On a low rise of a gentle S-facing slope in pasture with reasonable views across a low-lying landscape NE-NW and overlooked by higher ground NW-NE. Depicted and named on OS historic mapping as ‘Burial Ground for Children’ (1842 and 1899) and ‘Children’s Burial Ground’ (1920). The monument consists of an oval mound (12m N-S; 14m E-W) defined by a low irregular scarp (Wth 2.8m; H 0.5m). The scarp is truncated by a later field boundary (long-axis E-W) across the N sector. The top of the mound is generally level. There are some flat stones and boulders protruding above ground level across the eastern side and occasionally in other places. These may represent low, uninscribed burial markers that were laid flat in more recent times. Other small angular and rounded boulders protrude from surface of the children’s burial ground and may be associated with it. The potential remains of a megalithic structure (CL027-024002-) and a bullaun stone (CL027-024003-) are located on top of the mound, off-centre to SE. A small depression is noted in the scarp at SW. Located within children’s burial ground (CL027-024001-) which forms a low mound. Not depicted on any OS historic mapping. According to Westropp (1902-04, 111), ‘The side of an undoubted dolmen stands in a disused burial place for children…….It tapers upwards from 9 feet to 5 feet 9 inches long, and is 3 feet 8 inches high and 16 inches thick, of good sandstone, and belonged, the old people say, to a box cist’. Westropp (ibid.) also indicates that ‘three other slabs lie in the grove’. Potential components of this monument still exist within the children’s burial ground and consist of a large, flat slab of limestone (L 1.25m; Wth 0.85m; T 0.2m) which is covered in mature green mosses around the edges and is weathered on the upper surface. A sandstone bullaun stone (CL027-024003-) is resting on top of this slab at the N end. A second similar stone (L 0.85m; Wth 0.75m; T 0.1m) is located 5.35m to NW. It has split from another piece of flat stone that is partially hidden under the sod, indicating that it was part of a larger slab. The edge of a third slab is protruding from the surface of the ground to the immediate E. A fourth flag stone is situated c. 2.5m to E of the second flag. Other small angular and rounded boulders protrude from surface of the children’s burial ground and may be associated with it or may derive from a former cairn around the megalithic structure. Off-centre to SE of children’s burial ground (CL027-024001-) and resting on top of a prostrate slab from a megalithic structure (CL027-024002-). Not depicted on any OS historic mapping. According to Westropp (1902-04, 111), ‘South of Kiltanon House, in a grove of trees, lies a sandstone block resting on a slab, 3 feet by 4 feet. It has a bullaun, 13 inches across, ground in it.' This monument consists of an irregular-shaped sandstone boulder (0.75m E-W; 0.8m N-S; max. H 0.65m; min. H 0.25m). It has a triangular-shaped upper surface (0.65m N-S; 0.55m E-W) in plan, which has a steep NW face and a hollow basin offset slightly to NW. The basin (0.32m N-S; 0.30m E-W) is oval in plan and is deeper (max. D 0.2m) at S and becomes shallower (min. D 0.05m) at NW, where there is a gentle lip from the basin to the edge of the stone. At the base of a W-facing slope, in a wet and scrubby oblong depression, immediately E of the Kiltanon River. It is depicted and named as ‘Toberbreedia’ on all OS historic mapping. According to Curry (OSL, vol. 2, 1839, 283), ‘there is another holy well dedicated to St Bridget in the townland of Kiltannon, at which stations still continue to be performed’. This well is not visible at ground level and is likely to have been blocked up. A tree has fallen across this area in recent times. In gently undulating pasture, with reasonable views of the surrounding landscape but overlooked by higher ground to E. A former millrace is located c. 56m to NW. Listed in the RMP (1996) as 'Megalithic Structure' and not depicted on any OS historic mapping. According to Westropp (1902-04, 111), ‘The remains are greatly defaced, and are not marked on the maps. Four stones stand in line, side by side, lying east and west on a low mound, among hawthorns, to the south-east of the outer bridge on the front Avenue [of Kiltannon house]; it is probably the remains of a small dolmen. The blocks measure 4 feet by 30 inches to 24 inches by 7 inches; the second and third are each 4 feet 4 inches wide; other dimensions similar. Another similar slab lies to the west on the slope of the mound, which is 18 feet long’. A conspicuous mound (diam. 4.5m; H 0.7m) at this location appears to be of sod-covered stone and rock outcrop. This equates well with Westropp's description but it is not possible to say if this is a natural outcrop of rock or if it is a collapsed megalithic structure. On top of a low ridge (long axis NE-SW) in pasture, with good views in all directions, particularly to SE. Depicted and named ‘Lisnagleragh’ on all OS historic mapping. A circular area (diam. 32m) defined by a substantial flat-topped earthen bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 2.6m; Wth at top 2m; overall Wth 7.7m). Mature beech trees align the bank with small thorn trees in between. A causewayed entrance (Wth 3m) is located at ESE, being very well defined and potentially faced on the northern side. Intermittent livestock tracks and low gaps are evident elsewhere. The outer fosse (Wth at base 1.6m; overall Wth 2.7m; D 0.2m) is visible E-WSW and is choked with briars for the most part. The interior is level and grass covered. A field boundary (long-axis NE-SW) is located c. 2m to NW. The following images have been uploaded: CL027-027----_01.jpg From NE. View of ringfort after snow. A squared arrangement of moss-covered stones are located at the side of the road at this location. They are arranged three to four courses high in the form of a low square-plan pier. It is of drystone construction and unknown if it is associated with the holy well. A large flat, moss-covered flag is barely visible within the vegetation of the boundary at this point and may be of relevance. There is no obvious well feature at this location and it may have been blocked up. There is no trace of any well feature in the pasture field to E. There is a deposit of medium sized rocks and branches along the interior of the roadside boundary at this location. The following images have been uploaded: CL027-046----_01.jpg From W. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
