In 1974 machine clearance in course of reclamation work dislodged capstone of polygonal cist. Investigated by Shee (O'Kelly and Shee 1974) who noted cist (max. diam. c. 0.7m) lined with six upright stones (av. H 0.5m) and polygonal slab formed base; cist set into pit (diam. c. 0.85m; D 0.75m). Cremated bones of child and at least one adult were covered by inverted Enlarged Food Vessel Urn. Urn well-made (max. dims. c. 0.35m; H 0.36m): slightly hollow vertical neck, smoothly curved shoulder, straight-sided body narrowing towards base. Three parallel rows of impressed triangles cover external bevel of rim; inner surface rim has three rows of alternatively sloping scores separated by lines of impressed triangles. Externally, neck has three raised horizontal bands decorated with herringbone incissions; horizontal zone of raised vertical bands similarly decorated on shoulder. Rest of body decorated with nine bands of obliquely set grooves alternating in direction (ibid., 80). Unburnt bones of female adult found in disturbed area around cist. Pit (diam. 0.6m; D 0.3m) contained small heap of cremated bone (diam. c. 0.22m) at base; bone comprised remains of foetus, infant and adult; canine tusk of boar, perforated for use as a pendant, accompanied cremation. On E bank of Awbeg River, c. 1km N of Castletownroche. Rectangular 3-storey roofless mill (int.: 13.5m E-W; 6.5m N-S), built against steep scarp to E. Front elevation (S) of 5 bays; windows externally stone-arched over wooden lintels (now gone), brick-arched internally. Infilled wheel-pit alongside W wall; stone-arched ope (Wth 1.3m) for intake of power at base of W wall. Interior empty shell. End walls same height as side walls indicating roof was hipped. Named 'old mill (in ruins)' on 1842 OS 6-inch map, which shows millrace (L c. 750m) to N taking water from river at two points. Cattle gap in bank to SSW and N; entrance (Wth 6m) to E, revetted on N side by three stones. Remains of stone facing on outer face of bank to N of entrance. Fosse skirted by field boundary SSE->NW. Interior raised slightly (H 0.5m) around edge on N side thereby levelling interior and creating an inner fosse. Small circular feature hachured in interior on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Interior level and heavily overgrown with briars. Second ringfort (CO026-06501-) immediately to NNE; two fosses separated by bank of earth.
