Situated in rough pasture on a flat terrace between a higher ridge to the N and ground sloping away a short distance to the S with good views throughout. Named ‘Lisnaleagaun’ on all editions of the OS 6-inch maps, this fort was called ‘Studdert’s Fort in the mid-nineteenth century and ‘Lios an Chairn’ in 1835 by O’Curry (Murphy 1996, 33). An oval bivallate raised rath (int. diam. 28m; overall diam. c. 75m) defined by an inner bank (Wth 9.5-13m; H 0.2-0.8m), a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth at base 4-5m) and a lower outer bank (Wth 7.5-11m; int. H 0.8-2m; ext. H 0.6-1.2m). The inner bank is reduced to a scarp in places and the outer bank is considerably reduced in many places between NW and ENE. A gap at WNW (Wth 3.2m) with slight causeway may be the original entrance. Parts of the banks have been denuded by cattle exposing a considerable amount of stone. The interior is uneven and slopes significantly to the W. A souterrain (CL056-044002-) is in the SW sector. Westropp (1909, 116) notes that ‘Lisnaleagaun’ translates as the fort of the pillar-stone but that the standing stone (CL056-044003-) was no longer there. Situated in the E sector of a ringfort (CL056-044001-). The area is heavily overgrown with brambles. On inspection in 2003 the opening (Wth 0.55m; int. H 0.75m) to the souterrain was accessible on the outer slope of the bank at S. A stretch of walling (L 1.4m) extended from the entrance at E. The opening was roofed by one large lintel and led to a stone-built oval-shaped chamber (2.4m x 1.9m; H 0.9-1.15m) roofed by three large lintels. A small creep (Wth 0.38m; H 0.45m; D 1m) in the NE wall of the chamber was roofed by two large flags. The flag to the NE lay on recent clay fill. The creep led to a roofless passage (L 2.2m NE-SW; Wth 1.65m; D 1.2-1.4m) with no evident stonework remaining. Immediately to the NE another creep formed a baulk (Wth 1.1m) leading to another roofless chamber (L 1.6m; Wth 1.2m; D 1-1.2m). Some digging NW of this chamber was apparent. According to Murphy (1996, 33-6) the souterrain was first discovered in 1818 and in 1867 was examined at the instigation of Markus Keane. It was also described by Westropp (1909, 116-18) who gives the main orientation as ENE-WSW and the overall length as 36ft (10.97m). At that time the roofs had already been robbed out and the chambers were overgrown. In a flat field of rushes overlooked by a ridge to N. A flat, thin standing stone (max. H 2.05m; Wth c. 0.4m; T c. 0.15m ) oriented NE-SW. The top slopes and is slightly higher at the NE end. The stone leans slightly to the SE. In 2003 a small set stone was noted at the base. A ringfort (CL056-044----) is c. 110m to the SW. Detached three-bay two-storey over part-raised basement red brick bank and manager's house, built c. 1890, with two-bay two-storey advanced bay to left having single-bay full-height canted bay window and square-headed door opening. Hipped artificial slate roof with brick chimneystacks, cut-stone copings, deep eaves and limestone eaves course. Red brick walls with cut-stone plinth, string courses and dressings to openings. Carved scrolled pediment over entrance door. Timber sliding sash and replacement windows to openings. Timber panelled door with overlight. Retaining interior features. Red brick gate pier and plinths with limestone dressings and wrought-iron railings and gates. Cut stone steps leading to entrance door.

Timber panelled door with overlight. Replacement windows to openings. Retaining interior features. Stone steps leading to entrance door. Rendered plinth walls with cut-stone copings to site.

Terraced four-bay two-storey house, built c. 1870, with render and tiled shopfront to ground floor. Pitched artificial slate roof with clay ridge cresting, rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls with continuous label mouldings having decorative stops to first floor openings. Shopfront comprising fluted pilasters with inset high relief tile panels flanking openings, having figures forming consoles, fascia, lettering and moulded cornice above. Segmental-arched openings to first floor with timber sliding sash windows. Replacement fittings to ground floor openings.

Timber shopfront comprising chamfered pilasters flanking tripartite fixed window and timber panelled door with overlight, having fascia and moulded cornice above. Segmental-arched door opening with timber pilaster doorcase, timber panelled door and fanlight. Timber sliding sash windows.

Detached seven-bay single-storey railway station, built 1892, with pair of single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porches, full-length canopy over platform and two-bay single-storey flat-roofed lower return to rear. Glazed canopy with cast-brackets supported by cast-iron columns and having timber sheeted gable ends. Rendered walls with painted brick plinth, quoins and block-and-start architraves. Freestanding double-height gable-fronted Church of Ireland church, built c.1845, to design attributed to the Pain brothers, with gabled projecting porch, four-bay nave elevations and vestry to rear. Pitched slate and artificial slate roofs with cut-stone bellcote. Dressed stone walls with cut-stone buttresses. Hood mouldings to chancel and entrance gable windows. Lancet openings with ashar dressings and cast-iron and timber traceried windows. Pointed arch opening with timber matchboard door. Rubble stone boundary walls with cast-iron piers and gates, c.1935. Aedicule to side boundary wall with castellated parapet and urn finial.
