Near the bottom of a S-facing slope with good views to the E, SE and W. Hachured and named ‘Cahermore’ on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). O’Donovan (Comber 1997, 15) recorded it in 1839, as ‘Cahirmore’ and ‘of thirty six yards in diameter, built of very large well shaped stones, the walls in some places seven feet high on the outside having a considerable batter or taper, and eight feet thick at the top (at height of seven feet)’ and opined that it was ‘the most remarkable’ of several cashels in the parish (ibid., 21). The souterrain was open in his time, but inaccessible ‘on account of the narrowness of the passage’ (ibid., 15). Westropp (1896, 367-8) described it as built ‘of finely fitted masonry’, with a visible outer face and a damaged inner face. He recorded the souterrain as ‘closed’ (Westropp 1900, 407). A well-preserved roughly circular cashel (ext. dims. 36.8m NE-SW) defined by a drystone wall (at S: Wth 2.1-2.3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.2m) and a spread of collapsed stone (Wth c. 6-7m; H 0.6-1m) with no visible entrance. The outer wall-face is generally visible, and the inner face is partially visible. In the SW, part of the wall has been rebuilt and a cell has been built on the wall at S. The interior slopes to the SW and a blocked up souterrain (CL016-052003-) is visible in the SE sector. The site of a tau cross (CL016-052002-) and cross fragment (CL016-052004-) are located c. 37m to the N and the site of a gateway (CL016-050----) is located c. 77m to the NW. Described by O'Donovan in 1830 as open but inaccessible ‘on account of the narrowness of the passage’ (Comber 1997, 15). Described by Westropp (1900, 407) as 'closed'. The entrance (H 1m; Wth 0.6m) to the souterrain is visible inside the wall of the cashel c. 8m from the centre. It is blocked up with old timbers. The stone fragment ‘may have formed the bottom of the shaft of the [tau] cross’ (Harbison 2009, 32). The fragment (L 0.48m; Wth 0.28m; T 0.1m) is no longer in situ and is kept in the OPW depot in Athenry under the SMR number GA084-151005-.The upper, decorated portion of the tau cross is currently on display in the old protestant church of Corofin (CL017-116001-), which now serves as an interpretative centre. At the bottom of a S-facing slope in a field of reclaimed grassland. Named ‘Ancient Grave’ on the 1916 OS 6-inch map. Westropp (1900, 431) described a cist in Roughaun near Cahermore (CL016-052001-) c. 150m to the NW with two skeletons ‘not extended, but with their feet to the east’. In 1907 he gave dimensions for the cist (L 1.67m; Wth 1.1m) and noted that the burials were discovered in 1885 by a Mr. G Fitzgerald (Westropp 1907, 464). An outcropping rock (L 1m; T 0.15m) at the S extent of a cairn (CL016-054002-) may be the partial remains of the cist. An exposed stone (L 1m; T 0.15m) at S may be the partial remains of a cist (CL016-054001-). Located at the NE edge of a cairn (CL016-146002-), this limestone standing stone (0.55m N-S; 0.34m E-W; max. H 1.08m at N) is aligned N-S. Its jagged top suggests it has been broken and another piece of limestone visible on the surface of the cairn, c. 0.7m to its S, may be the piece that was broken off. The stone is polished as a result of cattle using it as a scratching post. Some packing stones are visible at its base. On a low flat-topped hillock in pasture. A grassed-over flat-topped cairn (dims. at base: 6.2m N-S; 4.3m E-W; dims. at top 1.8m E-W; 1.16m N-S; H 0.3-0.6m). A standing stone (CL016-146001-) is located at its NE edge. On a rise in undulating pasture, with widest views out to W. Hachured on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subcircular cashel (40.7m NE-SW; 37.4m NW-SE) is defined by an overgrown wall (H c. 0.2m) of which only the basal stones survive. A later drystone wall is built over part of the cashel perimeter. There is an entrance gap (Wth 3m) at the WNW which may not be original. At the S edge of the grass-covered, gently NE-sloping interior a rectangular drystone structure with a curved NE corner (int. dims. 16.4m WNW-ESE; 4.4m NNE-SSW) is defined by a coursed wall (H 1-1.6m). There is a gap (Wth 2.1m) at the E end of the S wall, and a stone-filled doorway (Wth 1.1m) near the W end of that wall.
