- CL016-084001: Crannog, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL016-084001-. In marshy pastureland. This crannog, which was discovered in 1964 in an area that appears to a dried-up lake, was described by Ó Riordáin (1966-7, 71; Pl. II 1) as a raised grassed-over circular mound (diam. 18.5m; H c. 1.5m) with some stones visible at a few points along its perimeter. Along the S extent, three spaced wooden posts (diam. 0.1m; H 0.2-0.3m) were probably the remains of a row of piles. A fragment of the upper portion of a rotary quern was found on it a few years earlier and a wooden vessel containing bog butter was also previously found on or near it. Unfortunately, the latter was allowed to dry out and subsequently disintegrated (ibid.). The crannog was not located on a site inspection in May 1999. However, its outline is clearly visible on current aerial imagery (OSi digitalglobe 2011-2013). Ó Riordáin (1966-7, 71) also noted another possible crannog (CL016-084002-) c. 70m to its E. According to Ó Riordáin (1966-7, 71), this possible crannog was located c. 70m to the E of another crannog (CL016-084001-). It consisted of a raised mound (diam. 24.5m; H c. 2m) that was overgrown with briars and other vegetation. On a SW-facing slope in coarse pasture, immediately to the S of a public road and overlooked by higher ground to the WSW and ENE. Named ‘Kiltoraght Church (in ruins)’ on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. It is recorded as being ‘ruyned’ by 1615 and was systematically removed by the local authority around 1900 (Swinfen 1992, 88). According to Westropp (1900-02, 138), it was a parish church that was known locally as ‘Kiltorachtagh’. All that now survives are the grassed-over foundations of a rectangular building (c. 14m NW-SE; 5.6m NE-SW; H c. 0.2m) defined by grassed-over stone and earthen banks (Wth 1.4m). An internal wall subdivides it, with a smaller room (5.6m N-S; c. 4m E-W) to the NW. A narrow gap in the SE side may mark a doorway. Grass-over rubble to the NE may be associated with it. On low-lying partly cleared and drained boggy pasture overlooked by hillock to the N and S. Hachured as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 19m) on the 1842 edition of the OS 6-inch map. No located on inspection in May 1999 and aerial imagery suggests that that it has been levelled. However, its outline is clearly visible on Aerial Premium (2013-2018) imagery. Near the E-facing slope of a reclaimed E-W running ridge in an area of otherwise undrained marshy pasture, overlooked by high ground to the W but with good views otherwise. Limestone erratics are visible in nearby fields to the E and S and an old dish-shaped quarry is located downhill to the S. Hachured as a roughly subcircular enclosure on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. On the 1916 ed., it is depicted as being more rectangular in plan and a line of hachures indicate its S, W and N sides. A subrectangular enclosure (29.5m N-S; 28.2m E-W crest to crest) defined along the S and W sides by a low earthen bank (Wth 3m at base; H 0.7m), which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.6m) along the N side. No visible trace of the E side survives. A low wide earthen mound (Wth 3m; H 0.2m) extends off the E end of the N side and runs downhill to the N, it may be an old field boundary. Current aerial imagery (OSi digitalglobe 2011-2013) shows another field boundary extending off the E end of the S side; it runs SW-NE (L c. 82m) and then veers towards the SW. There are two wide gaps in the bank on the W side, one to the S (Wth 2.8m) and one to the N (Wth 2.1m). Two cattle gaps are visible in the S side. The interior slopes to the N and near its centre there is an enormous limestone boulder, now piled with field-clearance rubble on top of and around it. A low grassed-over and collapsed stone wall extends from it to the S side of the enclosure. A disused and grass-covered pit lies c. 26m to the S.
- CL016-178: Barrow - ring-barrow, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL016-178----. At the base of a W-facing slope, in improved rough pasture, immediately SE of a stream with moderate views to W, N and E, and obscured by a forestry plantation to S. This monument was identified on Bing satellite imagery (https://binged.it/2qT1TAO, taken in 2012 and accessed on 6 June 2017). It consists of a circular area (18m N-S; 17m E-W) defined by a fosse (basal Wth 3m; overall Wth 7m; D 0.2m) N-WSW. There is a very wide intervening berm (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.1m; Wth at top 5.5m; overall Wth 9.55m) ENE-SW of which there is a faint trace N-E. An outer fosse (basal Wth 2.8m; overall Wth 5.2m; D 0.15m) is present NE-SW. The enclosing elements are largely levelled SW-NW, however it is clear from the Bing and Google satellite photographs that they continued in a full circle with the outer fosse directly abutting the stream to NW (max. overall diam. 61m). The outer enclosing elements of the monument appear to have been disturbed across the NE sector by a field boundary (long-axis NW-SE) which is depicted on all OS historic mapping. There is a causewayed entrance (Wth at top 3.5m; overall Wth 5m; L 21m) at ESE, which extends across the inner fosse to the intervening berm and appears to have been disturbed in the vicinity of the outer fosse, where it is difficult to trace. The interior is generally level and there is a slight depression in the NE sector. Kiltoraght church (CL016-086001-) lies 120m to the NE.
