In hazel wood and pasture at the edge of a plateau sloping gently to the S. Indicated on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Westropp (1911, 361) described this as ‘a very coarse and badly built’ caher and noted a low narrow terrace (H 0.54m; Wth 0.48m) on the inside of the wall. The cashel (diam. c. 30m), roughly circular in plan, is now defined by a much-collapsed stone wall. The outer wall-face (int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.8-2m) survives virtually all the way around. It rises above the stone spread (Wth 2-4m; int. H 0.5-0.8m) immediately inside it. This spread probably incorporates the terrace noted by Westropp. A ‘defaced gateway’ also recorded by Westropp (ibid.) was not visible; its small lintel (L 1.22m; Wth 0.46m; H 0.2m) suggested that it was a narrow entranceway. The interior is completely overgrown with hazel. Two other cashels (CL009-114---- and CL009-116----) lie c. 95m to the SW and c. 105m to the N respectively. Compiled by: Olive Alcock and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 14 June 2022 - CL009-116: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL009-116----. In hazel wood and pasture at the edge of a plateau that slopes gently to the E and S. Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Described by Westropp (1911, 361) as a coarsely built fort with a terraced wall; an internal flight of steps rose from a recess in the terrace platform. At E a lintelled gateway and associated passage had been ‘recently overthrown’ but on the basis of the remains, Westropp (ibid., 360, fig. 5) based a plan and elevation. This subcircular cashel (ext. dims. c. 33.5m NE-SW) is now defined mainly by a stone spread (Wth c. 6m; int. H 0.4-1m; ext. H 0.2-1.2m) but the original wall (Wth 2m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.6-2.4m) is best preserved at N. The stone spread probably marks the level of the terrace. The outer wall skin survives virtually all the way round and rises up to 0.8m above the stone spread. A later drystone wall overlies it from NW to NE. The S side of the entrance is clearly visible at E but the N side is not as well defined and is obscured by tumble. Two fallen lintels are visible in the passageway. The flight of steps noted by Westropp (ibid.) was not visible. The interior of cashel was completely overgrown with hazel and blackthorn bushes and there was also heavy growth on the enclosing wall from N to E to S; the W half was clear. Two other cashels (CL009-0117---- and CL009-115----) lie c. 140m to the NE and c. 105m to the SSW respectively. Visible on an aerial photograph (GSIAP R 12/11). On inspection in 1997 this was found to be a subcircular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) defined by a modern drystone wall. On inspection in 1997 this was found to be a small, oval field defined by a drystone wall (H c. 1m) of modern construction. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
