Toward the bottom of a W-facing wooded slope at the E end of a small NE-SW running valley. Marked and named ‘Toberinneenboy’ on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. Named ‘Tobar Iníne Baoith’ on Robinson’s map of the Burren (1977). This small well-preserved holy well is a rectangular drystone wall structure (int. dims. 0.6m NE-SW; 0.47m NW-SE; ext. dims. 1.65m NE-SW; 1.4m NW-SE). The stones are quite large and regular, but not dressed and the wall is flush with the surrounding ground surface on the NE and SE sides (upslope) but rises (max. H 0.4m) on the SW side where the wall is capped with cement. The wall is wider at NE (0.6m; av. Wth 0.4-0.5m) where a cross (CL017-027002-) is set loosely upright. A line of seven quartz pebbles has been laid out in front of the cross, the largest at the centre and the smallest at either end. The well is 0.9m deep to the water surface, and 1m in full depth. It lies within a D-shaped enclosure (7.2m NE-SW) with a straight SW side (L 7.2m), defined by a drystone wall (H 0.8-1m). On all sides except the SW this wall is surrounded by another wall at distance of between 1.4m and 6m. There are two rough entrance stiles in the walls at NE. Situated on the NE side of ‘Toberinneenboy’ holy well (CL017-027001-), where it is set loosely on top of the enclosing wall. This heavily patinated cross (H 0.59m; Wth 0.3m; T 0.095m), probably of limestone, has a wide base (Wth 0.22m) which narrows toward the arms (max. Wth 0.12m), with the arms, likewise, narrowing inwards towards the shaft. Similarly, the cross head (max. Wth 0.14m) narrows down to the arms. There is rough punch-dressing on the narrow sides of the cross. Both the arms and the head bear curved indentations, with a central raised ridge (Wth 0.035m) at the top of the head. The SW face of the cross (i.e. facing the well) has a narrow horizontal incised line across the shaft under the arms. There are two small hollows on this face—one on the head and another near the base—which are probably natural imperfections or solution holes. Across the arms, is a crude irregularly spaced and unclear incised inscription, not running horizontally but rather sloping down to the lower extremity of the right arm. This inscription includes the letters ‘HC’, then a gap, then ‘IH’ which presumably is followed by an ‘S’. On the left there is a date, possible 1715 or 1702 (pers. comm. Tim Robinson). The NE face of the cross bears a simple incised cross, while this face of the NW arm has been chipped. This was originally a finial cross, perhaps taken from the nearby medieval church (CL017-020001-) of Killinaboy, although it gives the general appearance of having been a penal cross. On a S-facing karst slope in dense hazel scrub. Hachured on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This small, heavily overgrown, rectangular structure (int. dims. 23.5m N-S; 12.7m E-W; ext. dims. 27.2m N-S; 19.5m E-W) is defined quite differently on each side: Along the E and W, the enclosing element comprises a thin band of loose stone at the top of an inward-facing scarp (Wth 0.7m at E; H 1m at E; H 1.5m at W). On the stone tumble along the W is a rough line (Wth 0.9m; H 0.6m) of boulders while on the E perimeter is a drystone wall (Wth 0.6m; H 0.8m) which acts as the boundary separating the townlands of Ballyportry North and Commons South. The N limits are defined by a stony bank (Wth 3.8-4m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.4m) overlain by a drystone wall (Wth 0.5m). The S limits are defined by a double-faced stone wall (Wth 1m; H 1m). At the S edge of a level valley floor, with ground rising to the S. Named ‘Toberboydan’ on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. Named ‘Tobar Bhaighdeáin’ on Robinson’s map of the Burren (1977). This holy well comprises a shallow (D 1m) drystone-lined depression (L c. 1.5m; Wth c. 1.5m) in the ground, with a stream running off to the N, located in a boggy area (diam. c. 15m) into which water flows from dense overgrowth and out of which into a field-drain. The OS Letters (1839) recorded an active tradition of visiting this holy well and another nearby ‘for the cure of sore eyes, and for delicate children’ (Comber 1997, 13). Baighdeán is an obscure local saint who is also associated with the nearby monastic site of Kilvoydan (CL017-119001-) c. 3.2km to the SE (Kirby 2021). Situated on open karst c. 3m NW of a large glacial erratic. Listed in the RMP (1996) as ‘Grave-slab’. This is a headstone (L 1.94m; Wth 0.63-0.63m; T 0.1-0.15m) that was being manufactured at this location and was probably intended for use elsewhere. The upper surface is perfectly smooth but there is no inscription. The sides are roughly finished and the back is uneven and natural with solution holes. One end is nicely rounded and the corners at the other end are broken. In 1986 it was thought that there was some indecipherable lettering on the stone (Coffey 1986, 58). Similar locations where graveslabs or headstones were quarried in the 18th century are known further north (see for example CL010-213---- and CL010-237----).
