On a gentle S-facing slope in rough pasture, overgrowth and limestone outcrop, within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). This suboval enclosure (int. dims. 25m E-W; 21.5m N-S; ext. dims. 30.8m E-W; 23m N-S) is defined by a wall of partly grass-covered large boulders (max. L 1m; H 0.7m; Wth 0.5m) at NNW-WSW, and by a scarp (max. H 1.3m; Wth 5m) down to the interior elsewhere (WSW-NNW). A grass-covered field wall (max. Wth 3m; H 0.6m) is traceable running NW-SE in the N interior, and extending beyond the perimeter of the enclosure. Several large stones in the centre of the enclosure may be associated with this wall. In the S interior a grass-covered curving stone wall (L 7m; Wth 0.4m; H 0.4m) runs parallel with the enclosure wall, at a distance of 3-4m away. The following image has been uploaded: CL008-057009-_01.jpg Aerial view of enclosure from NW (ASI aerial photo, SMR file) Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 25 October 2022 - CL008-059002: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL008-059002-. On a natural mound on the W bank of the Aille River, in hilly pastureland with higher ground to SE and NE but otherwise commanding wide views. Indicated on the 1842 OS 6-inch map and named 'Doonmacfelim Castle (in ruins)'. Probably built by the O'Connor’s, but by 1570 was under the ownership of Turlough O'Brien (Ua Cróinín and Breen 1997). In 1577 there is a record of one of the O'Brien's probable tenants: one Owen, son of Richard McGillereogh, gentleman, of Doonmacfelim, was pardoned but fined one cow and ordered to keep the peace (ibid.). After the 1641 Irish rebellion this tower house was taken from Donough O'Brien and given to John Fitzgerald, and then passed through several owners until finally recorded as the property of William MacNamara in 1752 (ibid.). By the time of his visit, Westropp (1900, 287) found it to be 'a mere fragment, quite defaced, and with a vaulted lower room.' Described by Ua Cróinín and Breen (1997) as an unusual and very poorly preserved rectangular tower house (10.4m N-S; 8.7m E-W). Only the S wall stood to almost its full height (c. 9.5m), revealing that it was originally at least three storeys high. The tower house was built of dressed limestone blocks, almost regularly coursed and rising from a battered base set on a narrow plinth/footing. The size of blocks and quality of masonry deteriorated above 7m. There was a vaulted ceiling over the ground and first floors. The main entrance (demolished) was located in the N wall, leading to the ground-floor hall. Unusually there was no evidence for a porter's lodge, while the circular stairwell (diam. 2m) stood in the NW corner of the ground-floor hall. There was a wide garderobe opening at the N end of the E wall, its shaft leading down from the second floor. There were three damaged and blocked loops in the E, S and W walls, within vaulted, squared and splayed embrasures. There was an aumbry in the N wall of the W embrasure. The surviving S side of the first floor incorporated a secret lintelled chamber (L 2.9m; Wth 1m; H 2m) in the thickness of the S wall, lit by a small loop in the E wall. This chamber also had an unusual circular spy-hole in its W wall, allowing one to look out through the back of an aumbry in a first-floor loop embrasure (squared and splayed). Also unusually, there was a water conduit into the secret chamber through a carefully carved stone and a very narrow hole in the N wall. Its splayed ends possibly allowed the conduit to be covered when not in use. Access to the secret chamber was solely through a trapdoor in a passage on the second floor (a drop of almost 4m). The only other surviving feature in the second floor was another squared and splayed embrasure with a narrow square loop, also in the S wall. An inspection of the tower house in 1998 found it unaltered in the interim, apart from the accumulation of domestic and agricultural refuse in the interior, as well as evidence for burning here. There is an enclosure (CL008-060----) c. 107m to the NE and a mound (CL008-146----) c. 144m to the ESE. This levelled subcircular enclosure (15m E-W; 12m N-S) is faintly visible in aerial imagery (OSi Aerial Premium 2013-2018) but on inspection in 1998 was traceable on the ground only as an area of rough undulating ground, piles of field-clearance rubble and domestic refuse. On quite level limestone outcrop with some overgrowth but offering wide views, especially to the S, over the surrounding extensive multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). This well-preserved subcircular cashel (int. dims. 21.5 N-S; 19.25 E-W) is defined by a double-faced wall (Wth 1.72-2.4m; int. H 0.1-1.25m; ext. H 0.1-1.7m) which is slightly wider at the base. Lying flat on top of the wall at the WSW are three very large limestone slabs (max. L 2.8m). A possible hollow underneath them (obscured by wall tumble and overgrowth) suggests a partly exposed intramural chamber. A small rectangular animal shelter is built against the outer wall-face at the NNW. Within the very overgrown and stony interior of the cashel are several upright slabs. There is another cashel (CL008A003005-) c. 29m to the NE, another (CL008A003003-) c. 38m to the SW, and an enclosure (CL008A003009-) c. 84m to the NE. Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as 'Mound' in the RMP (1996). H 0.4m) with associated tumble (Wth 2m on either side of the wall). At S and NNW two distinct outer wall-faces are visible, suggesting that the wall was stepped. The cashel interior slopes very gently to SW and is covered with loose boulders. There is another cashel (CL008A003004-) c. 29m to SW, and an enclosure (CL008A003009-) c. 38m to ENE. On a gentle rise in rough pasture surrounded by limestone outcrop, offering wide views across the surrounding extensive multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Hachured and named 'Caheradoon' on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map, and 'Cathair an Dúin' on Robinson's (1977) map. This subcircular cashel (est. c. 50m NW-SE; c. 45m NE-SW; or diam. c. 33m (Westropp 1905, 358)) is defined only by an intermittently visible low grass-covered rubble bank (Wth 2-3m; max. H 0.3m). There is grass-covered rubble throughout the interior. Westropp (ibid.) noted a local account that this cashel had been dismantled in the mid-19th century in order to provide stone for the construction of a nearby road. He proposed that given the commanding position of this cashel, it had probably been 'the chief fort of the place' (ibid.).
