In a slight hollow in high SE-sloping pastureland, with limited views except from E to SE. Hachured and named ‘Lissaun’ on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Indicated as a cairn and named ‘Liosán’ on Robinson’s (1977) map. Described by Westropp (1896, 366) as ‘a small cairn “Lishaun” over-looking the narrow and cliff-girt Lough Avalla’ and listed as ‘Cairn’ in the RMP (1996). This small suboval cashel (int. dims. 22m N-S; 16.7m E-W; ext. dims. 29m N-S; 24m E-W) is defined by a stony bank or tumbled wall (Wth 2.8-3.5m; int. H 0.5-1.4m; max. ext. H 1.3m) which is most evident at the N and S. This enclosing element is cut into the hillslope at SW-NE, resulting in a greater internal height (2.3m) for the bank/wall along this part of the perimeter. The interior is mostly flat. Grass-covered field walls radiate from the cashel at the NNE and SE. The following images havae been uploaded: CL010-072----_01.jpg Aerial view from SE CL010-072----_02.jpg Aerial view from SSE Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 23 May 2023 - CL010-073: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL010-073----. In elevated semi-karst pastureland, with wide views from SE to SW and a cliff-face c. 107m to the NE rising up to the Slievenaglasha heights. Hachured on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Indicated and named ‘Cahermore’ on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Marked and labelled ‘Cathair Mhór – double fort’ on Robinson’s (1977) map. This well-built subcircular bivallate cashel (int. dims. 28m E-W; 24.8m N-S) is defined by two concentric walls, with traces also of a possibly contemporary outer bank. The double-faced inner wall (Wth 2.6-4.15m; int. H 1.7-1.9m; ext. H 2.3-3.1m) is finely constructed of well-cut masonry blocks, with hammer-dressing observed on some blocks by Westropp (1913, 247). This wall is best preserved from NNW to NNE and from SSE to W. The outer wall-face is battered. Much of the wall’s core has been robbed, but there are traces of a terrace (Wth c. 1.5m; H c. 1m) along the E side of the inner wall-face. Westropp (1896, 366) appears to have found this terrace (Wth 0.55-1.22m; max. H 1.22m) surviving around more of the wall circuit. Running outside and parallel to the inner wall at a distance of 6.5-8.5m, the less well-preserved outer wall (diam. c. 55m E-W; c. 50m N-S; Wth 1.9-2.4m; int. H 0.3-0.8m; ext. H 0.3-0.9m) retains traces of its outer face at the N and S. A later field wall is built over the outer wall from NE to N, and an animal pen is built in the space between the inner and outer walls. Running parallel to and outside this outer wall at a distance of c. 11m is a grass-covered concentric bank (est. Wth c. 3m), which is most clearly visible from S to W on the OSi MapGenie orthophotography (2013-2018). Between the outer wall and this outer bank there are partly grass-covered traces of three/four radial walls, at the NE, SE, S and W. The entrance to the cashel does not survive. Westropp (ibid.) described it as being situated at the SE, and damaged but with its lintel (L 1.8m) still visible. The former location of the entrance (also indicated on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map) is suggested by a stone-lined trackway running SE from this side of the inner wall. There is a souterrain (CL010-073002-) in the W of the slightly uneven interior. There are two nearby fulachtaí fia: one (CL010-150----) c. 50m to the SSE and the other (CL010-151----) c. 140m to the SE. Situated in the interior of Cahermore cashel (CL010-073----). Indicated by a small rectangle in the N centre of the cashel on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, with the label ‘Cave’. This souterrain was described by Westropp (1896, 366) as orientated NW-SE, and located in the NW interior of the cashel, c. 3.66m from the wall. No clear traces of the souterrain were found during an inspection in 1999, but a low grassy hummock in the W interior of the cashel was noted as a possible archaeological feature. In a slight hollow, deepening toward the E. Recorded on the first edition (1842) of the OS 6-inch map as an L-shaped structure (L c. 12m E-W; L c. 10m N-S) and labelled ‘Castle in ruins’. Labelled ‘Castle (site of)’ on the OS 25-inch plan (1897) and on the Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Castle (site)’ in the RMP (1996). There is little historical information about this castle, which may have been a residence of the O’Brien family (Ua Cróinín and Breen 1997). No visible surface remains survive. There is a small network (51m E-W; c. 30m N-S) of stone walls at this location, which may have formed part of the castle complex. Within this network there are two small rectangular structures: one (int. dims. 3.5m E-W; 3.3m N-S) at the S defined by a stone wall (Wth c. 1m; H 0.3m); and another (int. dims. 7m NNE-SSW; 4.3m WNW-ESE) at the N defined by a double-faced stone wall/bank (Wth 1m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.1m), with a WNW-ESE running internal partition wall near the NNE end. A later trackway runs N-S immediately to the W of these structures. In the adjacent field to the E, c. 20m from these structures, is an L-shaped feature (12m NW-SE; 6m NE-SW) defined by a stone bank (Wth 2m; H 1m). Ua Cróinín and Breen (1997) noted several possibly related architectural fragments (hammer-dressed stones) in the out-buildings of some nearby farms.
