Under trees in an area of improved pasture in Ballyvaughan valley. Indicated on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and hachured with the addition of a ‘Cave’ marked within it on the 1916 ed. It was listed as an ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). Westropp (1901, 280) described it as ‘a small levelled fort with a souterrain’. A heavily overgrown roughly circular rath (est. diam. c. 40m) defined to the E by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 5m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 2.4m) with some external facing, but at SSW and SW by a much lower bank (H 0.8m). Elsewhere it is inaccessible because of overgrowth. There is a possible entrance (Wth 2m) at ESE, lined on its W side by a holed orthostat (L 1.4m; H 0.7m). A souterrain (CL005-044002-) lies in the W sector. Hachured and named ‘Ooanknocknagroagh’ on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch map and is indicated and named ‘Umahin Chnoc na gCruach’ on Robinson’s (1997) map. Westropp (1901, 280) referred to it as ‘Ooanknocknagroagh’ and ‘Boenknocknagroagh’ and believed it was levelled. O’Donovan (Comber 1997, 20) gave the Irish form as Uamhainn Chnuic na gCruach and referred to it as ‘effaced’. It was listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A roughly circular cashel (est. diam. c. 40m) defined from S to SW by an overgrown bank of stone (Wth 1.4m; H 0.7-1m). Elsewhere the enclosing element is either absent or too overgrown to access. The cashel wall merges with a field wall at WSW and an overgrown boulder wall of stone (L 3m H 0.9m) runs inside the cashel wall at S. H 1.5m) and by a stone spread from E to WNW (Wth 3.2-4m; H 1m), with an entrance (Wth 2m) at S, that may be original. Outer wall-facing survives at SW, NW and N and inner facing at E. A later wall runs on the line of the cashel wall at E. A cairn (CL005-230----) is located c. 10m SW of the cashel and a no longer discernible enclosure is located c. 120m to the W (CL005-046----). A circular enclosure (est. diam. 32m) defined from WNW to S by a rubble filled wall (Wth 1.8-3m wide; H 0.8-1m) with no clear facing and a possible entrance (Wth 0.9m) at SE. From S-WNW it is enclosed by a more modern wall. Inside the enclosure, there is a possible hut or pen (int. diam. 4m) NE of centre, outlined by stones (H 0.5-0.7m). In pasture, on top of a low rise with a distinct NE-facing slope, having moderate views of a gently undulating landscape and a distant Burren landscape on higher ground NE-S. Referred to locally as a possible cairn. It consists of a linear mound (L 8m NW-SE; Wth 3.5-5m NE-SW; H 0.8m) consisting of small and medium-sized limestones. It is very distinct in profile along its long axis and is sited on the highest point in the immediate vicinity. A ringfort (CL005-047----) is located c. 4m to NW. On a generally level area of very overgrown scrub and woodland. Hachured as a rectangular enclosure on the 1840 OS 6-inch map. A rectangular area (36m NW-SE; 32m NE-SW) defined by a drystone wall (int. H 1.1m; ext. H 1.2-1.5m; T 1.25m). The wall (Wth 2.2m; H 0.4m) has collapsed in places, particularly along the SE side, where it has tumbled inwards along the inside of a much later wall. The later wall (Wth 0.5m) is only a single stone thick and is built quite haphazardly. A small rectangular feature abuts the exterior of the enclosure at the NW end of the NE side. The interior is completely overgrown with hazel scrub and briars and is largely impenetrable, except around the perimeter.
