Coastal mining complex c.1km NW of Allihies. Indicated on OS 6-inch map (1842) as Engine Ho. Remains of foundations of engine house built adjacent to mineshaft. Stump of free-standing chimney (diam. 3.83m; H 2.6m) to NW of engine house. Sub-rectangular earthen banked reservoir to NW. In boggy ground, 150m NE of Allihies mining complex (CO114-02202-). Subrectangular area (12m N-S; 8m NW-SE), enclosed to SE and SW by earthen bank (int. H 1.4m) and bounded by laneway to NE. Bank levelled to NW. In SW quadrant, c. 6m from bank, is circular stone-lined depression (diam 1.6m; D 0.6m), possibly remains of well. (O'Brien 1970, 24). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. On a rocky promontory, jutting W into the sea, with tall cliffs on its S, W and N sides. This promontory is named Dooneen on the 1897-1909 OS 6-inch map and is still known locally as such. The Doon [Dún] element in the name suggests that there may have been a promontory fort here. The promontory and its environs was mined for copper in the early 19th century and any traces of the fort would have been destroyed at that time. An abandoned mineshaft and mining waste occupy the E end of the promontory. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO114-023: Anomalous stone group, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO114-023----. On low mound in boggy ground overlooking sea. Group of nine partially embedded stones, two of which are upright (H 1.16m; 0.9m x 0.8m: H 1.15m; 0.83m x 0.36m), forming a rough circle. Three larger stones rest on these at SSW and NNE ends. One stone protrudes slightly in centre which is otherwise clear. Known locally as 'grappadgh' (O'Shea and Crowley 1972, 95). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 - CO114-024: Penitential station, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO114-024----. In rough grazing at roadside. Semi-circular area defined on straight side (L 9m) by roadway and by arc of field fence NW->SE. Three small cairns of quartz stones and a boulder (diam. 1m) in interior. According to local information, 'rounds' were made here in the past; also know as 'the landing place of the Children of Lir' (O'Shea and Crowley 1972, 94). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 - CO114-076: Hut site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO114-076----. In rough stony hill pasture, in a N-S hollow, sheltered by a ridge of outcropping rock at the W and by a steeply rising rocky hillside at the E. The remains of a circular hut site (5.3m E-W; 5.25m N-S) defined by a partially destroyed stone wall (T 1.4m; H 1.2m). The wall survives best SE-SW where it is faced internally and externally by well-constructed uncoursed masonry that encloses a fill of mainly smaller stones. Along the S arc, and at a height of 1m above ground level, the external and internal wall-faces slope (0.1m) inward. The wall SW-SE is largely collapsed, the stones from which may have been used to build a more recent linear wall that extends across the interior of the hut site from the SW arc. A break in this wall indicates an entrance into the now enclosed SE sector of the hut, which may have been used as a shelter. The wall of the rubble-covered NE sector is almost totally gone. Here, the internal foundation course of larger stones is partially intact, but only slight traces of the base stones of the external face survive. The incline in the wall along the S arc, in addition to the large volume of rubble on the ground, suggests that this may have been a corbelled hut or clochán. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO114-077: Hut site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO114-077----. In rough hill pasture, in a N-S hollow sheltered by ridges of gorse-covered outcropping rock, on a S-facing slope. The remains of a D-shaped hut site (2.1m N-S) defined by the disturbed lower courses of a drystone wall (T 0.45m; H 0.35) with a straight S side (L 3.2m). The interior is raised (H 0.4m) at the S and cut (D 0.2m) into the upslope at the N to compensate for the hillslope. Rubble obscures the interior of the hut site. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO114-091: Megalithic tomb - wedge tomb, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO114-091----. In rush-covered hill pasture in an area of bog, on a saddle to the S of Knocknagallaun, with views to the SW over Ballydonegan Bay. The gallery (L 2.15m; Wth 1.1m at W, narrowing to 0.85m at E) is aligned NE-SW. The N side comprises a single upright stone and the S side is formed of two stones; no backstone is visible. A slab (exposed surface: 1.5m x 1.9m) lying 0.25m to the SE of the gallery, and largely enveloped in peat, may be a displaced roofstone. Beside the gallery to the S at the edge of a break in slope are the remains of a rectangular platform used for storing cut peat. It is likely that the tomb served as a quarry for this structure. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO127-034: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO127-034----. In level pasture, beside the N shore of Ballydonegan Bay. A circular raised area (11.7m N-S; 11.4m E-W; H 1.2m above outer ground level) is defined by a scarp (H 1.2m) with a low earthen bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.3m) at WSW, NW-NE and SE-SSE along the top of the perimeter. Part of the SW arc is damaged and contains grass-covered upcast and a short section of the S arc is truncated by the E-W wall of an old road at S. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009).
