On a rise in a S-facing slope at the edge of a plateau, overlooking the W end of the Kilcorney Valley, in an area of rough pasture and hazel cover, and within a multiperiod field system (CL009-255---). Labelled ‘Carn’ on the Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. An oval cairn (diams. 11.8m E–W; 9m N–S; H 0.4–1.3m), the N edge of which is indistinct. There are two quarry holes adjacent to the cairn; one to the W (dims. 3.4m N–S; 2.4m E–W) and a second to the E (diam. c. 2m). As well as a wedge tomb (CL009-020001-) c. 50 to N, there are two cairns nearby: one (CL009-145003-) lies c. 160m to ENE and another (CL009-145----) c. 160m to NE. These is a pronounced concentration of cairns in the area, as noted by Westropp (1899, 370) and Grant (2010, 46). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 30-9-2025 - CL009-023: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL009-023----. At the S edge of a plateau, overlooking the W end of the Kilcorney Valley, within a multiperiod field system (CL009-255---). Depicted as a circular enclosure named ‘Liscolmanbara’ on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map; a N-S running field boundary clipped its E limits. Indicated and named ‘Lios Colmáin Bháire’ on Robinson’s map (1977). Only the basal course of the fern and grass-covered wall (Wth at N 1.8m; H 0.2–1.1m) of this cashel, which is defined by a D-shaped platform (28.3m E–W; 28m N–S), survives. The outer wall-face is visible all round and is best preserved from S to WSW. The inner wall-face is not clear and is generally flush with the interior. A later drystone wall has been built over the outer wall-face from WSW to NE. The field boundary shown on the 1842 ed. of the OS map to the E is still extant. Grass-covered mound walls abut it at N and SW. According to a local tradition recorded in 1839 by John O’Donovan, Ordnance Survey Letters (Comber 1997, 76), the name of the cashel derives from St Colman Baire who lived here, while a low mound (CL009-024----) c. 280m to the SSE was believed to mark the remains of a church dedicated to him (ibid.). Compiled by: Olive Alcock and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 17 December 2021 - CL009-024: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL009-024----. On level ground in pasture near W end of the Kilcorney Valley, overlooked by higher ground all around. Named ‘Site of Kilcolmanvara Church’ on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. On the OS 25-inch plan (1897), the symbol for ‘Site of’ is shown within a rectangular area (c. 11.8m NE-SW; c. 7.5m NW-SE) defined by a broken line. The Ordnance Survey Letters (Comber 1997, 76) note that it was traditionally believed that this was the site of the oldest church in Kilcorney and that it was dedicated to St Colman Baire. The saint was believed to have lived in the nearby cashel (CL009-023----), c. 280m to the NNW (ibid.). The church has been levelled and all that survive is a low subrectangular cairn (c. 16m NE–SW; c. 8m NW–SE; H c. 1m) covered in reeds. On level ground in rough pasture, with a field wall immediately to the W and within a multiperiod field system (CL009-255---). A small, subcircular, flat-topped cairn (5m E-W; 4.2m N-S; max. H 0.5m) composed of medium/large stones (diam. c. 0.25m). A cairn (CL009-145----) lies c. 32m to the NNW. On a broad plateau in rough pasture, with a NNE-SSW ravine c. 50m to the E. Within a multiperiod field system (CL009-255---). This circular burial cairn (10.4m N-S; 9.5m E-W; max. H c. 1m at SE) is composed of limestone rocks. Just NW of the centre there is a cist (CL009-200002-). A curving line of six non-contiguous kerbstones (av. dims. L c. 0.4m; H 0.25-0.35m) borders the E side of the cist at a distance of 0.85-1.2m. If continued around the W side of the cist, this line of stones would form an oval kerb (est. diam. c. 3.6-4m). In the N part of the cairn there is a line (L 2.1m) of small upright flagstones, perhaps lodged in a gryke. Situated in the NW centre of a burial cairn (CL009-200001-), this cist (int. dims. 1.2m N-S; 1m E-W) is oriented roughly N-S. It is lined by two upright limestone flags set as sidestones (L c. 0.6m; H 0.4-0.62m; T 0.08m) on the E, one (L 0.48m; H 0.66m; T 0.06m) on the W, and a large endstone (L 1.4m; H 0.45m; T 0.12m) on the S. The space between these stones is packed with horizontally laid slabs, over which are accumulated smaller cairn stones. A curving line of six non-contiguous kerbstones (av. dims. L c. 0.4m; H 0.25-0.35m) borders the E side of the cist at a distance of 0.85-1.2m.
