In pasture. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; partially levelled to S and W on 1940 OS 6-inch map. Arc formed by earthen bank (int. H 1.3m) and external fosse (D 1.75m) survives to E; incorporated into field fence system. Souterrain (CO085-067002-) in interior. In SW quadrant of ringfort (CO085-067001-). First described by J. Windele in 1843 as stone-built, zig-zag, in three sections; lengths for each section are 5.48m; 4.87m and 5.48m (McCarthy 1977, 161). Brash (1879, 140) stated that it had 'rectangular chambers connected by the usual narrow passages and extending for a length of 52ft'. Six capstones had ogham inscriptions (CO085-067003-; CO085-067004-; CO085-067005-; CO085-067006-; CO085-067007-; CO085-067008-; these are now in the National Museum of Ireland. No visible surface trace of souterrain. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Discovered in 1846 built into a souterrain (CO085-067002-), in the SW quadrant of a ringfort (CO085-067001-), with five other ogham stones (CO085-067004-) (CO085-067005-) (CO085-067006-) (CO085-067007-) (CO085-067008-), now in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland (see DU018-369----). The stone (0.6m; 0.3m x 0.1m) is broken and missing the first part of the inscription, which Macalister (1945, 93, no. 97) gave as ...]LL MAQI VORRTIGURN. According to Macalister this is a secondary inscription, the older, apparently copied 'in minute pin-scrapes on the unoccupied part of the second inscribed angle', is given as DIOBI (ibid.). This stone is now on display in the museum in Ballyferriter, Co. Kerry (see KE042-180----). The inscription is on three angles of the stone (0.9m; 0.4m x 0.2m), given by Macalister (1945, 94-6, no. 98) as CORBAGNI K[OI] M[A]Q[I] MOCCOI COROTANI, and by McManus (1991, 66) as CORBAGNI K.. ...COI cOROtANI. The stone (1.2m; 0.5m x 0.25m) is damaged so that some of the inscription may be lost. What remains was read by Macalister (1945, 96-7, no. 99) as SACATTINI; McManus (1991, 66) had difficulty reading both I's. The inscription is cut on one angle of the stone (1.3m; 0.6m x 0.2m), read by Macalister (1945, 97, no. 100) as AB ULCCAGNI. Macalister (1945, 97, no. 100) thought the prefix AB an abbreviation of Abbot. According to McManus (1991, 61) the AB 'is best ignored.' It is a roughly-squared stone (1.4m; 0.5m x 0.4m) with an inscription, which Macalister (1945, 98, no. 101) gave as MAQI-ESEA MAQI DOMANEQI, on the angle between the two which bear the main inscription are cut what Macalister (ibid.) describes as 'a line of enigmatic characters'.
