On level, exposed limestone pavement with Loch Gealáin visible to the SW and Mulagh More rising to the E. Noted by the Megalithic Survey of Ireland (Ó Nualláin 1989, 134). This partly damaged wedge tomb (min. L 3.7m) is orientated NE-SW. It is defined by a large, upstanding sidestone (L 3.7m; H 1.5m; T 0.09m) on the SE, and by three smaller sidestones (L 1.28-1.56m; H 0.52-1.4m; T 0.12-0.15m) on the NW. Two of the latter slabs lean to the NW, and a broken upper fragment (L 1.27m) of the SW slab lies prostrate immediately to the NW. A large roofstone fragment (L 2.4m; Wth 0.78m; T 0.12m) lies within the NE end of the tomb chamber, leaning against the SE sidestone. Otherwise, the tomb interior is strewn with rubble. A flat-lying slab (L 1.45m; T 0.18m) immediately to the SW of the tomb may have originally formed part of it. A later drystone livestock pen is built against the outer face of the SE sidestone. Within a thicket of trees and bushes on an improved pasture shelf overlooking lower ground c. 45m to the SE which is liable to flood from Coolreash Lough to the N. Indicated and labelled ‘Cromlech’ on the both the first (1842) and later, Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. Westropp (1905, 212) noted that this wedge tomb was still inhabited into then-recent times, ‘forming the bedroom of a small cabin’. Described by de Valera and Ó Nualláin (1961, 49) as a well-preserved but overgrown trapezoidal wedge tomb (L 2.4m; Wth 1.45m at SW, narrowing to 1.2m at NE; H 1.6m at SW, sloping to 1.2m at NE) embedded in the centre of an oval mound (c. 11m NE-SW; 8m NW-SE; max. H c. 1m) on which lay many stones, perhaps including some from field clearance. Trees and bushes grew on and around the mound, and its SE part was obscured by a later small stone enclosure. The tomb chamber was orientated NE-SW, with a single slab on each side. Both sidestones leaned slightly inward and bore traces of dressing on their top edges, which sloped from SW to NE and were longer at their protruding top edges than at their base (NW sidestone L 3.05m at top, 2.3m at base; max. H c. 1.4m; T 0.1-0.2m; SE sidestone surviving L 1.45m at base; max. H c. 1.16m; T 0.15-0.2m), although the SW end of the SE sidestone appeared to have been broken relatively recently. Westropp (op. cit.) observed that the inner faces of these sidestones had been ‘picked to a smooth surface which I hardly ever noted elsewhere, even to a much lesser degree.’ The fine rectangular NE backstone (H 1.15m; L 1.1m; T 0.15m) also leaned inward slightly, and seemingly had dressed top and side edges. There was a gap (0.12m) between the backstone and the lower parts of each sidestone (0.12m from NW sidestone; 0.3m from SE sidestone). A large displaced slab (H 1.85m; Wth 0.75m; T 0.1-0.2m) leaned against the SW end of the NW sidestone, partly closing the SW end of the chamber. The roofstone (L 3.25m; Wth 2m at SW, narrowing to 1.4m at NE; T 0.15m) completely covered the chamber, resting on the sidestones and the NE backstone. Westropp (op. cit.) described ‘curious “footmarks” and other depressions’ on this roofstone. A later wall extended SW from the SW corner of the tomb chamber. Inspections in 1999 and 2007 found the tomb to be unaltered in the interim, apart from a thickening of overgrowth. In 2007, a path to the tomb from the SE was created. Listed as ‘Fulachta fiadh’ in the RMP (1996), on the basis of a map annotation by Tom Coffey (1994, SMR file). This fulacht fia comprises a kidney-shaped, grass- and moss-covered mound (13m NE-SW; 7.3m NW-SE; H 0.3m) of burnt stone which is open towards the SE. On a very low, overgrown E-W ridge in pasture, with limestone pavement c. 140m to the N. Drawn and labelled as ‘Cromlech’ on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. This megalithic tomb comprises a single, large upright slab, orientated N-S (L 2.5m N-S; H 1.2m; T 0.2m) set in a cairn (10.6m N-S; 8.2m E-W; H c. 0.6m). There are two large stones lying prone adjacent to the upright slab: one (L 2.4m; Wth 1.8m) immediately to the E, and the second (L 1.7m; Wth 1.1m) just to the SE. A third, smaller slab (L 1.3m; Wth 0.6m) lies further to the E, in the vicinity of which there is also a NW-SE orientated pavement-like cluster (L 2.3m; Wth 1.6m) of smaller flat-lying, flat-topped slabs (each c. L 0.3m; Wth 0.3m) which are unrelated to the tomb. Westropp (1905, 212) interpreted the upright stone as the W side of a ‘dolmen’. De Valera and Ó Nualláin (1961, 57) proposed that this may have been a wedge tomb, observing that the slab set on edge resembled the sidestones of many wedge tombs in NW Clare. There is a cist (CL017-076----) c. 260m to the W, and a wedge tomb (CL010-110----) c.685m to the ENE. Shown as a partly raised oval shaped area on the OS 25-inch plan (1897) and named ‘Lisheenalaughil Childrens Burial Ground (Disused)’ and similarly depicted and named on the Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Burial ground’ in the RMP (1996). This children’s burial ground comprises a tree-covered, oval-shaped cairn (10.7m NE-SW; 5.2m NW-SE; min. H 0.2m at SW, rising to 1.5m at NE). Some eight probable grave-marker stones are visible and appear to be lying on, rather than bring set into, the cairn. This poorly preserved and tree-covered subcircular cashel (int. dims. 35.7m N-S; 34m E-W) is defined from ENE-S-SW by a double-faced stone wall (Wth 1.4-2.5m; int. H 1.2-1.5m; ext. H 1.3m) with a livestock gap at ENE. From SW-N-ENE the cashel wall has been removed and the perimeter here is defined by a low, stone-covered earthen bank (Wth 4-5m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.5-1m). However, vestiges of the cashel’s original double-faced wall (Wth 1.7m) are visible at WNW. The footings of a later field wall (Wth 0.6m) run NW-SE across the E part of the interior.
