In overgrowth near a field boundary which forms one side of a farm track. Indicated and labelled ‘Carving on Rock’ on the Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Potential site - map’ in the RMP (1996). This rock scribing is on a partly exposed, almost flat, sandstone slab (exposed L 2.2m E-W; 1.4-1.8m N-S) which appears to have an elongated suboval shape. The slab slopes slightly to the N, and has a smooth, even surface. Moss and grass cover all of the edges, and there are encroaching brambles along its W side. The main scribing (42cm NNE-SSW; 18cm WNW-ESE) was recorded by Westropp (1902-1904, 119) as comprising ‘a curiously combined ornament, formed of spirals, loops, and curved ends’. Near it are at least two carved circles and two crosses (max. dims. 4-7cm), as well as clusters of incised lines (mostly oriented N-S) and small subcircular and geometrical shapes—both incised and in shallow relief, but very faint. During an inspection in 1999, the landowner reported that a rubbing of the stone was taken by a visitor to the site, but she did not know what became of this. She also believed that there are more circles and crosses on the slab, but these were not detected at that time. There are two main local folkloric interpretations of this rock scribing: that it covered a burial of twins, and that it was used as a mass rock. In NE-sloping rough pasture overlooking boggy terrain to the N and NE. This megalithic structure (L 3.1m N-S; Wth 1.5-1.7m E-W) consists of two roughly parallel (0.5m apart), N-S running earthfast stone rows (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.4m), each row comprising three moss-covered stones. A stone at NW, set on edge, is the largest (L 1.5m; Wth 0.6m; H 0.4m). The N end of the structure is open but there may be a small end stone at the opposite, S end. The structure is situated to W of centre in a poorly preserved circular enclosure (int. diam. 8.5m N-S; 7.4m E-W; ext. diam. 9.9m N-S; 9.7m E-W) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 0.5-1.2m; int. H 0.1-0.15m; ext. H 0.1-0.3m) retained by occasional kerbstones (L 0.4-0.6m; Wth 0.2-0.4m), especially at the SW. This bank is best preserved at S-W-NW but is disturbed elsewhere and has trees growing upon it. There are several gaps in the bank, one of which at the N (Wth 1m) may be an entrance since it is located in front of the megalithic structure’s open N end. In rocky bogland on the E edge of a gravel quarry on the W edge of a ridge in mountain terrain with extensive views from W to N. Listed in the RMP (1996) as ‘Megalithic structure’. A sandstone conglomerate orientated SW-NE (H 1.45m rising to 1.8m at SW; Wth 0.85m; T 0.6-0.75m at base, tapering toward the top (0.15m)) situated dangerously close (0.4m) to a quarry edge and in close proximity and at right angles to a glacial erratic (2m to S). The two stones form a striking view against the skyline from the NW. Several other glacial erratics occur in the area. The adjacent erratic (L 2.8m; Wth 1.8m; H 1.8m) is also a sandstone conglomerate and is one of the largest boulders on the ridge. Although natural it is clearly associated with the standing stone.
