In dense hazel wood and low thorn on karst pavement at the SW foot of very low (50’) hillock, on the townland boundary between Lisnanard and Newtown. Hachured on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and indicated by a solid line as a circular feature (diam. c. 20m) on the 1915 ed. The hazel cover makes it very difficult to navigate and it proved impossible to locate on inspection in 1997. It is discernible on recent satellite imagery as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) apparently defined by a low stone wall. Field walls radiate from it to the WNW and SSW. The wall extending SSW follows the line of the townland boundary. The site of a larger (diam. c. 60m) enclosure (CL002-045----) lies c. 180m to the WSW. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 9 December 2020 - CL002-047: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL002-047----. On the crest of a low but moderately steep-sided E-facing rise, under dense thorn cover. Hachured on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, named ‘Lisnanard’ on the 1915 ed. and named ‘Lios na nArd’ on Robinson’s (1977) map. It is likely the feature from which the townland derived its name. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A very poorly preserved and difficult to access oval cashel (int. dims. 43m N–S; 39m E–W) defined by a low bank (Wth 5–6.8m; H 0.8–1.1m) of collapsed walling with no obvious facing-stones or entrance visible. Later collapsed field walls run E–W across the N of the interior and N–S across the W of the interior. Ballyvaghan forts, two raths (CL002-050---- and CL002-052----) and an enclosure (CL002-054----) are in a cluster c. 450m to the E. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 9 December 2020 - CL002-055: Quay, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL002-055----. Marked faintly as a D-shaped feature (c. 35m N-S: c. 30m E-W) attached to the E side of the N-S road from Ballyvaghan to Black Head and described in italic lettering as 'Ballyvaghan Quay' on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated on the sea-shore, and undoubtedly served as a quay for Ballyvaghan before a SW-NE quay wall (L c. 120m) was built c. 20m to the NW. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 9 April, 2013 - CL002-073: Gateway, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL002-073----. On heavily overgrown and undulating wet pastureland. A trapezoidal gateway (2.61m NE–SW at NW; 2.41m NE–SW at SE; 1.8m SE–NW; H 2.4m), open to the NW and giving access from SE to NW. Built of randomly coursed limestone and mortar, with stressed quoins. The doorway (H 1.82m; Wth 0.94m) is spanned by 7 or 8 lintels (combined H 0.6m), which are in turn capped by rubble (H 0.26m). The original height is unclear. Remnants of a string course and a small low plinth at ground level survive on the SE face. Two opposing recesses are located on each internal side of the NW projecting walls (Wth 0.14–0.46m; H 0.2–0.4m; D 0.16–0.46m). Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 14 December 2020 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Lisnanard. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Lisnanard, about 1 in 5 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
