Moland’s map of Ennis (1703) shows a bridge crossing the River Fergus on the site of the present Club Bridge. Ó Dálaigh (1987, 14) suggests that since there is no mention of the bridge in either Brigdall’s or Dineley’s accounts in the 1680s it must have been erected subsequently. This bridge opened up the friary precinct to through traffic and connected the urban district with the townland of Lifford on the N bank of the Fergus. The bridge allowed the old river crossing at Clonroad (CL033-085003-) to be bypassed and facilitated traffic from Galway and north Clare entering the town. (Ó Dálaigh 2012, 5). It was demolished in 1835 (Bradley, Halpin and King 1988, 54). The present bridge is named ‘St. Connell’s Abbey Bridge’ on an Ordnance Survey town plan of 1841, ‘New Bridge’ on an estate map of 1842, and ‘Ennis Bridge’ on a drainage and navigation map of the Fergus district in 1848 (maps, Ó Dálaigh 2012). One of two stone bridges depicted on a 17th-century drawing by Thomas Dineley (1681) across the river Fergus immediately N of Clonroad Castle (CL033-084001-). In the drawing, this more westerly bridge linked the arched entrance to the bawn with the N side of the river. It was built at an existing fording point, facilitated by a shelf of flat limestone outcrop that provided a firm footing. This still exists under the modern bridge. The more easterly of two bridges depicted on a 17th-century drawing by Thomas Dineley (1681) across the river Fergus immediately adjacent to Clonroad Castle (CL033-084001-). In the drawing the bridge is of stone with four arches linking the castle with further settlement on the N bank. The location has been plotted in relation to what is shown on the drawing. Detached irregular-plan multiple-bay three-storey building of three periods, commenced c. 1780. Originally built as house, later used as clubhouse. Comprising three-bay three-storey main block with adjoining two-bay three-storey block, having wing set at right angle to main elevation, and with mid nineteenth century bow-fronted extension to river side elevation. Pitched and hipped slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with string course and quoins. Heavy cornice and frieze around bow fronted extension. Entrance porch to main block comprising Ionic columns set in chamfered corners with broken pediment above. Pair of bay windows to river elevation. Timber sliding sash and some replacement aluminium windows. Retaining interior features.

Steeply pitched roof with four large rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with decorative pediment additions added to ground floor by Edward F. Ryan in 1941. Square-headed openings and pair of round-headed openings over entrance door, all with timber sliding sash windows. Round-head door opening flanked by sidelights and approached by flight of steps. Retaining interior features. Octagonal-profile gate piers support simple wrought-iron gates and railing. Carefully sited closing vista of College Road.

Freestanding multiple-bay two-storey over basement courthouse built 1846-50 to competition-winning designs (1845) by Henry Whitestone (1819-93). Comprising pedimented Ionic hexastyle portico approached by nine steps and surrounded by balustrade, flanked by three-bay blocks with advanced end bays. Hipped slate roofs. Cyclopean rusticated limestone to basement. Cut-limestone to remaining floors with carved cornices, frieze, capitals and pediment. Centrally placed main entrance with carved limestone bracketed cornice and architrave. Side entrances with carved limestone pediments. Carved limestone pediments and lintels with scrolls over end bay openings. Timber sliding sash windows. Interior features include marble statue of Michael O'Loghlen (1789-1842), Master of Rolls in Ireland, by Joseph Robinson Kirk RHA (1820-94). Single-storey extension faced in machine-cut stone designed by Dermot and Sean Merry Architects. Occupying imposing site on a slight rise with terrace in front, park below, and gun from Crimean War to left.
