- CL033-033001: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL033-033001-. Situated about 2 miles NW of Ennis town near the top of a steep E-facing slope within a large graveyard (CL033-033002-). No historical references are known for this ecclesiastical site but its foundation is sometimes attributed to St Conald (or Connal) (Gleeson and Gwynn 1962, 33-4; Swinfen 1992, 22). Westropp (1894, 335) refers to its taxation (Ecclesia de Drumleb) in 1302-6. The present church dates to the fifteenth century but incorporates features of an earlier church. Westropp (1900-02, 143) assigns a date of the 11th century to the S wall and the windows but a 15th-century date to the E gable. This became the medieval parish church of Drumcliff, incorporating both Ennis town and Clonroad. It is known to have been still in use in 1622 when Bishop John Rider of Killaloe states that the Protestant incumbent was ‘Thomas Prichard, a grave minister and preacher; a man of good life and conversation, inducted in Anno 1617’ (Swinfen 1992, 22). The conserved remains of a rectangular church (ext. dims. 20.05m E-W; 7.85m N-S; int. dims. 16.3m E-W; 6.3m N-S) with evidence of rebuilding. The walls are of uncoursed limestone rubble. The N wall is featureless and survives to full height except for 3m at the W end which is reduced to foundation level. The E wall has a twin-light mullioned ogee-headed window (H 1.55m) with a square hood-moulding externally. There is an aumbry (Wth 0.73m; H 0.55m; D 0.2m) at the S end of the E wall. A gently pointed doorway (Wth 0.9m; H 2m) in the S wall (5.2m from the W end) has a rounded chamfered rear-arch (Wth 1.25m. H 2.6m) with steps down to the interior and a surviving drawbar- slot. To the W of the door the wall projects inwards for 0.3m. A similar projection on the E side of the door is visible on Westropp’s plan (1894, 334) and so the surround of the doorway sat proud of the internal wall line. There are two windows in the S wall both with wide internal splays. The one further E is flat-headed with an external chamfer and rebate although this window was described by Westropp (ibid., 333) as having ‘a semicircular head and moulding’. A third window with a wide splay was blocked by the insertion of the E wall and so the church extended further E at some time. The dressed stones of the W splay of this window are still visible. The W wall has a simple, round-headed, single-light window set within a cutstone round-headed splayed embrasure placed high in the gable. It is not centrally placed, being to the N of the apex, indicating that the entire church was rebuilt. There are traces of a corbel table at the top of the N and S walls at the E end. The ruined remains of a round tower (CL033-033003-) lie c. 10m to the N. The church and round tower are national monuments in State care, no. 204. Indicated as an oval graveyard (c. 90m N-S; c. 75m E-W) on the OS first edition 6-inch map but now extended further S (max. dims. 200m N-S; c. 160m E-W). A steeply sloping and extensive graveyard defined by a 19th-century stone wall with mature yew trees and many 18th and 19th century tombstones. Drumcliff church (CL033-033001-) and round tower (CL033-033003-) lie at the N extremity. The graveyard contains a pauper’s grave at the SW corner where the poor, particularly from the 19th-century workhouse, are buried. There is also the unmarked mass grave of some 350 cholera victims from an outbreak in the 1830’s and an ill-defined famine grave from 1846-9 where it is thought more than 2000 people are buried. Situated near the top of a steep E-facing slope almost at the N perimeter of Drumcliff graveyard (CL033-033002-) c. 10m N of the church (CL033-033001-). A ruined circular tower (diam. at base 4.88m, int. diam. 2.44m) standing to 11m on the N side but only to 3m on the S (Wth of wall at S 1.14m), built of coursed roughly squared and dressed limestone interspersed with large irregular boulders and smaller stones. The courses are more regular above the first metre and the walls have a mortared rubble core. The interior is filled with earth to the level of the surviving S side. A first-floor doorway at a height of 6m was evident in 1808 and was described as having a moulding round it (Barrow 1979, 59). Three windows were also present, one of which faced W, 7.3m above the ground. This window appears to be square-headed in a 19th-century drawing in the Royal Irish Academy (ibid.). Offsets for the first, second and third floors are clearly visible in the interior. Two pairs of non-structural corbels can be seen, one at first and one at second floor level. The round tower and the church are national monuments in State care, no. 204. Situated on top of Ryan Hill. A large D-shaped area (c. 140m E-W; c. 100m N-S) with a straight N side, defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.6m) at NE and an earthen bank (Wth 5.2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.5m) and outer fosse (Wth of base 3.5m; D 0.5m) at SW with traces of a scarp NE-SW. A NE-SW field wall bisects the enclosure and S of this is an inner scarp (H 0.5m) (diam. c. 70m NE-SW) that does not continue N of the field wall. Within that again is a rectangular area (32m NNE-SSW; 18m WNW-ESE) defined by a scarp (max. H 0.7m at E) and a slight bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.4m) at S which is also cut by and extant only S of the field wall. A possible church (CL033-034002-) lay in the N portion of the rectangular area. Within a large enclosure (CL033-034001-) on top of Ryan Hill. A building named ‘Temple Varaghan’ is indicated on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Very little is known of its history and it is not certain that this was a church site. Westropp (1900-02, 144) refers to ‘Templeharaghan’ and describes it as being entirely demolished, having stood within a fort ‘now nearly levelled’. Referred to by Swinfen (1992, 133) as ‘Temple Harigan’, she states that there is mention of a Templeharraghan – alias Killargreayn – in the 1195 charter of Clare Abbey and in papal letters. On a slight ENE-WSW ridge on the floodplain of the River Fergus. Investigated in 1905 by Diana Parkinson, who opened about one third of the crannog. She recorded that it was composed wholely of stone laid down on marl. There was no wood component, and wooden artefacts were not recovered. No structures were identified within the monument, but large quantities of bones were recovered. Stone, bronze and iron artefacts were also recovered. It survives as a grass- and scrub-covered mound of earth and stone (diam. of base 14.5m E-W; diam. of top 7m E-W; H 1.5-1.9m). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 May 2016

On the S shore of Ballyalla Lake. A small oval area (c. 9.5m SW-NE; c. 5m NW-SE) c. 15m from the shore and apparently composed of stone was noted on drone photography by John Tracey in 2022. An image on Apple Maps shows a possible small causeway leading to what may be a related site nearer the shore. Four other crannogs are known from this lake (CL033-035----, CL033-036----, CL033-037----, and CL033-040001-). One (CL033-040001-) is submerged and has a submerged causeway (CL033-040002-) leading to it. One (CL033-035----) was excavated in 1904/5 and was found to be composed wholly of stone laid down on marl.
