On the summit of a steep and prominent hill in an area of hilly, uncleared coarse pasture and with a conifer plantation to the E. The field boundaries in the area have been levelled, the land to the N shows signs of earlier cultivation and the views are panoramic. Hachured and named ‘Cahersherkin’ on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Listed as Ringfort - cashel in the RMP (1996). Referred to by Westropp (1900, 430; 1905 361; 1913, 260) as ‘Cathair Seircin’ and described (1913, 260) as ‘only a small defaced ring-fort’. A roughly circular rath (42m N-S; 41m E-W) defined by a steep-sided and rounded inner bank, a steep-sided and flat bottomed, marshy fosse (Wth 1.8m at base; max. Wth 2.5m in NW) and an outer bank which is wide at the base and narrows towards the top (Wth 1.4-3.1m at top; ext. H 0.3-0.6m; int. H 0.5-0.9m). Several cattle gaps are visible in the inner bank in the N, S and SW and a gap in the E (Wth 3.15m) along with a faint causeway across the fosse (H 0.1-0.2m) in the E is an original entrance gap. A single boulder lies near the causeway in the E. The outer bank is similar in form to the nearby earthen field boundaries and it may have been used and rebuilt as an earthen field boundary. Several cattle gaps cut through the outer bank which has been reduced to a low spread of earth (H c. 0.1m) from NE to E. The interior (19m N-S; 19m E-W) slopes to the E and is overgrown with rushes and reeds. In a shallow basin on a gentle S-facing slope in rough pasture. Recorded by MacMahon (1991, 48). A flat-topped oval or D-shaped grass-covered stone spread (dims. at base 13.6m N-S; 10.3m E-W; dims. at top 10.1m N-S; 7.2m E-W) sloping gently to the SW. On a S-facing slope in a haggard located to the S of a laneway, which leads to a farmhouse further to the S. According to local information, this holy well is dedicated to St Behan and it provides a cure for skin disorders. Two penitential stations (CL016-158002-) and (CL016-158003-) are associated. The well (dims. 1.2m x. 0.8m) is horseshoe shaped, open to the S, and is delimited by a drystone wall (H 0.4m). There is a wall recess on its W side. One step (Wth 0.55m) leads down to the brackish water. A canopy feature over the enclosing wall consists of a glass-fronted cement block-built press (Wth 0.9m, D 0.73m; H 0.6m) with a stone roof; it contains statutes of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart, as well as Lourdes holy water bottles. Beneath it, a recessed shelf holds mostly empty ink bottles. The well occupies the SW angle of a triangular cairn (c. 3.6m N-S; c. 3m E-W) or penitential station (CL016-158002-) that decreases in height from S (H 0.6m) to N where it is flush with the ground surface. A path outside the cairn, from the SW angle to the N apex, leads to the Saint’s seat which consists of four blocks cemented on top of each other and capped with a stone that is naturally scalloped and shaped, and looks similar to a tractor seat in appearance. The well and cairn are located within a stone-walled enclosure (c. 15m N-S; c. 5-6m E-W). A dried-up stream bed visible to the E of them exited the enclosure at SE. The 2nd penitential station (CL016-158003-) consists of a stone (dims. 0.8m x 0.5m; H 0.8m), D-shaped in section, leaning to the N. Damage on its S face appears to be the result of a crowbar. There is a small plantation of lime trees c. 10m to its S. In the past an attempt was made to extend this northwards, towards the round, and a number of saplings were planted but the following morning they were all found to have been pulled out of the ground, a sign that the saint was protecting the route of the round. When people did the round of the well, they approached it from the W, along the laneway, before tuning S and passing the stone, and then turning W again to cross a stile, S of the spring well, and proceeding to the well. Near the bottom of a SE-facing slope in a landscape that generally slopes to the S. The site is overgrown with long grass for silage with some scrub at the perimeter in the S. A subcircular ringfort (dims. 26.7m E-W; 23.7m N-S, crest to crest) defined by a bank which is best preserved from N to NNE where it is flat-topped (Wth 0.6m at top; Wth 2m at base; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.8m). From NNE-SSE the bank is reduced to a scarp (H 1m) and from ESE-SSE the slope of the bank has been further reduced for use by vehicles. From SSE-S, the scarp is sharp and well defined (H 0.5m). From SW to N a stone-faced wall has been incorporated into the ringfort bank (Wth 3.3m) and there is an external drain. A gap at NE (Wth 2m) may be original and a gap at NNE (Wth 3m) may be modern. A shed and a disused quarry are located to the N. Situated on a S-facing slope in a lowlying area with higher ground to the N and E. A slightly raised rectangular area (9.3m NW-SE; 10.4m NE-SW at base: 8m NW-SE, 7.6m NE-SW at top: H 0.1-0.3m except at S where it is 0.8m). There is a slight mound (Wth 1.6m; H 0.1m) at NE and a raised rectangular platform (3m x 2.2m; H 0.2-0.3m) at the W corner. A townland is the smallest land division of Ireland, and the unit of a rural address; old registers such as the 1901 and 1911 censuses file it under its civil parish and barony.
