On a natural rise in hilly pastureland, situated midway along the SE wall of a bawn (CL008-087002-). Overlooked by higher ground to S and SE, but otherwise commanding a panoramic view. Named ‘Doonnagore Castle (in Ruins)’ on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Probably built by the O’Connors in the 14th/15th century, by 1570 the castle was under the ownership of Sir Donnel O’Brien. In 1582 Brian MacCahill O’Connor was recorded as the owner, suggesting that perhaps the O’Connors were still living there under the O’Briens (Ua Cróinín and Breen 1997). Toward the end of that century the castle became a possession and residence of the MacClancy family, brehons of the O’Briens of Thomond. Local tradition holds that Boetius MacClancy tried and sentenced to death many survivors of the Spanish Armada at the castle (ibid.). In 1601 the O’Connors were again recorded in connection with Doonnagore, but it appears that the MacClancys held the castle until the 1641 rebellion, after which it was taken from them. The castle passed to John Sarsfield. By 1719 Francis Gore owned Doonnagore and subsequently granted it John Vandeleur of Kilrush (ibid.). The OS Letters of 1839 recorded that the castle had been ’lately repaired by Counsellor Gore’. This well-preserved but restored four-floored cylindrical tower house (diam. 8.9m) was described by Ua Cróinín and Breen (1997) as very well built of random-coursed local flagstones. The new pointed arched entrance doorway was at NE, over which was a machicoulis supported by two corbels. Inside, stairs ascended to SE within the thickness of the tower wall (Wth almost 2m). On the ground floor (int. diam. 4m) there was a squared and splayed loop embrasure at SW. Two large aumbrys at W and NW may once have been loop embrasures according to Westropp (1899-1901, 355). Under this floor there had been a small round cellar (diam. 3m) but this was filled and covered by the time of by Ua Cróinín and Breen’s (1997) visit. The ceiling was of oak, supported by joists. The small circular first-floor room had a stone-vaulted dome ceiling with four lintelled embrasures: those at SW and NE containing a square window, that at W a narrow loop, and that at N a shot-hole with little aumbrys on either side. The second-floor room had an oak ceiling supported by corbels in the wall. There was a small fireplace with a segmented lintel above, and three loop embrasures with ogee heads, at W, N and E. There were two aumbrys, at S and NW. To S of the W embrasure was a slop-stone in a small aumbry, emptying into a garderobe shaft. To W of the N embrasure a staircase descended to a small lock-up chamber with a tiny loop, which could be bolted from within in case of attack. A similar chamber was located to S of the E embrasure, and also reached by descending a staircase; however, this chamber was bolted from the outside and may have been a prison cell of sorts. The circular third-floor room had an elaborate conical oak roof with central king-post. The entrance door under a stone lintel was fitted with a curved oak door to fit the doorway shape. There was a vaulted embrasure at NE with a double-light cusped ogee-headed window. To the left of the embrasure was a narrow door, opening to a steep intramural staircase which led up to the wallwalk on the conical roof, ringed with high crenellations. At the SE of the third-floor room was a garderobe chamber (now fitted with a modern toilet). The garderobe shaft emptied on the E side of the tower, through a large opening at first-floor level which contained four stone lugs, perhaps for wooden shutters to close it when danger threatened. On the S side of the third-floor room was a wide embrasure with a double-light cusped ogee-headed window. To W was an embrasure with a single ogee-headed loop. To NW was a double over-and-under ambry with a stone shelf between, and to N was a wide embrasure, now with a large triple-light window with three elliptical heads. On a natural rise in hilly pastureland, and surrounding Doonnagore Castle (CL008-087----). The land all around slopes steeply, except at NW where there is a D-shaped berm-like area. Overlooked by higher ground to S and SE, but otherwise commanding a panoramic view. Indicated as a wall-defined rectangle on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. On the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map the NE side is hachured rather than being defined by a wall. This restored subrectangular bawn (38m NE-SW; 22.5m NW-SE) with pointed NE side is defined by a coursed and mortared limestone wall, several sections of which were excavated in 1974 by Prof. Etienne Rynne (NUIG) (Ua Cróinín and Breen 1997). The double-faced walls (av. basal Wth 1.4m, narrowing to c. 1m at top; H 3m) with rubble core were found to be built on a foundation of large stones (H c. 0.7m; Wth 1.4-1.7m). The wall foundation in the SW corner had been strengthened in the SW corner by three additional large boulders, protruding over 0.5m beyond the outer wall-face. The original entrance (Wth 1.4m) found by Rynne was located c. 9m SW of the tower house, with pivot-stones showing that it was closed by a pair of doors on gudgeons (diam. c. 0.07-0.08m). Against the bawn wall on the NNE side Rynne found the possible gable-end of a building, including a chimney and part of a fireplace, as well as an intramural chamber with a lintelled ceiling. In the interior of the bawn the excavation revealed a short length of wall running SE from the NNW corner of the bawn. Rynne concluded from this that the original bawn was smaller, being defined by this wall, the N wall and the E wall as far as the tower house, which would have stood at the S corner of that early bawn. The excavation recovered two bronze harp-pegs, a bronze and iron buckle, an iron needle and an iron nail, dated to the 16th/17th century. The restored bawn wall (Wth 0.8m, widening to 2m at N; int. H 1m at W; ext. H 3m at NE) is built of coursed and mortared limestone, capped with flagstones. There are two entrances at SE, one on either side of the tower house (CL008-087----) which is abutted at NE and SW by the bawn wall. Set into the N wall are the remains of a lintelled fireplace (Wth 1.55m; H 1.7m; D 0.75m). Immediately to E of this is a doorway (Wth 0.69m; H 1.76m) leading to short passage (L 0.41m) and chamber (1.9m E-W; c. 1m N-S) within the bawn wall. To W of the fireplace is a (possibly original or modern) small, narrow, unroofed intramural passage with steps leading to the modern top of the N wall. Several grass-covered limestone blocks in the SW corner of the bawn may be the remains of a building or structure; alternatively these may be part of the reinforced foundations identified by Rynne, or they could be modern as the bawn wall appears to be partly rebuilt in this area. The grass-covered bawn interior is flat and level in the N half, but the S half slopes gently down to SSE. In pasture near a W-facing slope, with higher ground to the E and wide views to W-N. Named ‘Caher’ and indicated with an OS trigonometrical station (OD 339’) in the S sector on the first edition (1842) of the OS 6-inch map, and also named 'Caher' and partially hachured on the later, Cassini edition (1920) of the map. A small, almost circular area (13m N-S; 12.5m E-W) is defined SSW-SE by a low earth and stone bank (Wth 1.5m; max. int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.6-0.8m), and by a faint, low scarp (max. H 0.1m) SE-SSW. Several large boulders (possibly field-clearance material) lie on the bank at W. The W sector of the slightly undulating interior is crossed NNW-SSE by a later earthen field boundary. On a rise in pasture, with land sloping steeply all around and wide views from W to N. This poorly preserved subcircular cashel is defined from NNE to WSW by a steep scarp (H 0.4-1m), and from WSW to NNE by the footings of a double-faced wall (est. Wth 2m; ext. H 1m), outside of which is a berm (Wth 2m) and scarp (H c. 0.4m), sparse remains of collapsed stone revetting and horizontal foundation slabs, as well as downslope tumble (Wth 1-2m). The berm and scarp may have been constructed in order to prevent erosion or slippage, as this is the steepest part of the slope. A later drystone wall is built over the inner face of the cashel wall from WSW to NNE. The interior is highest in the centre and slopes down (H c. 1m) to the perimeter. There is a souterrain (CL008A004002-) in the N half.
