A network of irregular field walls (c. 1.4km NE-SW; c. 600m NW-SE) visible on OS Aerial Premium (2012-2018) extending across the S half of the townland of Ballyconnoe North. Killeany church and graveyard (CL005-108003- and CL005-1080004-) lie at the NW extent and a significant settlement cluster (Cl009-004----) is c. 340m SE of that. Cashels (CL005-278---- and CL005-279----) and a possible fulacht fia (CL005-277----) also lie within this field system. On a low rocky spur projecting W from higher ridge to NE and skirted to W by a small, fast-flowing stream, within a field system (CL005-108001-). There is improved pasture to N and S. A church (CL005-108003-) and graveyard (CL005-108004-) are indicated and named ‘Killeany Church (in ruins) Graveyard’ on the 1842 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps and the stream running along its W side is named ‘Owentoberlea’. The site is reputed to have been founded by St. Enda ‘the evangelizer of Aran’ (Westropp 1900, 108). An ecclesiastical enclosure (c. 120m E-W; 90m N-S), only traceable from E to SW and at NW, defined by an internally and externally faced wall (Wth c. 1.4m; max. int. H 0.9m; max. ext. H 1m) from E to SE and a bank from SE to SW. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.7m) at SSW flanked by two large transverse slabs. The stream skirting the site to the W may have delimited it from SW to NW and a modern wall running on the line of a low cliff appears to run on the line of it at N. A ruined medieval church (CL005-108003-) is in the SE sector. The church is surrounded by a rectangular graveyard (CL005-108004-) that sits over the site of (and removed all trace of) the enclosure from E to SE. A penitential station (CL005-108005-) and cursing stones (CL005-108008-) sit on the approximate line of the enclosure within the E sector of the graveyard. A house of indeterminate date (CL005-108006-) and a kiln (CL005-108007-) are located in the N sector of the enclosure. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 15 March 2023 - CL005-108003: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL005-108003-. In the SE sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (CL005-108002-), SW of centre in a rectangular graveyard (CL005-108004-) and within a field system (CL005-108001-). Indicated and named ‘Killeany Church (in ruins)’ on the 1842 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. A church was reputedly founded here by the 5th-century Enda (Éinne) of Aran (Westropp 1900, 108), so the present church may sit on an earlier foundation. St Éinne is said to have punished the monks at Killeany for not paying enough attention to their religious duties by banishing the fish from a nearby stream (Swinfen 1992, 50). A well-preserved rectangular WNW-ESE orientated church (ext. L 20.6m), comprising a nave (L 10.4m; Wth 6.4m) and chancel (int. L 6m; Wth 5.35), divided by a chancel arch (Wth 1.1m; Wth of wall of archway 3.6m). The walls of the church (Wth 1.1m at doorway) stand to their original height and are built of roughly squared and coursed limestone blocks on the inner wall-face with larger, rougher masonry on the outer wall-face and with architectural features defined by well-dressed stones. The older stonework is of notably larger blocks. A projecting buttress supports the chancel-arch from the exterior of the S wall. The nave is entered through a robbed-out doorway in the S wall (Wth now 2.1m; H 2.1m), but with jamb and arch stones surviving on the W side of the inner wall-face. The W gable is lit by a pointed, almost ogee-headed window in a flat-headed embrasure over a narrow slit window and three corbels project from the inner wall-face c. 1m above the internal ground level. The chancel-arch is pointed in style and built from well-dressed stone but is poorly built and the joints are opening up as the wall spreads apart. The N wall has a rectangular ope (Wth 0.3m; H 0.2m; D 0.4m) at the E end with a flagstone base which inclines towards the exterior. The S wall of the nave is lit by two narrow, almost ogee-headed windows set in well-dressed, round-arched embrasures. The N and S walls are set back on a plinth internally. The E gable is lit by a narrow, round-headed window in a well-dressed round-arched embrasure with light rolled hood moulding and heavier chamfered moulding defining its sill and the lower parts of its jambs externally. There is one piece of decorative knotwork on the exterior adjacent to the hood moulding. An altar tomb (L 1.8m Wth 0.9m; H 0.8m) stands beneath the window. A broken corbel projecting from the wall face (H 0.8m) may be a remnant of a stoup. An older gable line is visible c. 1.5m below the current height. The S wall of the chancel is lit by a narrow almost ogee-headed window and there is an aumbry (Wth 0.6m; H 0.35m; D 0.35m) at corner of the S wall and E gable. Surrounding Killeany medieval church (CL005-108003-) and in the SE sector of and partially overlying the line of an ecclesiastical enclosure (CL005-108002-). A rectangular graveyard (70m WNW-ESE; 40m SSW-NNE) defined by a modern stone wall. The visible burial markers are 18th-20th century in date and are concentrated to the S of the church, with a few to its E. A penitential station (CL005-108005-) and cursing stones (CL005-108008-) sit on the approximate line of the ecclesiastical enclosure within the E sector of the graveyard. A circular depression (diam. 13m; D 1m), surrounding a large grass covered block of limestone (4m N-S; 2m E-W; H 1m), lies c. 5m E of the church, just north of the penitential station (CL005-108005-). The block appears to be bedrock and the surrounding depression may be the remains of a quarry for the church. A penitential station or altar (3.3m N-S; 2.6m E-W; H 1.2m) built of dressed stone. Rounded, water-rolled beach stones used for cursing sit on top (Westropp 1900, 132). On a penitential station (CL005-108005-) situated SE of Killeany church (CL005-108001-). 28 cursing stones were noted by Westropp (1905-8, 49) on top of a ‘rude and curious altar of large limestone blocks’. On inspection in 1997 some small water-rolled stones were still visible under a covering of sod.
