On a gentle N-facing slope overlooking Aughinish Bay to the N. Indicated with a dashed line and named ‘Gardeenrossalia’ on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map with the addition of ‘Burial Ground (Disused)’ on the 1915 ed. A small village (of c. 20 houses) is indicated in the fields to the E on the 1842 ed., but this was no longer in existence by the 1915 ed. Listed as ‘Burial Ground’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A largely unenclosed rectangular area (L 14.2m E–W; 13m N–S) defined by small unmarked headstones (fieldstones and some small flags) some of which occur in N–S lines. The S end is defined by a folly-like structure: a thick rubble wall (L 12.6m; Wth 3.8m; H 3m) faced with unworked mortared stone, partially collapsed on its S and W sides and ivy covered on its upper surface. A wall (L 2m; Wth 1.6m; H 0.6m) runs perpendicularly northwards off the large thick wall. This may be the remains of a destroyed or never-finished wall intended to enclose the burial ground. A holy well dedicated to St Patrick is located c. 300m to the SSE. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 15 December 2020 - CL003-021001: Ritual site - holy well, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL003-021001-. On a narrow terrace on the NE face of Abbey Hill with panoramic views to the N. A natural spring emerges from low bedrock terracing and is enclosed by a mortared stone wall (Wth 0.6m; H 1m over the interior) enclosing an area (L 1.6m; Wth 1.5m) with a blocked entrance at NW and an alcove at the NW corner containing votive offerings. The interior face of some of the structural stones bear carvings, inscriptions and graffiti. The largest stone bears 'rock scribing - folk art' in the form of a carved human figure (CL003-021007-). This was reported by Nick Geh who also noted 19th-century graffiti on this slab and on two others. On this slab there is a harp with 'God save Ireland' with the year 1867 as well as the name 'W Williamson, Curranrue, August 3rd 1867'. One of the other slabs bears a Latin inscription 'Libertas et natale solum' with berries and leaves to left and right and a third slab reads 'M. Byrne RIC. AD 1916, Kinvara'. Immediately NE of the well is a subrectangular enclosure (L 13.5m; Wth 5m) defined by a mixture of drystone and mortared stone walling. The foundations of a structure (CL003-021006-) lie c. 10m to the E. A leacht cuimhne or memorial to the Comyn family (CL003-021004-) lies c. 30 to the NNW and it bears a similar carved human face (CL003-021005-) to that within the well (CL003-021007-). According to Coffey (1995, 16-17) the rock scribing at the well was originally part of the leacht. Listed as ‘Fulacht fiadh’ in the SMR (1992) and as ‘Fulachta Fiadh’ in the RMP (1996). Coffey (1995, 16-17) says that the the Comyn memorial (CL002-021004-) is set on a fulacht fia. On inspection in 1997 this was found to be a small mound (diam. c. 2m; H 0.2-0.3m). There is no trace of any fulachta fia at this location. A subrectangular mortared stone structure (L 1.6m; Wth 1.5m; H 1.6m) with an inscribed plaque and a carving of a moonlike face (CL003-021005-) on the E side. According to Westropp (1893-4) the memorial plaque (0.4m x 0.5m) reads 'O LORD IHSVS CHRIST HAVE MERCY ON US PRAY FOR THE SOVLES OF IOHN CORNYN AND HIS WIFE MARY M'NEMARA 1750'. The letters are conjoined capitals in false relief. According to Coffey (1995, 16-17) this is a memorial to the Comyn family and a stone head from it was removed to the holy well (CL003-021001-) c. 20m to the SE. The structure stands on a circular rough stone plinth which projects c. 0.5m from each side of the monument. Spellissy (1987, 163) and Coffey (1995, 16) imply that this memorial is built on a fulacht fia (CL003-021003-) but on inspection in 1997 this was found to be a low grassed-over area of spoil (Wth 2m; H 0.3-0.4m) visible around the monument from NW to SE.
