are visible in the interior. There is a cashel (CL016-034----) c. 130m to the WNW. Located on the N half of a natural rectangular platform (66m N-S; 30m E-W) that slopes to the S. Indicated on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a roofed rectangular building; by the time of the 1916 ed., it was ruined and unroofed. The N wall (Wth 0.7-0.8m; H 0.4m; max. H 1.2m at NW) is the best preserved section of the building (int. dims. 9m N-S; 5.9m E-W). Only the inner face of the E and W walls is visible. The walls are constructed of crudely dressed and mortared stone that are probably of late-medieval date; no architectural features are evident (Breen and Ua Cróinín (2000, 5). A similar, but smaller, building (CL016-144002-) lies immediately to the N. The platform may have may have been adapted as a bawn (CL016-144003-) (ibid.). Located on the N half of a natural rectangular platform (66m N-S; 30m E-W) that slopes to the S, and immediately to the N of another similar, but larger, building (CL016-144001-). Not indicated on the 1840 or 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Only the grass-covered NE corner of this building (int. dims. 6.75m N-S; 3m E-W) survives. It is constructed of crudely dressed and mortared stone that is probably of late-medieval date; no architectural features are evident (Breen and Ua Cróinín (2000, 5). The platform may have may have been adapted as a bawn (CL016-144003-) (ibid.). Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 25 August 2022 - CL016-144003: Bawn, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL016-144003-. In pastureland. Breen and Ua Cróinín (2000, 5) suggest that a bawn wall was built on this natural rectangular platform (66m N-S; 30m E-W) sloping to the S. Two possible late-medieval buildings (CL016-144001- and CL016-144002-) are located on its N half. The N side of the platform is defined by a scarp (H 1.5m) and a quarry face is visible at its base. A grassed-over stone wall runs along the top of the E edge of this side; it could be related to the building shown in this area on the 1940 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. The E side (H 2.2m) is steeper. A wall visible about midway along scarp face may have been built to retain the platform. The S side is indistinct but a briar-covered cairn and possible house foundations are visible in the SE corner; the latter may be the remains of another building shown on the 1840 ed. Breen and Ua Cróinín (ibid.) note that the linear wall/bank on the W side, which extends around to the W end of the N side, suggests that the platform was once protected by a wall. They also suggest that Ballycasheen Castle (see CL016-194----) may have been located within this site, which is known locally as ‘Lochlann Riabhach Ó hEithir’s House'. On a low hillock on the floor of an E-W valley in pasture. A roughly triangular-shaped grass-covered mound of earth with some stone visible. The mound is flat topped (dims. at top L 4.6m at W; L 5.7m at NE; L 5.8m SE; dims. at base L 9.8m at W; L 11.4 at NE; L 9.6 at SE) and varies in height (H 1.2-1.5m). Its edges are eroded and this may be due to the presence of livestock in the field. According to local information, it was always here and was known as ‘the moat’.
