In a slight sheltered depression surrounded by higher ground on all sides except W and NW and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL009-084001-). Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘cashel’ in the RMP (1996). Described by Westropp (1898, 361) as one of two ‘uninjured cahers’. A subcircular ring-barrow (30.5m NNE-SSW; 26m WNW-ESE) with a roughly circular central mound (15m NNE-SSW; 14.6m WNW-ESE) which is poorly preserved from S to NW and is defined by a fosse (Wth 2.6-3.6m; ext. H 0.55-0.9m; int. H 0.4-0.6m) and a bank (Wth 2.4-5.2m; int. H 0.55-0.9m; ext. H 0.3-0.9m). The fosse has displaced rocks from the bank at its flat base and the bank has been considerably disturbed by rabbit burrows. The bank contains occasional boulders and has been disturbed by cattle at N where a mixture of clay, gravel and stone has been exposed. A later gap (Wth 4.8m) has been cut into the bank at S. The bank (Wth 5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.1m) is best preserved to the E of this gap and is poorly preserved from WSW-WNW. In a sheltered hollow in high (between 500’ and 600’ contours) rough grazing and limestone pavement, and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL009-084001-). Indicated, but not labelled, on both the 1840 and 1916 editions of the OS 6-inch map. Swinfen (1992, 115) quotes an 1879 description by the Rev. Philip Dwyer: ‘The walls are built with very small stones, the gables are rounded at the corners, the roof seems to have been arched like a bridge. There is a bench of stones all round the inside of the walls, evidently used for seating the congregation. The old simple stone altar still stands.’ Westropp (1900-02, 134) subsequently described the monument as, ‘A rudely built late structure, all features destroyed; no trace of the alleged stone roof. Swinfen (op. cit.) also wrote, ‘The church was said to have been in use in the penal times, and from its situation that is easy to believe.’ A very poorly preserved rectangular structure is orientated E-W (int. dims. L 10.6; Wth 4m) and is constructed from roughly coursed rectangular blocks and flag stones. The W gable wall, though damaged (H c. 2.6m) is the best preserved of the surviving walls; the E gable wall is reduced to ground level while only the lower courses of the N and S sidewalls survive (max. H c. 1.5m). The church is ‘sandwiched’ between two slightly larger rectangular enclosures; one abutting at N (est. L c. 16m E-W; Wth c. 8.2m N-S) and one abutting at S (est. L 19m E-W; Wth c. 10m N-S), both defined by drystone walls. An enclosure and hut site (CL010-230---- and CL010-224----) are located c. 107m to the NNW and another field system (CL010-231----) is located c. 70m to the NE. See attachment: CL010-011----_01 Aerial view of monument from NW. Note abutting enclosures. Situated on slightly raised ground in generally level stony grassland. Noted during inspection in the area in 1999 as a possible enclosure but found to be an earth and stone bank (SSW-ESE) of modern construction relating to an adjacent house and outbuildings. Situated on the Carran plateau, within a prehistoric enclosure (CL010-230----). A well preserved circular hut site (diam. 11m externally; diam. 4m internally) defined by a broad bank of stone (H 0.4m at S to 0.9m at E) with evidence of some inner and outer facing. Situated on the Carran plateau, immediately W of Carran village. An irregular enclosure (max. diam. c. 100m NW-SE), one of 5 prehistoric enclosures on the plateau (Jones et al. 2011, 46, fig.4, Enclosure 2). It is defined by three arcs at W with walls similar to another of the 5 enclosures c. 500m to the SE (CL010-015001-) dated to the Late Bronze Age (Gibson 2007, 1-29). A hut site (CL010-224----) lies within the enclosure and appears to be contemporary. A later field wall traverses the enclosure NW-SE. A field system (CL010-231---) is associated to the SE. (Hennigar 2008, 63-8; Jones et al. 2011, 44-9) Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 17 May 2016 - CL010-231: Field system, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCL010-231----. Situated on the Carran plateau, immediately W of Carran village. A field system associated with an enclosure (CL010-230----) immediately to the NW (Jones et al. 2011, 46, fig.4, SE of Enclosure 2). The field walls have varying morphologies. Some are mound walls, others are similar to the walls of the enclosure with large facing slabs, and others are composed of large slabs placed on edge, but stacked against each other. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
