Removal of turf revealed roughly circular spread of burnt material (c. 11m N-S; c. 11.7m E-W) with slight central depression. Excavation confined to area of depression and exposed rectangular, plank-built trough (1.85m N-S; 0.7m E-W); portion of floor and parts of side planks well preserved. Trough set in pit (c. 2.3m N-S; c. 1.3m E-W) which was partially backfilled to hold trough in position. Base of trough filled to depth of c. 0.36m by fire-shattered stones in a blue-black clay loam matrix, overlain with c. 0.44m of mound material, sealed by layer of cemented buff clay (D c. 0.24m) over which was a further thin spread of mound material. A number of stake-holes cut into subsoil in NW edge of pit were tentatively identified as 'traces of racks for hanging meat' (ibid., 85). Samples of timber from one of the side planks of the trough was radiocarbon dated to 3850±30BP (GrN-11803) (ibid., 86). Mound of burnt material still visible when site inspected in 1986. Archaeologically excavated in 1982-3 (Lehane 1988, 90-91, site 3) in advance of drainage works; prior to excavation, rectangular mound (37.5m N-S; 23.5m E-W) noted. Excavation revealed rectangular structure (14.4m x 7.5m) consisting mainly of comminuted red-glazed hand-made bricks with some intact bricks. Underneath were deposits of homogenous burnt material (D c. 0.1m) and leached soil (D c. 0.22m). Strips of compacted yellow clay (L c. 5m; Wth c. 0.7m) delimited brick deposits along NE and SW sides. A number of stake-holes were noted along the SE and NW sides and a slot extended outwards at an angle from the SE side. The exact nature and function of the site remain unclear but the excavator suggests that it may have been a post-medieval brick manufacturing site or the remains of a collapsed, possibly burnt down, brick-built structure (ibid.). Stepped gables, battlements, a pair of buttresses at either end; mullioned windows. Hall with impressive Tudor-Revival staircase' (Bence-Jones 1978, 20). According to Pike (1911, 73), house 'said to be 300 years old and has been added to from time to time'. 'Castle and lands of Ballyclohee' included in grant of lands to Arthur Hyde in 1588 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 2, 89). Tudor arch entrance doorway with coade stone label-moulding and surround and having half-glazed timber panelled door. Three-bay two-storey outbuilding to west, having pitched slate roof with cast-iron weather vane to east gable, painted lined-and-ruled rendered walls, square-headed door and window openings, and segmental-headed vehicular entrance.
