On S-facing slope, to S of River Lee. Roughly-circular area (c. 210m N-S; c. 280m E-W) enclosed E->SW by earthen field fence built atop remains of earlier earthen bank (H 1.4m); from SW->NE by partially collapsed roughly coursed stone wall (H 1m; Wth 0.8m), in places built atop rock outcrop; roadway skirts site from NE->E. Interior bisected by roadway running roughly NE-SW; land NW of road is mixture of pasture and rock outcropping with copse of trees in NE quadrant; land SE of road is pasture. Interior slopes down from N to S. Within enclosure, almost in a central position and immediately N of road, is rectangular graveyard (CO071-108002-), enclosing site of ancient parish church of Cannaway and of C of I church. Souterrain (CO071-108006-) recorded in SW quandrant of enclosure and cross-inscribed stone (CO071-108005-) found in NW quadrant of graveyard. Bullaun stone (9217) found c. 90m W of enclosure. Hurley and O'Flaherty (1981, 58-9) noted that, although Bawnatemple is clearly an early ecclesiastical site, the earliest unequivocal reference to it is in decretal letter of Innocent III 1199. Traditionally site associated with St Brendan the Navigator, though according to Hurley and O'Flaherty (ibid.) this is 'extremely tenuous'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In central position within early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO071-108001-); rectangular graveyard (c. 60m SW-NE; c. 25m NW-SE) enclosed by drystone wall. In use; earliest inscribed headstone noted dated 1765; low uninscribed gravestones concentrated towards E end. In centre, site of ancient parish church (CO071-108004-) of Cannaway; no visible surface trace. Church here in ruins by 1639; in 1700 only half the walls were standing (Brady 1863, vol.1, 55-6). In NW corner site of C of I parish church (CO071-108003-), built in 1814 (ibid.,58) and described by Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 248) as 'plain building with a lofty square tower'; in ruins by 1900 and demolished in 1930s (Hartnett 1939, 143); small pile of rubble all that now remains. Ruined rectangular building (long axis N-S) shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map immediately outside N wall of graveyard, towards E end; smaller rectangular structure to W. Hurley and O'Flaherty (1981, 55) conclude from surviving descriptions that former was 'a house which probably belonged to the Longs, the hereditary ecclesiastical family who occupied the site for much of the medieval period'; no visible surface trace of either structure. Stone (CO071-108005-) inscribed with 7th-century Maltese cross found in field immediately to NW in 1970s. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Found in 1970s during ploughing in field immediately NW of graveyard, within early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO071-108001-). Described in detail by Hurley and O'Flaherty (1981, 53-61): sandstone slab (L 0.42m; 0.26m x 0.14m) bearing an incised incomplete circle (max. diam. 0.23m) within which is carved 'a cross of arcs' probably representing a Maltese cross. They conclude that stone was displayed in an upright position, suggest a 7th century date and note similarities with cross slab (9244) from Ballyvourney 19km to W. In the SW quadrant of an early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO071-108001-). This souterrain was discovered during silage cutting in May 1999 when the ground collapsed. An opening (0.85m x 0.7m) resulting from the collapse allowed access to a small oval earth-cut chamber (1.72m NW-SE; 1.15m NE-SW). The roof of this chamber is 0.6m below present ground level. At SSW, a creepway (Wth c. 0.5m; L 0.6m) leads to a blocked-up construction shaft (H 0.28m) with three courses of stones visible. Another short creepway or opening (Wth 0.86m; L 0.45m) leads from the N side of the chamber to a passage (L 2m; Wth 0.8m). Extending to the SSE from the passage is a shaft which tapers upwards and which is likely to be an air-vent. At the W end of the passage is another creepway (L 0.8m; Wth 0.65m; H c. 0.4m) leading to a large oval chamber (3.5m NE-SW; 1.65m NW-SE; H 0.87m) the base of which is cut into bedrock. There is a blocked-up construction shaft (Wth 0.6m; H 0.65m) at SSW. A small oval creepway (L 0.3m) leads to the WSW into a small annexe (1.64m SSE-NNW; H 0.55m) filled with collapsed material. Another souterrain (CO071-108006-), which is probably stone-built, is indicated on the 1938 OS 6-inch map c. 70m to the E.
