In a hollow in uneven rough pasture, within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL010-064001-) and c. 122m to the SSW of Cahercommaun cashel (CL010-064003-). Listed as ‘Occupation site – prehistoric’ in the RMP (1996). This hut site was excavated by D. Blair Gibson in 1986 (Gibson 1987) as part of the Cahercommaun Archaeological Research Project, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of many small unenclosed hut sites around Cahercommaun cashel. It was given the identification number C-221 in that project and the hut site (CL010-064002-) was described as comprising three features: C-221 A, a subrectangular ‘enclosure’ (L 6m; Wth 4m / diam. 8m) defined by a collapsed stone wall; C-221 B, a subcircular depression (diam. 5.75m) immediately to the SW, with a notably stone-free interior surface and bedrock cupmarks directly to the SW; and C-221 C, a ‘clochán’ which was considered of later date, located 7.5m to the SW of C-221 B. The excavation concentrated on C-221 A. This was found to be associated with two field systems, possibly of different dates. A large amount of artefacts were recovered – almost exclusively stone tools but also some pottery (ibid.). Not visible at ground level during an inspection in 1999. On the densely overgrown (hazel, blackthorn and briar) S edge of a shallow valley through which a small stream flows W, and c. 65m SW of a low cliff over which a waterfall flows from the ‘Seven Streams of Teeskagh’ (1897 OS 25-inch plan; 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map), or ‘Seacht Srotha na Taosca’ (Robinson’s map of the Burren, 1977). Within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL010-064001-). Hachured and labelled ‘Ancient Grave’ on the OS 25-inch plan (1897) and the Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. This large overgrown suboval cairn (14m N-S; 12m E-W; H 1-1.4m) incorporates a cist (CL010-064079-) to the SE of centre. Westropp (1905, 218-9) noted that ‘the cairn is of large blocks, embodying a great boulder, evidently deposited there by older and mightier agencies than the cairn builders.’ References Robinson, T. 1977 (revised 1999) The Burren. On a SW-facing semi-karst slope in rough pasture within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL010-064001-). Indicated on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map, and labelled ‘Sheepfold’ on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan. This subrectangular enclosure (19m E-W; 16m N-S) is defined by a stone wall of slabs set on edge. There is an entrance in the NE corner. Two animal pens are built against the outside of the S wall. A small modern corbelled pen lies c. 19 to the NW. See attached image: CL010-064008-_01.JPG Aerial view of site from south (Photo. Markus Casey, March 2007). On a gentle SW-facing slope in high (between the 500’ and 600’ contours) rough pasture within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL010-064001-), with wide views S-W-NW. Indicated on both the OS 25-inch plan (1897) and the Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Rectangular enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subrectangular enclosure (int. dims. 66m E-W; 51m N-S; ext. dims. 70.5m E-W; 55m N-S) with rounded corners is defined by a double-faced wall (Wth 1.3-3m; int. H 0.8-1.8m; ext. H 0.2-1.6m) of uncoursed, medium-sized flagstones laid on end. A later field wall overlies the S and most of the N sides and there is a wide gap (Wth 10m) near the centre of the S wall. The W-sloping interior is rocky, with later livestock pens at the SW, W, NW and NE edges. Later field walls radiate from the exterior NW, NE and SE corners. A wedge tomb (CL010-064006-) lies c. 150m to the NW and there is a second wedge tomb (CL010-064068-) c. 150m to the E. See attached image: CL010-064010-_01 Aerial view of monument from south (Photo. Situated on the NW slopes of a ridge in good rocky grazing and within a large field system (CL010-064001-). Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. On inspection this was found to be a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) of apparently modern construction defined by a wall of loose leaning slabs with a sheepfold outside the S sector. Situated near the SE end of a steep rocky hill and within a large field system (CL010-064001-). Listed as ‘Cairn’ in the RMP (1996). On inspection in 1999 this was found to be a small cairn (diam. 1.8m; H 1m) of apparently modern construction. Other similar cairns lie in the next field to the S. In a slight hollow on the NW side of a ridge in rough pasture and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL010-064001-). Reported by Paul Walsh and Vincent Steadman. This poorly preserved wedge tomb appears to be orientated NE-SW, and comprises a large sidestone (L 2.95m; H 0.8m; T 0.12m) on the SE which is incorporated into a later drystone field wall running NE-SW; an endstone (L 1.3m; H 0.2m; T 0.07m) at NE (which leans to the NE), and two endstones set side by side at SW (NW endstone L 0.72m; H 0.25m; T 0.05m; SE endstone L 1.05m; H 0.4m; T 0.07m). See attached image: CL010-064068-_01.JPG Monument viewed from SE showing SE sidestone incorporated into later field wall. Situated to SE of centre of a cairn (CL010-064007-). This cist (est. 2.1m E-W; c. 0.85m N-S) is defined by a single long slab (L 2m; H 0.2m) on the S side, and a fragment of a smaller slab at the E end of the N side (indicating an internal width of 0.6m for the cist). Several loose flagstones outside the NE corner are possibly related. Westropp (1905, 218; 214, Fig. 5) found the cist in a better state of preservation, recording a complete N slab (L 1.57m) and smaller slabs lining the E and W ends. De Valera and Ó Nualláin (1961, 94) described this as a long cist. See attached image: CL010-064079-_01.JPG Snip of Westropp’s sketch plan (1905, 214, Fig. 5).
