On a gentle to moderately steep SW-facing slope under pasture. Overlooked by a graveyard c. 100m to the NE (CL003-011----) beyond which a second ringfort stands (CL003-013----). Hachured and named ‘Mortyclogh fort’ on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps and named ‘Lios Mothair Tí Cloch’ on Robinson’s 1977 map. The word mothair is a local toponym used to denote a square or rectangular fort. A well preserved sub-circular ringfort (int. dims. 53.4m E–W from inner facing-stone at W to crest of bank at E; 50.7m N–S face to face) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.2–9m from inner base to fosse base; H 1–2m) and external fosse (D 0.8–1m from base to external crest). The top of the bank is generally narrow (Wth 0.3–1.7m) and rounded. It has inner facing-stones visible from E–S and sporadically elsewhere, except from W–N, where the bank has slipped. A stone-faced entrance gap (Wth 3.7m) occurs just E of S but there is no visible sign of a corresponding causeway across the fosse, the remains of which were likely erased by tractors using the fosse as a passage around the site, from ESE–SW. Modern up-and-over cattle gaps partially cut the bank at W, NW and NNE (Wth 0.6–1m). The interior slopes down from NNE to SSW (falling 1.2m) and contains an inaccessible souterrain (CL003-009002-) c. 18m NE of centre. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 15 December 2020 - CL003-009002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL003-009002-. In the interior of a large subcircular ringfort (CL003-009----), c. 18m NE of centre. Indicated and named ‘cave’ on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map but not indicated on the 1915 ed. It is now inaccessible and all that can be discerned is a lintel (traceable Wth 0.9m; T 0.2m; depth of sod cover above 0.2–0.3m) resting on drystone-walling, spanning an ope (Wth 0.8m). The area under the lintel is filled with clay leaving a gap of 0.25m between the top of the fill and the underside of the lintel. A passage (est. L 4m) runs NNE and a shallow depression runs SSW (L c. 1m). In Westropp’s time the souterrain was accessible and he recorded it as ’34 feet 6 inches (10.52m) long, 4 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 5 inches (1.47–1.96m) wide inside, and 2 feet 10 inches (0.86m) at the entrance and 6 feet (1.83m) inside…. [and as having]… a projecting cornice and 12 lintels from 8 inches to 1 foot (0.2–0.3m) thick, and from 21 to 39 inches (0.53–0.99m) wide. [He also recorded] a shallow side recess 1 foot and 4 inches (0.41m) deep and 4 feet 6 inches (1.37m) long [and] a space 2 feet 6 inches (0.76m) deep… [that opened] at the end under the roof, but… [did] not seem to be a passage’ (Westropp 1911, 353). On the west end of a low E–W ridge with excellent views in all directions and overlooking a ringfort (CL003-009----) to the SW and the site of another (CL003-013----) to the NE. Indicated and named ‘Killeen Grave Yard’ on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. A roughly trapezoidal area (45m E–W; 20.5m N–S at E; 8m N–S at W) enclosed by a stone wall (H 1.2m at int. of W wall; H 1.9m at ext. of W wall), accessed through a gate in the W wall, from which the interior is crossed by a concrete path. There is a uniform concentration of burials, except at the west end where there are no obvious markers. The burials are marked by inscribed headstones, both fallen and upright. The earliest legible grave is of a young girl aged two years and three months dated to 1856. A small now practically illegible plaque set on the outside base of the W wall is dated to 1813. The graveyard continues to be used today. When surveyed in 1997, it had recently been cleaned up as part of a local community project. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 15 December 2020 - CL003-013: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL003-013----. On a very slight E-facing slope just off the crest at the E end of low E–W ridge, in good quality mixed pasture and meadowland. Hachured and named ‘Caher of Mortyclogh’, with a cave indicated in the interior, on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps and named ‘Móthair Tí Clogh’ on Robinson’s (1977) map. A very poorly preserved subcircular cashel (est. int. dims. 44.3m N–S; 43.8m E–W) defined by a low grassed-over stone spread (max. H 0.8m; max. Wth 6m) which is reduced to a scarp over the exterior ENE–SSE and to a scarp over the interior WSW–NW. A single course of inner facing-stones forms an arc (L 4m) at N and a second arc (L 4m) of more substantial outer facing-stones (H 0.6m) survives at NW. The interior contains an accessible souterrain (CL003-013002-) and the ruins of a rectangular building (CL003-013003-). A later field wall overlies the N limits, roughly on the line of the inner cashel wall-face. A graveyard is located c. 100m to the WSW (CL003-011----) and a ringfort (not visible) lies c. 250m to the SW (CL003-009----). The name ‘Mothair’ (a local toponym for square ringforts) may refer to the original shape of this fort, or, as Westropp (1911, 352) tells us was locally believed, to ‘Mortough garbh O’Brien’ who, in 1317, fell in battle nearby. The second part of the name likely refers to the stone house (CL003-013003-) in the interior. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 15 December 2020 - CL003-013002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL003-013002-. Within the NE quadrant of a cashel (CL003-013001-). Indicated and named ‘cave’ on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. A souterrain comprising a stone-lined and lintelled chamber (8.75m ENE–WSW; 1.95m NNW–SSE; H 1.6m) with a rounded WSW end and clay floor. A square ope defined by two jambstones and a lintel (0.75m by 0.75m) near the WSW end of the chamber leads off towards the SSE into a creep (traceable L 2.6m; Wth 0.8m). Its S end is filled to roof level with clay and it may have led to another chamber. This may be the chamber reported by Cooke (1851, 297). The current entrance is at the ENE end of the chamber (1.2m) where a lintel has been displaced; this may be an original entrance or a creep. In Cooke’s time, two chambers connected by a creep were accessible. The second was of similar dimension to the first and ran perpendicular. He also reported the find of a ‘fairy millstone’, a round stone an inch and a half in diameter. He did not note whether it was perforated, but it is likely to have been a spindle whorl. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 15 December 2020 - CL003-013003: House - indeterminate date, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL003-013003-. In the NE quadrant of a cashel (CL003-013001-). A rectangular NW–SE orientated building defined by a largely grass-covered stony bank (Wth 2m; H 0.4m), which is traceable for 10m NW–SE and 5m NE–SW. Occasional wall-facing is visible on its SW side. This is likely to be the ‘Tí Clogh’ (stone house) referred to in the name of the cashel and townland (‘Mortyclogh/Mothair Tí Clogh’) in which it lies.
