At the W end of a broad E-W hill in pasture within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-), with land falling away S-N and wide views all around (less to E). Hachured and named ‘Carn’ on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Described by Westropp (1901, 289) as a conspicuous and fairly perfect cairn of earth and stones. This circular cairn (10.1m E-W; 10m N-S; H 1.4-1.6m) has quite a flat top (diam. 3-4m), near which some large stones (though not kerbstones) protrude through the sod. Other cashels lie c. 136m to the S (CL009-059030-) and c. 152m to the ENE (CL009-059031-). The following image has been uploaded: CL009-059029-_01.jpg View from ENE Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 7 February 2022 - CL009-059030: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL009-059030-. Near the top of a S-facing slope, with slope increasing immediately to S, in pasture within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). Indicated on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This circular cashel (24.5m ENE-WSW; 24m NNW-SSE) is defined by the grass- and moss-covered remains of a double-faced wall (Wth 3m at NNW-N; int. H 0.4-1.3m; ext. H 0.4-0.6m) on which is built a later drystone wall (Wth 0.6-0.7m; H 1-1.5m). The cashel’s outer wall-face is highest at SSW-NE, its large stones (max. L 1m; H 0.2m) are laid horizontally and a vertical break is visible at NW. Rubble from the wall covers the lower part of its inner and outer faces (total Wth 6-7m) around most of the perimeter. An entrance (Wth 0.6m) at ENE may be original. Westropp (1909, 23) may have found a ‘lintelled gateway’ here. Three contiguous stone cells (individual dims. L 2.6-3.2m; Wth 1.6-2.4m) of probable later date are built into the external wall-face at N-ENE, and are themselves defined by low walls (Wth c. 0.5-1m; H c. 0.5m). A cashel (CL009-203001-) lies c. 95m to the SW and a cairn (CL009-059029-) lies c. 136m to the N. On a gentle S-facing slope, with land immediately to the S sloping steeply into a shallow E-W valley. In rough pasture, briars and blackthorn, and within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). This large rectangular cashel (int. dims. 60m E-W; 34m N-S) is defined by a collapsed stone wall (Wth 4-5m; int. H 0.8-1m; ext. H 0.8-1m). The outer wall-face is visible at the NW corner, where there is a line of large upright slabs (each L 1m; H 1m; T 0.25m). At the NE edge of the interior there is a souterrain (CL009-203002-). Throughout the interior there are also several later features defined by drystone wall remnants (Wth 0.6-1.2m; H c. 0.6m), including a rectangular house site (int. dims. 5.3m E-W; 5m N-S) in the SW corner. Another cashel (CL009-059030-) lies c. 95m to the NE. Situated in the NE interior of a cashel (CL009-203002-). An L-shaped souterrain (L c. 10.5m) incorporating an unroofed straight E-W section (L 4.5m; Wth 0.9m; D 0.5m) at the E end of which the passage turns N for at least 5m, roofed with stone lintels. There is an opening (Wth 0.45m; H 0.3m; roof lintel Wth 1m; T 0.25m) at the S end of the roofed section. To the S of the summit of an E-W karst ridge in reclaimed pasture, with field banks removed. Hachured and named ‘Lisket’ on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Described by Westropp (1915, 264) as ‘an earthen fort 135 feet across’ with a platform ‘105 feet across’ with ‘a rampart rarely a foot high, giving the garth a slightly cupped appearance’ and a fosse ‘about 14 feet wide, the platform rising 5 feet above it’. A raised circular platform (dims. 30.3m E-W; 29.4m N-S; H 1-1.5) defined NW to NE and at S by traces of an earthen bank (at N: Wth 6m; H 0.2m). A ledge (Wth c. 1.5m) has been cut around the perimeter of the mound from E to SW and may be recent. A flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 1.5–3.7m; D 0.3-1m) extends all around. An outer bank is visible from SE to W (Wth 0.9-c. 2.5m; H 0.2-0.3m). Gaps occur at NE (Wth 2.4m) and at ESE (Wth 2.2m) but it is unclear if these are original. There is some evidence of disturbance in the fosse from NW to NE and at NW it has been infilled with stones (Wth 4.1m) to facilitate access. At the outer edge of the fosse at W, stones and the mostly removed foundations of a later wall are visible (L 9m). This is visible on Google Earth (imagery date 14 September 2009) and on OSi MapGenie (2013-2018) as a larger enclosure extending further to the S (c. 40m N-S) defined by a low bank and bisected by an E-W field boundary.
