In pasture, on level ground, above SSE-facing slope. Circular area (43m ENE-WSW; 42m NNW-SSE) enclosed by overgrown earthen bank (int. H 1.1m; ext. H 1.5m); external fosse (D 0.5m). Causewayed entrance (Wth 7.5m) to E, appears to have been widened to allow access for farm machinery. Lime kiln built into outer face of bank to WSW; collapsed. Interior saucer shaped and slopes gently down towards entrance; covered by grass and thistles. Ringfort (CO018-022---) lies c. 70m to S in same field. In level pasture, above SSE-facing slope, overlooking River Funshion to S. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1842, 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps. Low rise visible in area of site. According to local information levelled 1983, as water collecting in fosse caused flooding in lower fields. Banks visible as cropmark in aerial photograph (CASAP) shows enclosure to be bivallate. Ringfort (CO018-021---) in same field c. 70m to N. In pasture, on N bank of Funshion River, within early ecclesiastical site (13873). Pentagonal graveyard (c. 70m WSW-ESE; c. 50m max. NNW-SSE) enclosed by stone-faced earthen bank; S third of graveyard slopes steeply down to S. Entered to N by stone stile, dated 1877, and recent gate. Low parallel earthen banks (c. 100m N-S) define straight trackway leading from road to graveyard. Ruin of parish church of Aghacross (14387) in centre. In use; earliest headstone noted dated 1740. Many low uninscribed gravemarkers, to W, S and E of church; mostly 20th-century burials to N of church (Hanley et al. 1995, 37-47). Many graves evident in interior of church, including vault at foot of 18th-century Massy tomb, at E end of church. Holy well (13934), near SW corner. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In centre of graveyard (14536), within early ecclesiastical site (13873). Ruin of rectangular church comprising nave (16.3m E-W; 7.4m N-S) with chancel extension to E (10.1m E-W; 7.4m N-S). Walls mostly survive to full height; nave built of sandstone rubble, chancel of roughly coursed sandstone and limestone. Walls of chancel have gentle base batter; batter on nave walls either added to original wall or part of rebuilding. Heavy overgrowth, particularly on E gable, cleared in late 1980s. In 1992 Cork County Council commissioned architectural survey (Hanley et al. 1995), on which following account of church is largely based. Council carried out conservation work in 1993-4, including consolidation of E gable, return of N chancel wall and parts of S wall. Nave entered through doorway in centre of W gable. External jambs composed of re-used Romanesque fragments; using these, together with fragments noted in W and N walls and recovered from graveyard, the original Romanesque W doorway, which had three orders, can be reconstructed (see O'Keeffe in Hanley et al. 1995, 24-6). East ends of S and N walls of nave finish in butt-ends, showing clearly it pre-dates chancel; no wall now between nave and chancel but unfaced scar of former E end wall of nave visible internally on S wall. Only evidence for window in nave is ruinous embrasure (Wth c. 2.9m) towards E end of S wall. Doorway to chancel, at W end of S wall, now ruinous: straight ingoings under shallow segmental arch; holy water stoup in E jamb; fragments of chamfered fluted jambstones found nearby, one re-used as gravemarker, probably from door surround. East wall has central window with twin ogee-headed light under stepped hood moulding; embrasure, splayed under round arch, now completely blocked with stonework and by Massy tomb of 1771 built up against it on the inside. Carved sandstone head protrudes from W side of external face of gable (ibid., fig. 8). Top of gable missing; coping stones similar to those at Carrigdownane (14402) and other nearby churches. South wall of chancel has window towards E end, with splayed embrasure under shallow segmental arch; light, under stepped hood moulding, largely missing, though head of twin ogee-headed light found nearby. Square beam slot over finely carved limestone corbel, immediately W of embrasure arch, may have supported rood screen. Pointed-arch niche near SE corner probably for piscina- base below present ground surface. North wall has central gap (L 6m); at E end of gap is jamb of splayed window embrasure- window sill found in rubble nearby. Bullaun stone (13908) and fragment of stone mortar were found in rubble inside chancel during restoration work. Parish church of Aghacross, known locally as Templemolaga. Nave contains core of Romanesque church which O'Keeffe (ibid., 26) dates to around 1150-60AD. Nave was extensively rebuilt when chancel added in 15th/ 16th century. Church listed in Papal Taxation lists of 1291; reported 'in repair' in 1615, but abandoned by 1694 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 114). Just inside S boundary wall of graveyard (14536), c. 25m SSW of church (14387). Well is open, rectangular and stone lined; access down two steps set into SW corner; appears to be no longer in holy use. Photograph by Grove White (1905-25, vol. 1, opp. 24) shows numerous cups on ledge on S side. He also relates (ibid., 10) local traditions that water from well was suitable for drinking and curative purposes and that a trout becomes visible in the well when attempts are made to boil water from it. On N bank of River Funshion. Presumably on same site as 12th-century church (14387) known locally as Templemolaga. According to Joyce (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 1, 12-3), church at Aghacross established by St Molaga, who was born nearby at Liathmuine (12307) (ibid., 15) around 590 AD (Hanley et al. 1995, 1). Described as chief church of the Tuath O Cuscraidh (Power 1932, 30) in Crichad an Chaoilli. No visible surface trace of enclosure (pers. comm. J. Monk). Bullaun stone (13908) associated with site. Found in rubble, in NE corner of Aghacross church (14387) during archaeological survey (Hanley et al. 1995, 30).
