Flour mill to SW of Crookstown. According to local tradition, Herricks originally built mill (no longer survives) 1km to SW, near weir shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map; due to insufficient head of water, mills moved to present location, shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as 'Bellmount Mills'. Howards leased mill from Herricks in 1848; mill then powered by overshot water wheel (diam 26ft; L 7ft) (Kerins et al. 1985, 11). Rectangular mill (long axis E-W), 6-storey with attic, gable-ended; W gable plus addition to N weatherslated. Date stone of 1810 recently uncovered on lintel over door. Wheel pit along W gable with mill pond to W; in early 20th century a Gilbert, Gilkes and Gordon turbine (52HP) installed, powering machinery within mill via pulley and belt system. National Gas and Diesel engine installed in 1926 to supplement power; electricity provided full power after 1958; turbine and engine removed. Grain drying kiln on W end of S wall used as carpenter's work shop in early part of 20th century; another addition on W end of N wall. Later addition onto E end of S wall which now houses two pairs of French burr millstones, set on iron table, installed in 1920s; now electrically driven with modern spindles underneath. Numerous modern mill buildings/silos along N side. Pair of semi-detached early 19th-century 2-storey residential mill houses to N still occupied. Approached by laneway from N, on SE side of Crookstown village; rectangular graveyard (c. 65m E-W; c. 50m N-S) enclosed by poorly preserved stone wall. In occasional use. At centre are ruins of Moviddy C of I parish church (CO083-075004-). Earliest noted headstone dated 1764; roofless mausoleum to E of church contains classical wall plaque dated 1719 (Anon. 1898-1900, 10-11); there are other family vaults in E section of graveyard and some chest tombs. The 1842 OS 6-inch map shows dotted circle labelled 'site of Old Building' (CO083-075002-) immediately N of graveyard; no visible surface trace. Glebe house (CO083-076----) c. 300m to ENE. The 1842 OS 6-inch map shows a dotted circle labelled 'site of Old Building' immediately N of the graveyard (CO083-075001-). There are no visible remains of this building. The ruined 18th-century C of I parish church (CO083-075004-) of Moviddy is built on or near the site of the ancient parish church of Moviddy. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In centre of graveyard (CO083-075001-), ruin of former C of I parish church of Moviddy. Rectangular nave (13.85m E-W; 7.7m N-S), to which was added semicircular apse (7.7m N-S; 4.3m E-W) at E end, and rectangular porch (4.3m E-W; 4.95m N-S) at W end. Porch entered through door in N wall, recently blocked up; surround has rounded arch with prominent keystone, jambs and arch stones deeply chamfered, base and capital on each side appear re-used and may be 18th-century in date. Addition of chancel and nave, and complete re-modelling of existing structure, took place in late 1890s (Cole 1903, 91-2); amongst these renovations was insertion of paired lights with limestone surrounds, three in N wall and three in S; these replaced 'old plain wooden frames' (ibid.). Earlier core probably built in early 18th century, and had already been repaired in early 19th century (Lewis 1837, vol. 2, 398) when described as 'very neat edifice in the early English style'. Built on or near site of ancient parish church (CO083-075003-) of Moviddy. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 - CO083-161: Bullaun stone (present location), https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO083-161----. In the village of Crookstown, In pasture, on private land. A possible bullaun stone was found lying along a field boundary, and reported to NMS in April 2021. It is a rather large block of limestone, sub-rectangular in shape originally (L 0.56m; Wth 0.48m; H c. 0.30m) with rounded corners. A significant portion of the stone is broken off (c. 050m by 0.40m). The longer surviving side of the stone is flat, while the other sides are rounded and slant inwardly, suggesting that the stone may have been set against a wall or flat surface. The hollow is circular (Diam. 0.28m; D 0.15m), but it is not centred within the stone. This is not the original location of the bullaun stone, and it may be associated with the early graveyard and church located c. 50m to the NE of the field where it is currently located (CO083-075001- and CO083-075002-).
