In pasture, on the steep S-facing slopes of Knockatemple, a long ridge orientated NE-SW parallel to the Dealagh River estuary. The site is overlooked by higher ground to the N, with panoramic views to the S and W. Indicated on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps with the NE quadrant named ‘Glebe’ on the former. The identity of the Lonáin referenced in the townland name Cill Easpaig Lonáin has been disputed. Both O’Donovan and Frost identified ‘Bishop Lonane’ with St Flannan of Killaloe (Swan 1987, 162; Frost 1893, 108), although this was queried by Westropp (1910, 152). Westropp identified the founder as ‘Bishop Lonan, a friend of St Maccreiche’ (1900-1, 136). The site had a parish church (CL015-059002-) in the later medieval period (Ní Ghabhláin 1996, 40). The ecclesiastical enclosure was identified by Swan (1987). A subcircular ecclesiastical enclosure (diam. c. 260m N-S) which can be traced from N to SW in the contemporary field matrix. The enclosure is visible as a curvilinear field boundary defined by a stone and earth bank with a thorn hedge along its NE quadrant and a stream along its SE quadrant. Part of the SW quadrant is visible as a slight earthwork in a field of pasture with marshy ground to the S. The NW quadrant of the enclosure has no visible remains. There is a crossroads at the centre of the enclosure. The grassed-over remains of the church (CL015-059002-) and a building (CL015-059006-) are visible on OSi MapGenie orthophotography (2013-2018) at the S extent and a trapezoidal-shaped graveyard (CL015-059003-) is to the NW of that. A holy well (CL015-059005-) is located just E of the ecclesiastical enclosure and a stone head (CL015-059004-) found there is now in the National Museum. References: Westropp, T. On a rise on a S-facing slope within an ecclesiastical enclosure (CL015-059001-). The site is overlooked by higher ground to the N, with panoramic views to the S and W. The church is not indicated on the 1840 and 1916 eds. OS 6-inch maps but its outline is clearly visible on OSi MapGenie orthophotography (2013-2018) lying c. 28m SE of the present graveyard (CL015-059003-). Listed by Sheehan (1982) among the early church-sites in north Clare. The identity of the Lonáin referenced in the name Cill Easpaig Lonáin has been disputed. Both O’Donovan and Frost identified ‘Bishop Lonane’ with St Flannan of Killaloe (Swan 1987, 162; Frost 1893, 108), although this was queried by Westropp (Westropp 1910, 152). Westropp identified the founder as ‘Bishop Lonan, a friend of St Maccreiche, to whom the well is dedicated, c.550’ (1900-1, 136; 1910, 152). The church was in use as a parish church in the later medieval period. In 1302-6 the church was valued at 26 shillings, a value shared by other churches in the diocese of Kilfenora (Ní Ghabhláin 1996, 40). Described as ‘ruinated’ during the Royal Visitation of Killaloe in 1615 (Swinfen 1992, 48). Circa 1814 Mason (1814, vol. 1, 489) noted the ‘ruins of the church built by Bishop Lenane’. O’Donovan reported that the church was ‘entirely levelled before 1839’ (Westropp 1900-1, 139). The grassed-over foundations of the church (L c. 15m E-W; Wth c. 8m) are apparent on the OSi MapGenie orthophotography just inside the NW-SE roadway. Swan noted the presence of dressed stone in the graveyard wall that probably derived from the church (Swan 1987, 161-2). A smaller building (CL015-059006-) also visible on the orthophoto lies c. 16m to the S of the church. The church (CL015-059002-) was in use as a parish church in the later medieval period (Ní Ghabhláin 1996, 40) and the remains of the building were dismantled to build graveyard wall in the 1830s (Swinfen 1992, 48). Swan noted the presence of dressed stone in wall that probably derived from the church (Swan 1987, 161-2). A wedge-shaped graveyard (55m NE-SW; 27m NW-SE) enclosed by a mortared stone wall (H 1.1m). A gate and stile at the N perimeter give access. The interior is filled with graves, largely 19th and 20th century headstones. The ground in interior of the graveyard slopes sharply down to the S and the graves are concentrated on the area of higher ground. The site of the church (CL015-059002-) is c. 30m SE of the graveyard. This record is for the original location of a carved stone head found in 1971 beside Tobarlonane holy well (CL015-059005-) adjacent to a large ecclesiastical enclosure (CL015-059001-). The head was carved in relief on one side of a trapezoidal limestone block. The face is oval with eyes, ears, eyebrows, mouth, nose, and hairline depicted. Swan (1987, 165) has drawn comparisons with Irish Romanesque stone heads, suggesting a 12th century date. He argues that the stone originated as an architectural element, probably a voussoir. Its location at the holy well was secondary and it was probably taken there from the rubble of the adjacent medieval church (CL015-059002-) as an object of veneration. The present location is in the National Museum of Ireland (DU018-160----) and a replica has been placed at the well. Reference: Swan, L 1987 A carved stone head from Killaspuglonane, Co. Clare. On a S-facing slope in marshy pasture c.40m E of a small S-flowing stream that forms part of the boundary of an ecclesiastical enclosure (CL015-059001-). Indicated and labelled ‘Toberlonane’ on both the first (1840) and Cassini (1916) editions of the OS 6-inch map. O’Donovan (Comber 1997, 94) noted the well, commenting that ‘stations continue still to be performed’, and his informants recalled the former presence of a pattern at the site but could not recall its day. The holy well lies within a C-shaped drystone walled enclosure (diam. c. 10m) flanked to the N by a boreen. The well is formed by a deep pool (D c. 1m) within a simple wellhouse formed by a U-plan drystone wall open to the SE and capped with two large flagstones (L 1m; W 0.6m and L 0.6m; W 0.8m). A carved stone head (CL015-059004-) was found ‘beside’ the holy well (Swan 1987, 159). Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch map with the surrounding land marked ‘liable to floods’. An oval enclosure (62m E-W; 49m N-S) defined by a lip (H 0.1m), which may be the remains of a bank, and an earthen scarp (H 0.7-1.3m). In pasture near the top of a gentle rise on a SE-facing slope c. 90m W of a stream. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Noted by Westropp (1905, 360) as ‘an excellent example of a rath, with deep fosse and outer ring’. A subcircular bivallate rath (44.75m NNE-SSW; 40.5m SE-NW) defined by an inner bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.55-1.35m; Wth 3.6m), a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2-3.75m), and an outer bank (Wth 1.4-3.5m; ext. H 0.25-0.6m). The outer bank has been reduced to a scarp (H 0.6m) at the NE. A gap (Wth 3m) in the inner bank at the NE may be an original entrance but no corresponding causeway crosses the fosse.
