On a knoll of rock outcrop in gently undulating, low-lying pastureland, with wide views E-SW and overlooking Muckanagh Lough to the S. Indicated on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This levelled subtriangular ecclesiastical enclosure (c. 155m N-S; c. 125m E-W) with curving sides and rounded corners is no longer visible at ground level. It can be clearly seen in a photograph taken by Leo Swan (1991, 98). Partial traces are visible, particularly NW-NE on ortho photos (OSi MapGenie 2012-2018). In the SW of the enclosure is a walled graveyard (CL011-022004-), in which are the ruins of Kilkeedy Church (CL011-022003-) and a medieval house (CL011-022005-). Just SE of the graveyard is a holy well (CL011-022006-). Situated in an enclosed graveyard (CL011-022004-), itself within an ecclesiastical enclosure (CL011-022001-) on a knoll of rock outcrop in gently undulating, low-lying pastureland, with wide views E to SW and overlooking Muckanagh Lough to the S. Indicated and named ‘Kilkeedy Church (in ruins)’ on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Dedicated to St Caoide, patron saint of the parish. According to the OS Letters of 1839, the patron’s annual festival was celebrated here on 3rd March (Comber 1997, 38). This church is oriented E-W and is an undifferentiated nave and chancel (int. dims. 17.2m E-W; 6.2m N-S) with a sacristy or priest's house added at the E end of the N wall. The walls (Wth c. 0.76m) are built of roughly coursed limestone with stressed quoinstones. All of the walls stand to their original height (c. 3.8m on int. of S wall) except the W wall which is reduced to a footing (and already had been when described in the OS Letters (ibid.)). The E wall has a base batter. The window in this wall is totally obscured by ivy but was recorded in the OS Letters (ibid.) as ‘a gothic window of considerable size and neatness’. Westropp (1900-1902, 138) also described this window as finely made, with two broad ogee-headed lights, and a semicircular head over the splay. He considered its N jamb to probably date to the late 12th century. Near the E end of the S wall there is a small round-headed window (Wth 0.11m; H 1.13m) set in a lintelled embrasure. A blocked-up square-headed doorway and an aumbry were noted in the SE corner by Swinfen (1992, 45). A plain round-headed doorway (Wth 0.88m; H 1.74m) near the E end of the N wall leads into the two-storey sacristy/priest’s house (CL011-022005-) which was built against the E end of the N wall. Tie-stones at the E end of the exterior of the S wall indicate a former structure at that location. A font (CL011-022007-) formerly stood in the middle of the church. Its present location is unknown. Situated in the SW part of an ecclesiastical enclosure (CL011-022001-) on a knoll of rock outcrop in gently undulating, low-lying pasture, with wide views E-SW and overlooking Muckanagh Lough to the S. Indicated and named ‘Graveyard’ on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This subrectangular graveyard (c. 49m E-W; c. 48m N-S) is defined by a drystone wall. In the NW part of the graveyard lies Kilkeedy Church (CL011-022003-) and a medieval house (CL011-022005-). The graveyard includes uninscribed headstones and pedestals (Large 2011), as well as more modern graves. Extending E-W across the middle of the graveyard is a grass-covered scarp (Wth 1.5m; H 1.8m) and adjacent remains of a wall footing. As indicated on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan, this scarp may be part of the graveyard’s original boundary before it was enlarged to S and E. Just SE of the current graveyard wall is a holy well (CL011-022006-). Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 24 January 2023 - CL011-022005: House - medieval, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL011-022005-. Abutting the E end of the N wall of Kilkeedy Church (CL011-022003-), in an enclosed graveyard (CL011-022004-) which in turn lies within an ecclesiastical enclosure (CL011-022001-). Indicated as abutting the church on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This building (int. dims. 5.86m N-S; 5.15m E-W) is entered through a plain, round-headed doorway (Wth 0.88m; H 1.74m) in the N wall of the church. It is traditionally considered to be the priest’s house (e.g. Westropp 1900-1902), and may include the church sacristy. The building had two floors (total H 4.15m); five corbels in both the E and W walls (H of walls to top of corbels 2.15m) remain from the joist supports for the upper floor. The walls (Wth of E wall 0.87m) are c. 1m higher than the N wall of the church. A gap (Wth c. 0.05m) is developing between the S end of the W wall and the N wall of the church. In the ground floor there is an ogee-headed window (Wth 0.25m; H 1.45m) at the S end of in the E wall, with three leaden bar-holes, hanging-eye, spudstone and long draw-bar socket (L 0.55m) in the S jamb. The window is in a lintelled embrasure. There is also an aumbry (Wth 0.45m; H 0.45m; depth 0.41m) in the E wall. A large table tomb (2.8m E-W; 1.6m N-S; H 0.8m) stands flush with the E side of the church doorway. In the wall over the tomb is a commemorative plaque which reads ‘1706. I.H.S. This tumbe is made by Fa. Con Mullan, for him and his family in his ancestors Chapel. To whom God be merciful.’ On the first floor there is a small rectangular light toward the N end of the W wall and a doorway in the N wall with two putlog holes underneath to support a platform. There is a small light at the centre of the E wall. A gable rises over the N wall. Swinfen (1992, 44) notes the presence of fireplaces. Situated near the S end of an ecclesiastical enclosure (CL011-022001-), in a hollow outside the SE corner of a graveyard (CL011-022004-), in gently undulating, low-lying pasture. Indicated and named ‘Toberkeedy’ on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Probably dedicated to St Caoide like the adjacent church (CL011-022003-) within the graveyard, with a pattern day here on 3rd March (Comber 1997, 38). This overgrown holy well is defined by an ivy-covered drystone wall (H 1m) (Kirby 2021), forming an oval enclosure (int. dims. 4.8m NE-SW; 3.7m NW-SE). There is an entrance gap (int. Wth 1m; ext. Wth 0.7m outside, 1m inside) at the NW. Within this enclosure lies the well itself, a large natural basin (L 2.4m; Wth 1.4m; D 1m) in the exposed limestone bedrock which was dry when inspected in 2000. At that time the landowner reported that the well was recognised and the wall built when the land was cleared c. 20 years previously. According to the landowner, before that clearance there had been walls and features around the well, including a probable track/roadway to the W. Brew (1998, 58) records an account of a very large tree at the well in c. 1930, and a tradition that this well was then considered to be blessed. The well is said to cure eye ailments (Kirby 2021). This record is for the original location of a ‘holy water font’ that was noted in the middle of Kilkeedy church (CL011-022003-) in the OS Letters (Comber 1997, 38). It was regarded as not being in its original position. Westropp (1900-1902, 138-9) observed that this font had spiral fluting. It went missing sometime after his visit (Swinfen 1992, 45).
