On a bedrock knoll at the S edge of a plateau, commanding wide views from SE to W, with adjacent land also dipping to the W and E. Hachured as a roughly oval enclosure on the OS 25-inch plan (1897) and 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map; a disused limekiln is shown at its base at S on the 25-inch plan. This rath (int. dims. c. 33m NW-SE; c. 27m NE-SW; ext. dims. 46m NW-SE; 38m NE-SW) is defined by a scarp (original H c. 2m; Wth c. 5m). There are traces of a very low bank (max. H 0.2-0.3m) around the top of the scarp almost everywhere, except between E and SE; at S it is set slightly back from the scarp edge. There are later ramp entrances at SE (Wth 2.3m) and NW (Wth 3.5m; L 6m). The raised interior is quite level and featureless, apart from a shallow ditch (base Wth 1m; Wth at top 3.5m; D 0.2-0.4m) and associated spoil mound (Wth c. 3.5m; H 0.5m), which extend from the centre to the E edge of the scarp. These are later features. The rath is heavily poached and the scarp and bank have been truncated in various places: by farm buildings to the E and a modern trackway that skirts around it from SE to NW. A castle (CL009-096002-) may be associated. The following image has been uploaded: CL009-096001-_01.jpg View from W Compiled by: Olive Alcock and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 25 May 2022 - CL009-096002: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL009-096002-. This castle is indicated by a cross - the symbol for ‘site of’ - in the NW half of the interior of a rath (CL009-096001-) on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and it is labelled ‘Roughan Castle (Supposed Site of)’ on the latter map. A castle is listed in Roughan in 1574 when it was in the ownership of an O’Loughlin (Ua Cróinín and Breen 1997). Westropp (1915, 256) was ‘inclined to accept’ a local account of the rath being the site of the ‘Castle of Roughan’ as ‘there seems to have been one in the townland’. However, there is absolutely no visible trace of it in the rath and most of its interior remains undisturbed. The abandoned 18th/19th-century farmhouse immediately to its E incorporates ‘much cut and dressed limestone blocks’ (Ua Cróinín and Breen 1997). A blocked doorway bears a lintel (Wth 1.08m; H 0.43m; front face H 0.13m; receding face T 0.2m) consisting of a single piece of dressed limestone finished to form a flat elliptical arch (Wth 0.86m) with a chamfered edge (Wth 0.06m). Another stone (Wth 0.47m; H 0.19m) at the base of this doorway is the sillstone (Wth 0.2m) of a single-light chamfered window. These appear to be of late-medieval date and may be associated with the castle. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
