Found in pasture, on a N-facing slope. This is a sandstone slab (H 2.22m; 1.8m x 0.38m), long axis NNW-SSE. The ogham inscription is on the S and SE edges, but is badly flaked on the lower edges. It was read by Macalister (1945, 63, no. 59) as probably ...UIVAIBES [...]RTAGNI. It was part of a complex series of monuments of which this is a sole survivor. 'Dallaun' is marked on the 1842 OS 6-inch map outside the NW corner of a now levelled square enclosure (CO052-039002-). This would correspond reasonably with the present position of the stone. However, Macalister (ibid.), quoting Windele, described four standing stones inside the enclosure, of which he says this was one (see 2nd ogham stone: CO052-053---). In tillage, on NNE-facing slope. Depicted as rectangular enclosure (c. 45m NW-SE; c. 45m SW-NE) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; low rise indicates line of levelled bank on N side and to WSW. Bank to E may be incorporated into field fence system. According to Macalister (1945, 63) Windele recorded 'a large square enclosure surrounded by an earthen embankment having a deep fosse outside'. He also referred to two ogham stones (CO052-03901-; CO052-053---) and possible souterrain (CO052-057---) here. Second rectangular enclosure (CO052-037---) c. 250m to WNW. In pasture, at end of NE-facing slope. Depicted on 1842 OS 6-inch map as four standing stones, immediately E of NE corner of rectangular enclosure (CO052-03902-). Macalister (1945, 63, no. 59) claims, probably wrongly, that one of stones is an ogham stone - see (CO052-03901-). Removed; no visible surface trace. Windele (in Macalister 1943, 63) described four stones, two of which were ogham inscribed (CO052-03901-; CO052-053---), within the rectangular enclosure; destroyed in the mid-nineteenth century. Possibly the same stones. (deValera and O Nualláin 1982, 44) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. In pasture, on NE-facing slope. Windele (Macalister 1945, 63) recorded 'a souterrain formed in hard boulder-clay, with a beehive-shaped chamber at the end. This is one of four stones recorded by Windele (Macalister 1943, 63) prior to their destruction in the mid-ninteenth century. The inscription on this stone was read by Windele and Macalister (ibid, no. 60) as MAILAGN(I). Macalister (ibid) quotes or paraphrases Windele thus: 'Within the enclosure (CO052-039002-)....four standing stones. One of these is the ogham no. 1 (CO052-039001-). Twenty yards south of it was a pair of stones, one of which was the ogham no. 2 (CO052-053---). Windele (Macalister 1945, 63), in describing standing stones and ogham stones (CO052-03901-; CO052-053---) within rectangular enclosure (CO052-03902-), refers to '....solitary pillar, with some flagstones laid down close by, probably the roofing of a souterrain.' In pasture, at the top of a N-facing slope. This souterrain, which consists of two chambers, was discovered in 2005 when the ground collapsed during silage cutting. The resulting opening (0.65m x 0.6m) allowed access to the SW corner of the S chamber (3.4m N-S; 2.2m E-W; H 1.5m) which was earth-cut and rectangular in plan. The roof of this chamber is 0.65m below present ground level. Its SW end is filled with collapsed earth and a displaced roof lintel. The roof is constructed of large overlapping flagstones resting on two large lintels and supported by four pillar stones. The NE and SW pillars bear ogham inscriptions (CO052-061002-, CO052-061003-). A creepway (min. L 1.25m) in the centre of the E wall may lead to the original entrance but it is blocked with earth. There is a wide recess (L 1.25m) at the S end of the W wall; its function is unclear. A narrow creepway in the N wall gives access to the N chamber. This roughly oval chamber (1.6m N-S; 2.1m E-W; H 1.2m) is also earth-cut. Another souterrain (CO052-039004-) lies c. 210m to the SSW and in the 1940s a possible souterrain (CO052-038----) was recorded c. 230m to the WSW. (McCarthy 2005) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). This ogham stone was discovered in a souterrain (CO052-061001-) in 2005 where it was one of four pillars supporting the roof (McCarthy 2005). This is the NE pillar stone. The SW pillar also bears an ogham inscription (see CO052-061003-). This is a sandstone pillar, subrectangular in section (1.4m x 0.5m X 0.26m) narrowing towards the top. It is inscribed on the right angle and the inscription reads up the stone: MAQI-TRENI AVI (T)……. The ogham scores are chiselled and average 1cm in width by 4-6cm in length. The lettering, particularly the vowel notches, are quite worn, possibly indicating that the stone had been exposed to the elements for a long time, possibly centuries before it was appropriated for use in the souterrain. This ogham stone was discovered in a souterrain (CO052-061001-) in 2005 where it was one of four pillars supporting the roof (McCarthy 2005). This is the SW pillar stone. The NE pillar stone also bears an ogham inscription (see CO052-061002-). This is an irregularly shaped, rough, sandstone pillar, subrectangular in section (1.5m x 0.24m x 0.35m), inscribed on the right angle of one of the narrower faces. The inscribed face of the stone widens towards the top and the ogham inscription, in so far as it survives, is confined to the narrower lower part of the stone. The surviving letters can be read as follows: (L)……C(A)……. CIOT. At first glance it would appear that nothing intelligible can be gleaned from this reading but given what is known about ogham inscriptions and the range of formulae used in its monumental phase, it is likely that we are looking at an inscription using the MAQI MUCOI formula, meaning son of a remote ancestor. A very tentative reading as follows can be proposed L……[MA](Q)I [MU]COI T….
