On narrow low-lying spit projecting from NW corner of Great Island, known as Monning Tower. Circular tower (diam. 15.5m), with flattened profile to E and W, built of coursed limestone ashlar. Entered on S side by 1st floor door with rounded arch; spiral stone staircase on E side of doorway gives access to ground floor and roof; steps now broken above 1st floor level and access to roof not gained. Inner face of tower and dome over 1st floor of brick. Ground floor divided into four radially arranged chambers around central circular area. Chamber to N had brick vault, now fallen, and served as magazine. Wooden floor over now gone; 1st floor windows in E and W walls; widely splayed with round headed arches; both flanked by a fireplace. Known as 'Monning Tower; successfully attacked by a band of Fenians in 1867 (Coleman 1907b, 199-200). One of three Martello Towers guarding N side of Great Island (CO075-029---; CO075-041---). On N shore of Great Island, directly S of Belvelly bridge which joins the island to the mainland. Circular tower (diam. 14.2m) with external flattened profile to E and W; faced on outside with coursed limestone ashlar. First floor entrance to SW with rounded arch (floor now gone); spiral staircase on S side of doorway gives access to ground floor and to roof level (not accessible as steps broken above 1st floor level). Windows with rounded arch at 1st floor level to E and W, on flattened sides, flanked by fire-places; quarried opening to N probably recent. Interior lined with brick; brick dome over 1st floor. Four radially arranged rooms at ground floor level, around central circular area; room to N has barrel vault of brick and served as magazine. One of three Martello Towers (CO075-026---; CO075-041---) guarding N side of Great Island (Kerrigan 1978, 148; Enoch 1975, 17-8). On N shore of Great Island, overlooking ford which was only land access to island before nearby bridge built in 1807. Four-storey, rectangular tower (13.5m E-W; 10m N-S), standing to full height. Ground floor doorway near S end of W wall; outer door surround entirely replaced; large murder-hole covering doorway. Ground floor chamber covered by pointed wicker-centred vault (axis E-W); lit by two window in both N and S wall, all now blocked up. In NE corner badly ruined entrance to straight stairs rising in N wall to door in E ingoing of 1st floor window embrasure. In external W wall at mezzanine level, central door with pointed arch; gives access to murder-hole chamber and to base of spiral staircase in SW corner of tower. This staircase gives access to main 1st, 2nd and 3rd floorc hambers and to three further mural chambers in W wall. Main 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor chambers have central window embrasure in N, E and S walls: single lights at 1st and 2nd floor levels, twin lights (all missing mullion) at 3rd floor level; lights ogee-headed and some have sunken spandrel decorations on outside face. In S wall, at 1st floor level, mural chamber entered from E ingoing of central window embrasure; lit by slit windows in S and E wall. In W wall, at 2nd floor level, remains of garderobe opening at N end of mural chamber. Second floor covered by pointed wicker-centred vault (axis E-W). At 3rd floor level, central window embrasure in W wall; door in N ingoing of this embrasure gives access to small mural chamber. Slop-stone opes at W end of S wall at 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor levels. Door, in W in going of window embrasure in S wall of main 3rd floor chamber, gives access to straight mural stairs rising to SW corner. This gives access to further mural chamber in W wall (only lower part of walls survive; base of narrow window ope in N wall) and wall walk atop S wall. Battlements do not survive. Built by Hodnett family, probably in 15th century; described as 'broken down' in 1581 but apparently occupied by Sir Peter Courthorpe 1636-51(Coleman 1915, 105-112; Healy 1088, 109-10). Worn plaque bearing coat of arms over ground floor door may belong to Courthorpe (Healy, ibid.). A number of the window lights have been replaced by horizontal concrete slits built by Irish Army during 'the emergency'. Late 19th century complex; indicated on 1902 OS 6-inch map as network of buildings and pond, little of which remains. Range of 1-storey, 3-bay houses (long axis N-S) with 2-storey, 3-bay gabled house at S end; all brick built. Brick walls of other structures adjacent to S end. Further S is an overgrown E elevation of structure (H 2.5m) with three brick arched opes (H 0.6m; Wth 0.45m; D1m) at base. Pond to E also remains. Segmental-headed door opening to first storey with replacement metal door and approached by flight of curved metal steps.

Detached L-plan three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1890, with gabled west bay and single-bay single-storey entrance porch to front (north) elevation, gablets to front and west elevations, two-bay two-storey extension to east and lean-to extension to rear (south). Pitched slate roofs with overhanging timber panelled eaves, rendered chimneystacks, decorative terracotta ridge tiles, carved timber bargeboards and finials. Hipped gabled slate roofs to porch, with moulded terracotta finials and carved timber bargeboards to gablets. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls with red brick detailing to gablets and eaves. Red brick walls to rear and to lean-to extension. Square-headed and pointed segmental-headed window openings with cut limestone sills and timber casement windows, those to gablets having red brick voussoirs. Segmental-headed door opening to west elevation of porch with timber panelled door. Red brick square-profile gate piers and wrought-iron pedestrian gate to west. Outbuildings around yard to south comprising three-bay single-storey with attic accommodation stable block of red brick construction and four-bay single-storey stable block of painted rubble stone construction, pitched artificial slate roofs and camber-headed openings with timber fittings.
