In waterlogged pasture. Spread of burnt material noted. Springs shown on 1937 OS 6-inch map to E and S now dry. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Residential 2-storey gable-ended house (13m E-W; 5.9m N-S) with projection to rear (N). Entrance front (S) of 3 bays; irregular fenestration with enlarged modern windows; door ope at W end recently inserted which, according to owner, replaced earlier "rounded" window. Windows have been modernized throughout; according to owner some of the original windows were"rounded". Many of original internal door opes have segmental arches most of which are now blocked. Square projections at either end of S elevation shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map no longer survive. At W end of N elevation is 2-storey square projection with pyramidal roof; plaster repair mark on N wall where N obtrusion was recently removed. Blocked segmental arched door ope at 1st floor level on W gable. Repair mark on N wall of projection and door ope on W gable suggest that the house was larger to W and N. E gable of house is noticeably thicker (T c. 1m) than other walls (T c. 0.5m); external elevation has ledge (D c. 0.3m) at 1st-floor level; according to owner, projecting stones (to E) at either end of wall removed and fireplace at 1st floor level blocked. All these features suggest this is a wall of an earlier house which extended to E. In farmyard c. 10m N of E end of house are remains of random rubble stone wall (T c. 1m; H c. 2m; L8.5m E-W); E end curves in a semicircle (int. 1.6m E-W; 2m N-S). Two-storey stone-built farm building on W side of farmyard with arched entrance was recently demolished but had a date stone of 1810 (Healy 1988, 50). Castle connected with Dean Rowland Davis (c. 1690s) but it is likely to have got its name from James Davis proprietor in early 19th century; in 1820 house described as 'castillated' (ibid.); in 1881 used as Constabulary Barracks (ibid).
